Sending a Dark Prayer Upword Trivia Quiz

The title is not about beseeching a deity for some ill purpose, nor is the last word misspelled. This is a slight variation on the add/change a letter concept based on the board game Upwords. Detailed instructions can be found in question 1.

Question 1 of 10
1. Upwords is a game similar to Scrabble where you arrange single letters on a grid to form words. Once a word is formed it may be lengthened by the addition of a letter or letters. New letters may also be stacked on top of those in place to alter the word that way. For example, on a single turn the word "pail could be lengthened to "pails", changed to "nail" or both lengthened and altered such as "snail".

In the quiz, each question will have you perform such changes on the answer to the previous question. Please note per the rules of Upwords the original letter may only be replaced up to four times.

Clues will be given about the number of changes to be made from the previous answer. Either adding a letter or changing an existing letter would count as a single change and the clues won't necessarily specify which type each change is. This time I will let you off easy and say that you will be operating on a single word throughout the quiz and it ends up as a six letter word.

Your starting word (answer to question zero if you prefer) is "dark"

Answer: park

The world's first parks were in England. Deer parks were set aside for the aristocracy to hunt on.
2. The product of striking flint and steel together; according to Bruce Springsteen, "you can't start a fire without a ____."

Answer: spark

The quote refers to lyrics from Springsteen's hit "Dancing In the Dark", the 1984 video for which included a brief appearance by a then unknown Courtney Cox as the girl pulled on stage by Springsteen.
3. A hybrid of a spoon and a fork

Answer: spork

The spork seems to have been first invented in the mid to late 1800s. Many variations exist and one patent filed in 1874 is even for a fork-knife-spoon triple combo. As clunky as the word spork may seem to you, just be glad the suggested alternate names of "forkspoon" or "foon" never caught on as, in my opinion, they sound worse.
4. An extra part held in reserve, or to refrain from killing or harming

Answer: spare

Though it may seem with some stretching that a similar origin could have led to both meanings given in the question, the noun denoting extras in reserve comes from Old English, whereas the verb to spare (as in "spare the rod and spoil the child") comes from German.
5. A fixed gaze

Answer: stare

Though it cannot be scientifically proven, it is widely believed that it is rude to stare.
6. Van Gogh painting: "The _____ Night"

Answer: starry

Arguably Van Gogh's most famous work, it was painted in 1889 during his year-long stay in the insane asylum to which he had admitted himself shortly after the well-known incident with his ear.
7. Pollen producing reproductive organ on a flower

Answer: stamen

The thin stalk of a stamen is called the filament and the pollen containing cap is called the anther. In addition to "stamens", the word "stamina" is an acceptable plural form of stamen. That confused me once when reading a botany text.
8. Comparative term for something that is even less fresh than its neighbor

Answer: staler

Many believe going stale in starchy foods involves them simply drying out, but it is more complex than that. Often there are discreet chemical changes going on in the starches, which is part of why you can't quite just add water to bring them back.
9. A thrash metal band, or "Buffy the Vampire _____"

Answer: slayer

Slayer formed in 1981 and is generally viewed as the hardest of the "Big Four" metal bands (the others being Anthrax, Metallica, and Megadeth). The role of Buffy Summers was played first by Kristy Swanson in the movie and then by Sarah Michelle Gellar in the TV series.
10. Supplication to a deity (consider the quiz title if stuck)

Answer: prayer

The term "prayer" can also be used in a secularized way to mean a fervent wish.
