Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 15 P on a R T

Answer: players on a rugby team

P on a R T = players on a rugby team

There are two teams in a rugby match and, in the case of rugby union, they each have fifteen players, for a total of 30 players during a game. The fifteen positions are eight forwards and seven backs. Forwards are the players who try to obtain the ball while backs pass and kick the ball. In the United States, the professional rugby organization is called Major League Rugby.
2. 7 W of the A W

Answer: wonders of the ancient world

W of the A W = wonders of the ancient world

The seven wonders of the ancient world are structures that historians considered wondrous and were viewed with awe by people. The seven wonders are the Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus, Temple of Artemis, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (the wonder that is shown in the picture), Lighthouse of Alexandria, and Colossus of Rhodes. There are also wonders of the natural world and wonders of the modern world.
3. 4 S in a D of C

Answer: suits in a deck of cards

S in a D of C = suits in a deck of cards

The four suits are hearts, clubs, diamonds, and spades. In games where one suit beats another suit, then the order of the suits is the same as what was just mentioned (hearts being the highest and spades being the lowest), although in most games, the different suits do no matter. Some people have suggested the four suits represent the four classes of medieval society, although is not known for sure if this is the case.
4. 8 P in the S S

Answer: planets in the solar system

P in the S S = planets in the solar system

According to NASA, a planet is a celestial body that must meet three criteria. It must orbit the sun, clear its neighborhood (meaning there can't be any other celestial bodies of the same size other than that which orbits the planet), and have enough gravity to force it into a spherical shape. The eight planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The reason Pluto is not considered a planet is because it does not clear its neighborhood.
A mnemonic device to remember planets is "My very educated mother just served us noodles".
5. 4 Q in a G

Answer: Quarts in a gallon

Q in a G = quarts in a gallon

Quarts are used to measure liquids and sometimes even solids. A dry quartz is the term used for measuring solids. Sand is an example of something solid that is measured using a dry quartz.
Furthermore, pints and cups are also types of measurements that are subdivisions of gallons and quarts. One gallon = four quarts = eight pints = sixteen cups.
6. 50 S in the U

Answer: states in the union

S in the U = states in the Union

In 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state in the United States, also called the Union. The country started with 13 colonies but more territories were added until it became fifty states. To become a state, among other things, a region or territory must have a republican form of government and must follow the organic laws (Northwest Ordinance, United States Constitution, and Declaration of Independence).
Note that the correct answer is Union and not United States or United States of America, because the question reads "S in the U" not "S in the US" or "S in the USA".
7. 18 H on a G C

Answer: holes on a golf course

H on a G C = holes on a golf course

Regardless of where you play, 18 holes is the normal number of holes in a game of golf, whether it is professional golf or mini golf. In each hole, there can be a number of obstacles, including sand bunkers or water hazards, which can make it more difficult for a golfer to hit the ball. Each hole has a par, which is the number of strokes it is expected a player will take to complete it. Each golf course can have a different par, but the usual par for the total game is 72.
8. 13 S on the A F

Answer: stripes on the American flag

S on the A F = stripes on the American flag

In 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a law stating the American flag would have 13 stripes, alternating between red and white. Interestingly, it does not say whether the stripes should start with red or white, even though variations of the flag have started with red. In 1818, a new rule was enacted stating that any changes to the American flag should be done on July 4th, American Independence Day.
9. 8 S on an O

Answer: sides on an octagon

S on an O = sides on an octagon

The first part of the word octagon is "oct" meaning eight. The Greek word is okto. Likewise, "gon" comes from the Greek word "gonia" meaning angle, so octagon actually means eight angles. That being said, it also has eight sides. Perhaps the most well known octagon in real life is the stop sign.
10. 14 D in a F

Answer: days in a fortnight

D in a F = days in a fortnight

A fortnight is two weeks, which is also fourteen days. It comes from the Middle English word "fourtenight" meaning fourteen nights, so fortnight could be more accurately described as fourteen nights. The word was more common in earlier times, but now many people opt for the phrase "two weeks" instead.
