Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chester Gould creates a new type of criminal in late 1934 in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. As we catch up on the penniless Mary Steele, we find she has taken a cleaning job in a large house in the country. Boris Arson and his gang are planning a huge crime, which she overhears. Eventually she steals some of the plans. What is the crime Arson is planning?

Answer: To simultaneously blow up and rob six vaults in different cities

Boris Arson is the first larger than life criminal in "Dick Tracy". Chester Gould has his gang refer to each other as A-1, B-2, etc. Mary Steele stole the plans and got a small airplane to fly her to Washington D.C., going straight to the top. The fictional Chief Morton of the 'secret service' is J. Edger Hoover.
Ian Fleming's Ernst Stavro Blofeld would have the members of SPECTRE call themselves by number nearly thirty years later in his James Bond novel "Thunderball". There are several other similarities in the Bond novels to Tracy through the years.
2. Boris Arson realizes he has to leave the house because Mary Steele has stolen some of his plans. But first he sets a trap so no clues will be found in the house. There have already been many firsts in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, including x-rays, bullet proof vests and lie detectors. Here we find Arson using a device unknown to most readers in 1934 so that the first person entering the house will set off explosives. What is the device he uses?

Answer: An 'electric eye'

The first police officer on the scene sees the lights in the door casing and investigates them, but has no idea what they are. Just as Tracy and crew arrive on the scene, his curiosity gets the better of him and the house blows up and burns, killing the officer.
3. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Tracy and Pat spy on the underground nitroglycerine factory where the nitro is being stolen for Boris Arson's robbery. But the spies are being spied upon, and Pat Patton and Dick Tracy are held up and forced to help load the nitro onto an airplane. Tracy is chained to a basement wall in their hideout, while Pat scuffles with B-2 and manages to get on board the plane before it takes off. How does he get the pilot to land safely?

Answer: Offers to recommend leniancy for him if he lands safely

Just before they landed, Pat also had to threaten to shoot the pilot and take the controls himself, but he landed safely. Back in their headquarters, B-2 unlocks Tracy from the shackles. With one arm free, Tracy swung the chain and knocked B-2 out, grabbing his gun and arresting the gang. Very simple for Dick Tracy.
4. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, during the last days of 1934, we find Boris Arson making a jailbreak and reuniting with the remainder of his old gang. He immediately orders them to kill Dick Tracy. B-6 is looking for Tracy when he spots someone else, who he instantly kidnaps. Who is it?

Answer: Mary Steele

Dick Tracy was disguised as an organ grinder, and saw B-6 take her into their hotel. Mary Steele is later forced to make a telephone call to Tracy, but he is already planning a raid.
5. In "Dick Tracy", Tracy breaks into the room with Boris Arson and his gang, and is pushed, gun firing, into a closet and locked in. A bottle filled with chloroform falls and breaks, creating another deathtrap for the detective. How does he survive the fumes until the police arrive?

Answer: Breathing through the bullet hole in the door

The police are stuck up by the Arson gang, who is holding Mary Steele as a shield. Arson brags about how Tracy is dead in the closet. When one of the gang opens the door, Tracy charges out with an automatic in each hand, surprising them and the tables are turned. Arson is taken into custody once again.
6. In "Dick Tracy", Junior Tracy becomes suspicious of Mary Steele, realizing he has saw her somewhere before. Where does he find a picture of her?

Answer: A locket given to him by Hank Steele

After he realizes who she is, he sees her on the street and calls her mother. It is more than she can bear, and she finally breaks down and admits that she is his mother. Only Dick Tracy knew who she was, but she swore him to secrecy during the previous story.
7. We now get into the jail cell with Boris Arson in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. His rather feminine looking lawyer visits him in his cell. What realtionship is he to Boris?

Answer: His sister

Zora Arson makes her first appearance, trying to figure out how to help him escape. She spends about as much time cross dressed as a man as she does as a woman throughout the story.
8. Zora Arson spends a month in "Dick Tracy" trying without success to kill Mary Steele. At one point she has to take a reed from the edge of a pond, steal a kids toy boat to which she attaches the reed, and with a rock for weight, walk under water across the pond breathing through the reed to escape Tracy. Now she devises an escape plan for Boris. Upon her instructions, he whittles a potato into the shape of a gun, then intentionally burns himself. What does he ask police for to help heal his wound?

Answer: Iodine

He pours the iodine on the potato, which turns it blue-black like gun metal, then bluffs his way out with a potato gun, of course taking a real gun in the process.
In the early days of "Dick Tracy", Chester Gould took many of his stories from the headlines of the newspapers. John Dillinger escaped jail with a wooden gun, and Gould used the potato gun in a similar manner.
9. Boris and Zora Arson manage to skip town by bribing an indian chief from Oklahoma to come get them from the city. Dick Tracy and Pat Patton, however, get on their trail eventually teaming with Chief Yellowpony in the chase. Zora knows an outlaw living in the hills, Cutie Diamond. He has a cave hideout near his house, complete with starving wildcats for guards. Tracy, however, knows how to flush them out. With what does he get them out of the cave?

Answer: Carbon monoxide

Dick Tracy knocks a hole in the cave and runs his car exhaust through the hole, thereby forcing the criminals to come out, guns blazing.
Cutie Diamond is a direct reference to Jack "Legs" Diamond. At one point earlier in the story, Zora Arson and Cutie posed with cigars and guns, much like Bonnie Parker did for Clyde Barrow.
10. The end of the Boris Arson story in "Dick Tracy" sees a shootout between Zora Arson, Cutie Diamond, Dick Tracy, Pat Patton and Chief Yellowpony. Boris Arson is hit and turns yellow, running back into the cave. Zora is killed, but Cutie Diamond makes it to his house, though hit several times. From what does he die?

Answer: His wounds

Here we see the first sympathetic death of a villain, as Cutie Diamond staggers up the stairs, overturns a chair and waits for Tracy, slowly dying of his wounds. "With automatic poised and aimed toward the door-his body stiffens....fingers that sent leaden death into his fellow men, grow white and rigid...".
Boris Arson is wounded and taken into custody, never to break out of jail again.
