Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Under what zodiac sign was Tom Hanks born?

Answer: Cancer

Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born on July 9, 1956 in Concord, California to Janet and Amos Hanks. Unfortunately, his parents divorced a few years after he was born, and he spent most of his childhood moving frequently from house to house. Cancer is the sixth sign of the zodiac, covering birth dates from June 21 - July 22.
2. For which film was Hanks NOT nominated for an Oscar?

Answer: Saving Mr. Banks

Hanks' first Best Actor nomination was for his role as John Baskin in "Big". He earned another nod for his portrayal of Chuck Noland in "Cast Away". His turn as Fred "Mister" Rogers in "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" also merited consideration for a statuette.

While "Saving Mr. Banks" was a commercial and critical success, it didn't receive much recognition from the Academy; its only nomination was for Best Original Score.
3. For which films did Tom Hanks win back-to-back Oscars?

Answer: "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump"

Hanks was only the second man in Oscar history to earn back-to-back awards for "Best Actor." The first was iconic screen legend Spencer Tracy, who nabbed the gold for his roles in "Captains Courageous" (1937) and "Boys Town" (1938).
4. In which film was Hanks' character NOT based on an actual person?

Answer: Saving Private Ryan

In "Saving Mr. Banks", Hanks portrayed film legend Walt Disney. He took on the role of World War II-era journalist Ben Bradlee in "The Post". In "Sully", he played Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the pilot who successfully landed US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River after the jetliner's engines failed; remarkably, none of the passengers or crew were seriously injured.

While the events featured in "Saving Private Ryan" were inspired by the story of the Niland brothers who fought in World War II, Hanks' character, Captain John Miller, was completely fictional.
5. Hanks has a rather unique hobby. What antique item does he like to collect?

Answer: typewriters

In the 2017 film "California Typewriter", Hanks estimated that he had over 250 typewriters. In recent years, his collection has dwindled to around 120 as he's given them away to friends and fans. He's such a fanatic about these machines that he even created a word processing app in 2014 called HanxWriter that simulates the experience of writing on a typewriter.

It's currently available on the Apple App Store.
6. Which iconic film line was NOT uttered by one of Tom Hanks' characters?

Answer: "When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."

This line was actually spoken by Billy Crystal as Harry Burns in "When Harry Met Sally..." to frequent Hanks costar Meg Ryan as Sally Albright. The "box of chocolates", "no crying in baseball", and "Houston, we have a problem" quotes come from Hanks' characters in "Forrest Gump", "A League of Their Own" and "Apollo 13", respectively.
7. Hanks has been married to his longtime love, Rita Wilson, since 1988. How many children do they have together?

Answer: 2

The Hanks brood includes; son Colin and daughter Elizabeth were born to his first marriage with actress Samantha Lewes, and he had sons Chester "Chet" and Truman with his second wife, Rita Wilson. All four have dabbled in entertainment in various ways, via acting, producing, directing, and cinematography.

The family has since grown to include grandchildren. Of his family, Hanks is quoted as saying, "A man is blessed with a family... like that. A wife who is fantastic in every way. Who has taught me what love is... Kids who are braver and wiser than their old man is. I can't tell you how much your love means to me."
8. In addition to his acting talent, Hanks has an impressive resume as a producer. He usually acts in the films he produces, but in one of these movies, he had no screen time, choosing to stay entirely behind the scenes. Which was it?

Answer: My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Hanks' wife and collaborator on their production company, Playtone, saw a stage version of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and urged her husband to take it to the big screen. Star/writer Nia Vardalos admitted that when Hanks called her to discuss it, she initially hung up because she didn't believe it was actually him. Tom portrayed the titular characters in "Charlie Wilson's War" and "Larry Crowne" (both of which costarred Julia Roberts), and Mr. White in "That Thing You Do!"
9. Celebrated actress and fellow Academy Award winner Sally Field once played Hanks' mother. In which film did she portray his lover?

Answer: Punchline

Field turned in an impressive performance as Mama Gump in "Forrest Gump", but this was not the first time she'd worked with Tom. Their first costarring gig was in the 1988 film "Punchline", which chronicles the obstacles encountered by aspiring stand-up comedians.

In a moment of vulnerability, Hanks' Steven Gold and Field's Lilah Krytsick have a brief liaison, but ultimately Lilah reunites with her husband John (played by John Goodman).
10. Tom Hanks may be most well known for his extensive film roles, but he first made a name for himself in which sitcom?

Answer: Bosom Buddies

Hanks starred along with Peter Scolari in "Bosom Buddies", a gender-bending comedy in which two friends masquerade as females in order to rent an apartment in a building designated solely for women.
