Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dan, the patriarch of the Archer clan, had two farm animals called 'Blossom' and 'Boxer' of which he was extremely fond. What sort of animals were they?

Answer: Shire horses

In 1951, Dan Archer retired his last two working Shire horses, Blossom and Boxer, putting Blossom out to grass and selling Boxer. Strangely enough, in 2007 Nigel Pargetter introduced a Shire horse to Lower Loxley. Nice to see them making a comeback! The Shire is the tallest of Britain's native breeds and can be 18 hands high.
2. What defect was the baby Elizabeth Archer born with?

Answer: Hole in the heart

Elizabeth was a hole in the heart baby when she was born in 1967. The terminal selfishness, which appeared in the rows over her parents will, and the foot in mouth, when she dropped her friend and employee Kathy in it with the police, presumably developed later. Christopher Carter was the unfortunate Ambridge child with a hare lip.
3. Jennifer Aldridge, nee Archer, the oldest daughter of Peggy and Jack Archer, is married to Brian and she has four children - Adam, Debbie, Kate and Alice. Who is Adam's father?

Answer: Paddy Redmond

Yes, the very sophisticated Jennifer caused a real stir in 1967 when she had an illegitimate son by Paddy Redmond, Brookfield's cowman. She later married Roger Travers-Macy and had a daughter, Debbie. The marriage didn't last, and she married Brian Aldridge and had two more daughters, Kate and Alice (though Jennifer did have flings with John Tregorran and Roger-Travers-Macy, the hussy). Brian was in real trouble with Jennifer when he had an affair with Siobhan Hathaway, Tim's wife.

She should have realised what's sauce for the goose...though to be fair to Jennifer, Brian had past form in that area too.
4. Which character is the odd one out?

Answer: Sid Perks

Sean Myerson was the gay landlord of the Cat and Fiddle (his partner's name was Peter). Adam, Jennifer's charming son, soon charmed Grey Gables' charismatic chef, Ian Craig, and after a tender kiss in a polytunnel, they set up home together and celebrated with a civil partnership in 2006 (after Ian had got over his longing to be a father with his old friend Madeleine (who turned out to be aptly nicknamed Madds)). Sid, on the other hand, is positively homophobic and had a real hissy fit when Sean became captain of the cricket team.
5. With which of these people has Caroline Sterling (nee Bone) not had a relationship?

Answer: Jack Woolley

The aristocratic (niece of Lord Netherbourne) Miss Bone has had a long and varied series of amours, including the local vicar, Robin Stokes, the rich Guy Pemberton, who died, and the married Brian Aldridge. Jack Woolley was her employer and former owner of Grey Gables.
6. Which famous 'Archers' jailbird became such a cause celebre that Michael Howard, the then Home Secretary, felt compelled to comment on their incarceration?

Answer: Susan Carter

Susan Carter was jailed for sheltering her criminal brother, Clive Horrobin, who took his revenge on the locals after his release by burning down George and Christine Barford's house and was reincarcerated. No Home Secretaries speaking up for Clive, though! Tom Archer was charged with criminal damage after trying to damage genetically-modified rape crops, but was found not guilty. Jeffrey Archer is the erstwhile Conservative politician and millionaire author jailed for perjury and perverting the course of justice.
7. In 2004, Kathy Perks was raped by the Grey Gables chef, Owen King. She didm't tell anyone, and, in 2007, the same man (whose name turned out to be Gareth Taylor), attacked another woman. Although the scriptwriters appear to have forgotten, this mirrors a 1995 storyline where an 'Archers' character had a relationship with a man who hit her, so she broke up with him, but didn't tell anyone. The man went on to hit her friend. Which character was the first to suffer the brute's fist?

Answer: Shula Hebden

For a Churchwarden, Shula Archer-Hebden-Lloyd has had a racy love life! After going out with Nigel Pargetter (who married her sister Elizabeth), she married the solicitor Mark Hebden, but lost him after an unfortunate incident with a tree. She then took up with Simon Pemberton (the son of her best friend's husband), but he cheated on her and hit her.

Although she broke up with him, she didn't tell anyone and subsequently felt very guilty when Pemberton hit her friend Debbie Aldridge. Kathy felt similarly guilty over Taylor's exploits.
8. No quiz on 'The Archers' would be complete without a question on the perennial Bad Boys of Ambridge, the Grundys. Which member of the family is a mustelicide?

Answer: Joe

When the family were evicted from Grange Farm, they were sent to a high-rise flat in Meadow Rise. Eddie was keeping his ferrets there (not surprisingly against the terms of the lease), so Joe killed them with a lump hammer to save the family more trouble. Ferrets are from the Mustelidae family, like skunks, badgers, otters, and minks. Joe is not the only mustelicide in the village. David Archer, besieged by TB, once shot a badger.
9. Usha Gupta, an Asian solicitor, originally expelled from Uganda, has not had an easy ride in Ambridge either. What has not happened to her since she moved to Ambridge from Wolverhampton?

Answer: Having an affair with Brian Aldridge.

The now-reformed Roy Tucker got into bad company as a lad and took part in nasty racial attacks, but she has since forgiven him. Her then boyfriend, Doctor Richard Locke, fell for the charms of Shula, nearly ending Shula's own relationship with her then fiance, Alistair Lloyd (told you she had a racy history for a Churchwarden!). I wouldn't say Usha has forgiven Shula. Usha is, as of 2008, with the vicar, Alan Franks.

As she is a Hindu, this is not looked on with favour by everyone. Usha is one of the few women of the village who has not yet had an affair with Brian.
10. 'The Archers' theme tune sends people rushing to their radios, either to turn them up or off. What is the name of the distinctive tune?

Answer: Barwick Green

It is from the suite My Native Heath, written in 1924 by Arthur Wood, and is a maypole dance. Billy Connolly, amongst many others, has suggested it should replace 'God Save the Queen' as our national anthem. Never argue with a true fan about whether it goes 'Dum-di-dum' or 'Rum-ti-tum' - there are some very strong feelings out there! Whether you are a fan or not, I hope you enjoyed the quiz.
