Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Knowing that Samuel L. Jackson is an actor, what surprising impediment did he develop in his childhood that he had to learn to get over (similar to Marilyn Monroe, Hugh Grant, James Earl Jones, and Nicole Kidman)?

Answer: Stuttering

Samuel L. Jackson was born on December 21, 1948, in Washington D.C., USA. He was born on the same day as Willi Resetarits, the Austrian singer and activist. Due to his father's alcoholism, Samuel rarely met his dad, Roy Henry Jackson, and he passed away when Samuel was still very young. His mother, Elizabeth Harriett, was a factory worker who struggled to make ends meet. Samuel Jackson was raised by his grandparents and other family members.

Samuel L. Jackson suffers from stuttering and has done so since he was a young child. He had to learn to deal with it in school, and often pretended that he was a person who didn't stutter. In fact, there was also a year where he didn't utter a single word in public. To this day, he still has episodes of stuttering, however, he has found ways to overcome his impediment, like the use of profanity as a way to get through a speech block.
2. Samuel L. Jackson attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. There he found his passion after attending a class on public speaking. For which subject did he originally attend and want to get his degree in?

Answer: Marine biology

Samuel L. Jackson spend most of his formative years in Tennessee but chose to go to Atlanta, Georgia, to attend Morehouse College for his postsecondary studies. Morehouse College was then an all-black college where Martin Luther King Jr. also attended.

At the height of the Civil Rights movement, it was a very popular college for Black people. Samuel L. Jackson attended with the intention of getting a degree in marine biology, however, he discovered his passion for acting at a public speaking class and switched his major to architecture.

He eventually graduated with a BA in drama.
3. Samuel L. Jackson was actively involved in the Civil Rights movement and was even expelled from college for his actions.

Answer: True

As a Black youth growing up in the southern United States in the 1960s, it was impossible for Samuel L. Jackson not to be involved at least in some part in the Civil Rights movement that was happening at that time. While at Morehouse College, he, along with several other students, took some of the college faculty hostage until they acceded to demands for change in the college's policies. One of the hostages was Martin Luther King Sr.

When Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, Samuel L. Jackson attended the funeral and was even an usher. He participated in a protest march in his home state of Tennessee, and, though this is unconfirmed by Jackson himself, he was also apparently involved in the Black Panthers movement.
4. Samuel L. Jackson appeared in a few independent productions before he began to take more mainstream roles. What, however, prevented him from becoming a Broadway actor, something John Belushi, Whitney Houston, Robert Downey Jr., and Drew Barrymore all struggled with too?

Answer: Cocaine addiction

Samuel L. Jackson loved acting in college so much, he began to feature in some independent movies that were being filmed. He moved from Atlanta to New York City in order to further his career, and this led him to stage acting. At the same time, he began to develop an addiction to alcohol and drugs, specifically heroin and cocaine.

This prevented him from moving with a couple of plays he was in to Broadway, as the producers found other actors to take his place.
5. They worked together in "Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard", but they had already met in New York City years before. When Samuel L. Jackson was trying to kick his career into gear, which actor (also of "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Invictus" fame) took him under his wing as a mentor?

Answer: Morgan Freeman

While in Atlanta, Samuel L. Jackson participated in several independent productions. However, seeing how the acting industry was centered around Los Angeles and New York City, Jackson moved to the latter and joined the Negro Ensemble Company and the New York Shakespeare Company to participate in stage productions. It was around this time that Morgan Freeman took notice of the younger actor and took him under his wing.

"Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" was a sequel to "The Hitman's Bodyguard" and it united Samuel L. Jackson and his former mentor in their first film together. Though the film got generally negative reviews, it showed the strength of having Freeman and Jackson together.

The character is a Jedi Master who is one of the prominent people on the Jedi High Council and a skilled swordfighter. As the prequel progresses, Mace Windu gets increasingly suspicious of Anakin Skywalker and of the Emperor. When the Jedi confront the Emperor and attack him, it is Mace Windu who has the upper hand in the duel until Anakin shows up. Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader is complete when he attacks and kills Mace Windu.
9. Did Samuel L. Jackson speak out in favour of wearing masks during the Coronavirus epidemic in the United States?
