Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When he was up for promotion, with his qualifications, who did Sub-Lieutenant Phillips say he could have been?

Answer: Lord Nelson

He took them through an epic adventure recounting on how he lost his arm when a Spanish waiter-gentleman dropped a hundred-weight of paella on his arm, in a sea food restaurant called the Santa Claws.
Later, when they're in Naples, Leading Seaman Goldstien asks if he can have shore-leave to go and visit his Welsh friend from the valleys. When asked "What Welsh friend? We're in Italy!" he replies "Oh come off it sir! You must have heard the expression, "See Naples and Dai!"
2. What was Commander Weatherby's funny little idiosyncrasy?

Answer: He had a stammer

Commander Weatherby, voiced by vocal genious Jon Pertwee, was head of security and it could often take him several minutes to finish a single sentence - "I'd like a return ticket-t-t-t-t-t-ticket-t-t-t-t-t to the Digital-Digital-Digital I-mbrI-mbrI-mbrI-tidley-I-tidley-I, the Digital-mbrDigital-mbr-Digital-mbrI-tidley-tidley-mbro-mbro-mbro to hell with the Digital Islands, I'll go to Jersey with him!" Hence Admiral Ffont-Bittocks' observation "No wonder he's head of security.

By the time he finished telling secrets to a foreign power they'd be out of date!"
3. Who voiced Captain McDoom, the fatalistic Scotsman?

Answer: Leslie Phillips

"If I dinnae stop wriggling aboot, the seat of ma troos'll glow brighter than a hundred-watt lightbulb, or at least so I've heard. I've ne'er actually seen one except in a shop. In our house, the minute Mr Sun goes to bed, so do we!"
4. And who was always complaining that everyone thought of him as I silly old fool with no right to be here at all?

Answer: Vice Admiral Prout

Conversations with him would usually start something along the lines of "Excuse me?" "What is it Vice-Admiral Prout?" "Oh lore! Once old Prouty gets going, it's settle back for a rave-up!" then Prout would have his rave - "And why shoud this place be any different, eh? After all I've been ignored by more important people than this crowd! Sea Lords have ignored me! Admirals of the Fleet have ignored me! So this lot are small-fry; even smaller than that probably, so let that be the end of it!" - and then the Admiral would normally finish off by saying something along the lines of "You know you could use his liver as an underfelt for a carpet!"
5. How many of the regular characters have the same names as the actors who play them?

Answer: 4

These were Silly-ass Sub-Lieutenant Leslie Phillips, Chief Petty Officer Jon Pertwee, Commander Stephen Murray, and Wren Heather Chasen.
6. Complete this quote from "Horrible Cuthbert" - "Stone me! You know what that 'orrible Cuthbert is? He's a___!"

Answer: lewd crude prude

"In fact, over the last 24 hours, he couldn't have been a lewder cruder prude!" "Agrood! Er-er I mean, agreed!"
7. Who won the QE2 prize for the Naval recruitment slogan competition?

Answer: CPO Pertwee

He thought he was really going on the Queen Elizabeth II luxury liner. He was, in fact going on "Lord Quirke's Expedition to Iceland for Two Weeks." When he found this out he tried to foist the prize onto Captain Povey, recounting his lyrical masterpiece, which he thought up with his wife - "Become a sailor like our Jack who sails the seven sees and back; he goes into a whirl at the sight of a girl, and his knickety-knacks go clickety-clack"!
8. Who created the Loch Ness Monster?

Answer: CPO Pertwee and Sub-Lieutenant Phillips

When they were on shore leave in at Loch Ness, they went to a local pub, where they got completely drunk. When it was closing time they didn't want to go, and so they were kicked out. To get back at the landlord they rolled all his barrels of ale into the loch, creating the night-time illusion of Nessie's 4 humps.
9. What did Taffy Goldstein mistake for limpet mines attatched to the hull?

Answer: baking trays

CPO Pertwee was having Fatso Johnson make him a steak and kidney pudding for his date that night. However they don't turn out very well, so they throw them out of the porthole. Because of the weight of the pudding, they stuck solidly to the underside of the ship! One of them, however turned out to actually be a limpet mine. Woosh, bang, ooh nasty!
10. When he and CPO Pertwee were invited to the Hunt Ball, where did Mr Phillip's navigation land them?

Answer: Southampton

The Hunt Ball actually took place in Northampton. It was a really foggy night, and as well as being completely incompetent in map reading, he could only read half the road sign!
11. When Captain Povey recommended him for redundancy, how old was Commander Murray?

Answer: twididdlyumpty-six

Mr Phillips was twididdlyumpty-four, and the Padre was twididdlyumpty-five. "Well, it doesn't matter how many twididdlyumpties you all are, I'm obviously one twididdlyumpty too many!"
12. When Ramona Povey was trying to impress her sister, what rank did she promote Captain Povey to?

Answer: Admiral of the Fleet

Which would, by all accounts, make Troutbridge the flagship... Scary, eh!
13. How many attempts did the crew make to ram the destroyer "Make Peace"?

Answer: 42

This was when they were trying to get Henry out of the house when his Mother-in-Law was staying to look after him. They also tried to run aground on a couple of sandbanks 42 times.
14. What was the registration of the hapless crew's ship?

Answer: F09

This is mentioned in the episode where Commander Murray, Sub-Lieutenant Phillips, and CPO Pertwee are cast adrift in a rubber dinghy when a weapons test goes wrong and blows the ship up. When they come accross a giant structure with the symbol, Chief thinks it says "Fog", so of course, Mr Phillips thinks it is a clever ploy by te Russians to send a barge full of fog. Only when they get in a little closer can they tell that it is actually the number of their ship.
15. And finally, what was the name of the frigate aboard which the hapless crew would share all their misadventures?

Answer: HMS Troutbridge

The Destroyer "Make Peace" was Admiral Ffont-Bittocks' flag ship, the "Boris Badinov" was a ship in the Forbodian Navy, and the "General Lincoln III" was a ship in the American Navy. If there was a dirty job, they would give it to the dirtiest ship in the flotilla. All hands on deck, weigh anchor, left hand down a bit, right hand up a bit, back a bit and...Whoah! We've hit it!
