Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The sketch opens with Tony Hancock attending a blood donor centre and saying to the nurse that he wanted to do something for the benefit of the country as a whole. What should it be he says, become a blood donor or _________ . What was the something else that he said he had considered?

Answer: "join the young conservatives"

He continues " as I am not looking for a wife and I can't play table tennis, here I am". Hancock is playing his usual role as the character who is always very serious, while creating humour for his audience. He believes that giving blood is a far more venturesome activity than it really is in reality.
2. The nurse produces to Tony Hancock a list and says "Have you had any of the diseases on this list". Hancock now says "show me"and how does Tony Hancock now reply to the question?

Answer: "how dare you!"

He says " How dare you! No I have not and especially that one". Hancock is playing the part of someone who takes personally that which others know is a routine question and amusing his audience immensely.
3. Hancock is also asked by the nurse "have you given any blood before?". How does Hancock respond?

Answer: "given no, spilt yes" he says

He then goes into some war stories. Hancock is trying to impress the nurse, but his story of war time heroics convinces no one.
4. Hancock eventually goes into the doctor and the doctor takes a blood sample from Hancock's finger. What is Hancock's response to this?

Answer: "Well that's that, I'll have me cup of tea and a biscuit now"

Hancock has to be persuaded to stay. His character clearly misunderstands the way of giving blood and the amount needed.
5. Hancock is told that the doctor needs to take a pint of blood from him and that he is a very rare blood group. What is Hancock's response to this?

Answer: "that's very nearly an armful"

The change of setting to the doctor's surgery and a new actor (the doctor) keeps the comedy moving and interesting.
6. Having fainted while giving the blood Hancock comes round in the waiting room. On seeing the nurse she says "you fainted, that's all" and what is Hancock's response to this?

Answer: "I did not, I was asleep"

Hancock is still trying to impress the nurse. The comedy is moving on again from the surgery back to the waiting room.
7. After Hancock has given some amusing reasons why people have blood, Hancock is asked by another donor "Are you a doctor then?". How does Hancock respond?

Answer: "no I'm not really, I never really bothered"

Hancock portrays a character that needs to impress people. A character that is insecure in what he has achieved in life and so he exaggerates himself. Hancock was famed for his ability to act alone thoughout a solo comedy show. In the sketch the presence of other actors is bringing out Hancock's skill as a comedian.

The sketch is remembered by many people as the best he ever did in his career.
8. Hancock says to this other donor that medical science has advanced a lot. Hancock then says that"I was glad to see the back of those ----------". What was Hancock glad to see the back of?

Answer: "leeches"

Hancock is again trying to impress while showing his ignorance of medical history.
9. Hancock having gone home, cuts himself with a bread knife and ends up back in hospital. Hancock is laying in a hospital bed when the doctor he saw to give the blood comes in the ward. The doctor wants to know who wants the bottle of rare blood? When he sees it's for Hancock what does the doctor say?

Answer: "Oh no it's not for him! Well, he only gave it yesterday!"

The doctor probably produces one of the funniest moments in the sketch, which is enhanced by picturing Hancock's reaction while lying in bed. Hancock is clearly enraged and the audience await his comeback remarks with glee.
10. Hancock defends the use of his own rare blood by giving it back to him. He says that blood banks are like ordinary banks really. Why does Hancock say this?

Answer: "Put it in when your flushed and draw it out when you need it"

Hancock ends the sketch in his usual state of being content with life, while being blissfully unaware of the comedy going on around him. This was a rare type of record to celebrate a great comedian and a unique era in comedy. The reverse side of the record has Hancock's programme "The Radio Ham" on it. Both were written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.
