Who could ever forget Michael Crawford playing the hapless Frank Spencer alongside British actress, Michele Dotrice? This excellent comedy series ran from 1973 to 1978 with Crawford doing his own stunts. These included reversing his car halfway over the cliffs at Beachy Head, driving off the end of a pier into the sea and somehow dragging himself behind a London bus on roller skates.

Not only was Crawford famous for his television work, but he has since become a national treasure on the stage, starring in many theatrical musicals. In 1981, he played the lead role of P.T. Barnum in the stage production of "Barnum". This was followed in 1986 where he played The Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's masterpiece, "The Phantom of the Opera". Crawford celebrated his 70th birthday on 19 January 2012 while performing on stage as Professor Marvel in "The Wizard of Oz".

Another fine British comedian, Ronnie Barker, was first offered the role of Frank Spencer before Michael Crawford. Barker successfully went on to star in TV favourites, "Porridge", "The Two Ronnies" and "Open All Hours". He sadly died of heart failure in 2005 at the age of 76. Such was his popularity that over 2,000 people attended his memorial service at Westminster Abbey in London.

Answer: Trouble in Store

Written by Norman Wisdom and June Tremayne, "Don't Laugh at Me (Cause I'm a Fool)" featured in the 1953 film "Trouble in Store". Norman played a hapless shop clerk with aspiring dreams of becoming a window dresser. His many escapades resulted in him being fired from his job several times, always returning to cause more havoc. When he was fired again, he discovered purely by chance that two other staff members were plotting to rob the store and he foiled their plans, ensuring that his job was safe once again. As with all of his other films, Norman had a love interest and it was no different in this film. He sang "Don't Laugh at Me (Cause I'm a Fool)" to Sally Wilson, played by British actress, Lana Morris.

Answer: Basil Fawlty ("Fawlty Towers")

Out of all the rudest and most caustic characters on British sitcom television, Basil Fawlty had to be the worst. It didn't matter that his poor henpecked wife got on everyone's nerves with her grating laugh and blue rinse hair styles. How could he call that lovely woman a "piranha fish" or "my little nest of vipers"? Basil was the owner of a small hotel in Torquay, Devon, and much to the annoyance of his wife Sybil, managed to annoy nearly every guest that visited.

He was aided and abetted by waitress Polly and hapless Spanish waiter, Manuel. Only twelve episodes were recorded and these were shown on television in 1975 and 1979. Regardless of the small number of episodes filmed, time and time again it has been voted one of Britains best loved comedies.

It starred John Cleese, Prunella Scales, Connie Booth and Andrew Sachs.

Answer: Keeping Mum

Although not as bumbling as Mr Bean, the Reverend Walter Goodfellow (Rowan Atkinson) still had a charming quality of being innocently naive. In the 2005 film, "Keeping Mum", Walter Goodfellow had one aim in life and that was to write a faultless sermon for a conference where he was invited to be the guest speaker. So much concentration went into getting the sermon right that he missed out on what was going on directly under his nose.

His wife (Kristin Scott Thomas) was having an affair with a golf instructor, played perfectly by Patrick Swayze.

His son was being bullied at school, his daughter was turning into a nymphomaniac, and his new housekeeper, played by Maggie Smith, kept on murdering people and dumping their bodies in the garden pond.

Answer: Trevor Peacock

Trevor Peacock starred in the series between 1994 and 2007. His character, Jim Trott, had an endearing stutter that had everyone laughing. Many was the time when he would say "no, no, no, no, yes" which was the complete opposite to his wife Doris, who would say "yes, yes, yes, yes, no". He constantly flirted and would often comment on the Vicar's "lovely arse".

Born in 1931, the real life actor is very different from his television persona in the "Dibley" series. He has acted for the Royal Shakespeare Company and taken on other television roles including "Eastenders" and "Last of the Summer Wine". He is also a talented musician, writing songs during the 1960s for Herman's Hermits, Adam Faith and Jess Conrad.

Answer: Tony Robinson

Although the series changed through different historical eras, the character of Baldrick remained as the same downtrodden servant, sometimes with a spark of intelligence but often as the slow dim witted fool. His master, Blackadder, was played by the wonderfully talented Rowan Atkinson.

The series started during the Middle Ages with Baldrick playing a dung gatherer. His rotting teeth and appearance of smelling like a sewer made us all cringe and hold our noses. Later series showed Baldrick during the Elizabethan period and then fighting as a private in World War I.

The character of Baldrick was played to perfection by Tony Robinson. He started as theatre actor and children's television presenter before progressing to comedy in the "Blackadder" series. His work has since included presenting the popular television series "Time Team", working with a team of archaeologists, digging at locations such as Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and Stonehenge.

Answer: Octavius

Impressionist and comedian, Steve Coogan, started his career as a voice actor, contributing to the popular 1980s series, "Spitting Image". He bought us the award winning character, Alan Partridge, to our television screens. His film appearances included "The Parole Officer" (2001), "Around the World in 80 Days" (2004) and "Hot Fuzz" (2007).

"Night at the Museum" and the sequel, "Night at the "Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian"" included the Roman general, Octavius. Octavius (Coogan) and American cowboy Jedediah (Owen Wilson) were both miniature characters from the museum displays, always bickering and at loggerheads with each other. They came to life during the night with other characters which included Rexy, the Tyrannosaurus Rex who thought he was a dog, Attila the Hun, Dexter the monkey and Theodore Roosevelt. Octavius and Jedediah worked together at the end of the film, stopping the baddies from stealing museum artefacts.

Answer: Kenneth Williams

Kenneth Williams (1926-1988) was a British comedy actor who is most remembered from his appearances in the "Carry On" films. He was a notable actor who also worked on stage, radio and television.

Popular "Carry On" characters that Williams portrayed included Doctor Orlando Watt in "Carry On Screaming" (1966), The Khasi of Kalabar in "Carry On Up the Kyber" (1968) and WC Boggs in "Carry On at Your Convenience" (1971). His nasal and whining voice served him well in all of these slapstick comedy films, with the catchphrase 'Ere...stop messin' about' attributed to him.

Although he suffered with depression for a good number of years, it is unclear whether he took his own life after taking an overdose of barbiturates.

Answer: Joe Pasquale

Joe Pasquale started his acting career at holiday camps in the UK, eventually becoming entertainment manager at Warner Holidays in Suffolk. His big break came when he appeared on talent show "New Faces" and came second overall. Other winners of this talent show have included Lenny Henry, Victoria Wood, Showaddywaddy and Jim Davidson.

Joe Pasquale brought us his cockney accent and famous squeaky voice during stand up comedy routines, both on stage and television. He has featured in many live shows including Live And Squeaky (1996), Twin Squeaks (1997), and Bubble And Squeak (2000). His other stage performances have included playing in front of the Queen six times at The Royal Variety Performance. He made a come-back on television in 2004 when he was crowned King of the Jungle in "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!" He beat off other contestants including Princess Diana's butler, Paul Burrell, Sheila Ferguson from The Three Degrees and Antonio Fargas who played Huggy Bear in the 1970s television series, "Starsky and Hutch".

Answer: Charlie Chaplin

Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in south London on 16th April 1889. His career took off after he toured America in 1910 with the Karno Troupe, sharing the same lodgings as another famous British comedian, Stan Laurel. We first saw Chaplin dressed in his trademark baggy trousers, derby hat and cane in the 1914 film "Kid Auto Races at Venice". From there on, "The Tramp" was born.

He entertained in silent movies for the next 22 years, making crowds laugh with his slapstick Keystone routines. To quote the great man himself, "A day without laughter is a day wasted."
