Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before we left, we spent a lot of time looking at wedding chapels online. We selected one and booked the wedding ahead of time. Do you have to book your wedding ahead of time in Las Vegas?

Answer: No

While it is not necessary to book your wedding ahead of time, it is highly recommended. You never know what else is happening that day. For example, on July 7, 2007, people had to wait in line over 5 hours at "quickie chapels". Also, casinos require you to book your wedding in advance.
2. We selected a casino on the strip for our wedding. We got married in the "Chapel in the Clouds" 103 floors above "The Strip". In which hotel and casino did we wed?

Answer: The Stratosphere

The Stratosphere features a wedding chapel 785 feet up! This is not a chapel for the acrophobic! You can get married atop the "Eiffel Tower" at the Paris, but it is not as high.
3. Before we got married, we got a marriage license. How can someone obtain one to get married in Las Vegas?

Answer: Go to the courthouse in person (both of you) during business hours

In 2007, the Las Vegas authorities decided the courthouse in Las Vegas would no longer be open 24 hours a day. They found they didn't really need to be open between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. often enough to justify staying open during those hours.

You can download and fill out your marriage license forms online (which I highly recommend), but you have to present them in person--both of you. When we got there, we were in line in front of a couple in full tux and wedding gown--They didn't know they needed a license at all!
4. After obtaining a license, we were home free, or were we?! Next we had the rehearsal dinner. Is a rehearsal required for a wedding in Las Vegas?

Answer: No

As a matter of fact, we just had a dinner--no rehearsal. We just called it a "rehearsal dinner" because it was the night before the wedding. There are thousands of wonderful restaurants to choose from for dinners in Las Vegas. We had a nice dinner with family and friends at the home of friends in Henderson.
5. The day of the wedding came, and a crisis appeared! My sister had forgotten her bridesmaid dress! Fortunately for her, the bridesmaids weren't wearing matching dresses. We took her to a factory outlet center to buy a new one. Where could she go on Las Vegas Boulevard to find an outlet center?

Answer: At the south end near the airport

There is an outdoor outlet mall just past the "Strip" on the Stratosphere end and an indoor mall on the other end near the airport. If you plan to shop at one of these centers on a Saturday, plan for PLENTY of extra time. The malls are crowded, and parking takes a lot of time.
6. Next I went to the Roni Josef Salon to have my hair and nails done. I asked for the traditional bridal hairstyle. What do Vegas salons call this style?

Answer: The bridal "up-do"

According to the salons, the traditional hairstyle is a French twist with curls on top--ringlets optional. For women with short hair, they will add a piece called a "wiglet".

I actually skipped a step from my own wedding day because it's not traditional: I had to get the stitches out that morning. Anyone interested in the full story should send me a note.
7. After getting "buffed and coiffed", I met my bridesmaids at my room to get ready. I made sure my sister (who was now dressed in her lovely new dress) had the wedding rings. Does Las Vegas require that a couple exchange wedding rings?

Answer: No

While wedding rings are a lovely symbol of your commitment to each other, they are not required. Reasons couples have listed for not including them in the ceremony include expense, an aversion to wearing jewelry, and a desire to tattoo "rings" on their fingers after the ceremony.
8. Then it was time to get to the chapel! I gave the minister the wedding license and met him for the first time. How do wedding chapels in Las Vegas handle ministers' fees?

Answer: All of these options are possible.

A typical fee for a minister is about $50. You may also "bring your own minister" to the chapel. For example, my father is a Notary Public, which makes him able to legally wed people in the state of South Carolina. Were he legally allowed to marry people in Nevada, I could have skipped the hotel's minister and used my father. Not all chapels will allow this, so ask ahead of time.
9. Finally, I walked down the aisle on my father's arm. As I walked down the aisle, I saw my family and Allen's family on their respective sides. Traditionally in a Las Vegas (American Christian) wedding, which side should my (the bride's) family sit on?

Answer: left

The original tradition of having the bride on the left came from practical considerations. At the end of the ceremony, when bride and groom turn around, that puts the bride on the groom's right. As a married couple, brides were supposed to be on the groom's right to avoid getting splashed by passing carriages as they walked down the street.
10. Immediately following the ceremony, Allen and I were whisked away by a photographer while our friends and family enjoyed reception food and beverage. What part of the reception refreshments is traditionally supposed to be saved and enjoyed by the couple on their first anniversary (American tradition)?

Answer: The top layer of the wedding cake

While champagne, wedding soup, and wedding cookies are traditional reception foods, the top layer of the cake is supposed to be frozen for the couple to enjoy on their first anniversary. I personally believe this is because the happy couple never gets to eat at their own reception. The top layer of wedding cakes used to be made of fruitcake because it "saves" better than traditional wedding cake. Then, of course, those couples would have to celebrate their anniversary by eating fruitcake. Ewww!
