Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Sellers born?

Answer: Southsea , England

Born Richard Henry Sellers in 1925, he died in 1980 shortly after completing 'The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu'.
2. Where did he work before hitting the movies?

Answer: radio

He first made his name on the BBC radio comedy series, 'The Goon Show'(it influenced 'Monty Python', for one thing). One of his co-stars was Spike Milligan.
3. In what film did he co-star with Sir Alec Guinness?

Answer: The Ladykillers

Though he became better known as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Guinness was renowned for his comic characters early in his career. Sellers only co-starred with Guinness in Alexander Mackendrick's 1955 farce (which also paired him, for the first time, with his 'Pink Panther' partner Herbert Lom!)
4. What film of his was based on a James Thurber story?

Answer: The Battle Of The Sexes

'Battle' was based on Thurber's 'The Catbird Seat', filmed in Scotland. Danny Kaye starred in 'Mitty', Henry Fonda was in 'Animal', from a stage comedy Thurber co-wrote, and Jack Lemmon was in 'War', which inspired the TV series 'My World, and Welcome To It'.
5. What film of his was based on Robert Louis Stevenson?

Answer: The Wrong Box

Actually, Stevenson co-wrote 'Box' with his stepson Lloyd Osbourne. Byran Forbes directed, and Sellers co-starred with Michael Caine, Dudley Moore and Nanette Newman (Mrs. Forbes)
6. What films did he do with Stanley Kubrick?

Answer: Lolita, Dr. Strangelove

His work as Claire Quilty in 'Lolita' so impressed Kubrick that he signed him on immediately for 'Strangelove', where he was nothing short of brilliant in his three roles: Group Captain Mandrake, President Muffley and the title character in a wheelchair (can anyone forget that ending?)
7. Which one of these films also had him play three roles?

Answer: The Mouse That Roared

One of the three roles in 'Mouse' had him in drag as the Grand Duchess of Grand Fenwick!
8. What film co-starred him with Woody Allen (who also wrote the script) and Peter O'Toole?

Answer: What's New, Pussycat?

The film is best known for the Bacharach-David title song.
9. What later film reunited him with Allen and O'Toole?

Answer: Casino Royale

'Royale' was a James Bond spoof based on Ian Fleming's first Bond novel. Allen was Bond's neurotic nephew, Sellers a subsitiute Bond hired by Ursula Andress (the first Bond girl) and later meeting O'Toole (a cameo) in a psychadelic sequence.
10. How many times did Sellers play Clouseau?

Answer: five

In 'The Pink Panther', 'A Shot In The Dark', 'Return Of The Pink Panther', 'The Pink Panther Strikes Again', and posthumously in 'Trail of The Pink Panther', which used unseen footage of Sellers after his death. 'Revenge of The Pink Panther' does not count, since it used footage from the previous five movies.
