Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character had a hobby of stealing road signs and displaying them in his or her bedroom?

Answer: Pugsley

Pugsley's habit of stealing road signs (particularly ones that say "Danger" and "Stop") was his most well known quirk. His hobby was supported by the rest of his family members who enjoyed listening to and watching the subsequent auto disasters. Pugsley displayed the signs on the wall of his bedroom as if they were trophies and appeared to have dozens.
2. Which of the following characters never spoke a line in any of Charles Addams' original cartoons?

Answer: Uncle Fester

The only three members of the main Addams Family to have any lines were Gomez, Morticia and Grandmama. Gomez and Morticia had the vast majority of the lines while Grandmama only said things infrequently, usually while reading her grandkids bedtime stories. Uncle Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch never had any lines published.
3. In the comic strip, the Addamses actually had three children.

Answer: True

On several occasions, Gomez, Morticia or someone else would mention their baby but the baby was never seen. Only Wednesday and Pugsley were ever seen. The baby was not included in the 1960s TV series but was in the 1993 film "Addams Family Values" with the name Pubert.
4. Which of the following characters was NOT created by Charles Addams for his comic strip?

Answer: Cousin Itt

Cousin Itt was created for the TV series not the comic strip and was the creation of a producer not Charles Addams. Addams would occasionally use Itt in the comics infrequently, however, once Itt became a popular character.

Thing, the family's handy assistant, was originally an obscurely drawn human-like small being. It never spoke and was never addressed directly. It was usually seen lurking about in a dark corner. In all other media, Thing was either a disembodied hand or an arm that popped out of a box.

Uncle Fester was usually a solitary character. Initially, he never appeared with other members of the family but always by himself. Usually, he was seen stalking women or causing mischief in a public place. After a while, he was seen more and more with the family.

Ophelia Frump was a chronically depressed young woman with blondish hair and covered in flowers. She made very rare appearances in the comics and was usually seen with Grandmama. Her identity as Morticia's sister was confirmed in the 1960s TV series.
5. "The Addams Family" comics were canceled when the TV series debuted in 1964 because the show was so popular, no one was interested in "The New Yorker" comics.

Answer: False

The comic strip was briefly canceled during the run of the original television series because several editors and publishers at "The New Yorker" hated the show and found it morally degrading. Since the Addamses were nontraditional, they were unpopular with social conservatives and the magazine no longer wished to be associated with the accompanying cartoon.

However the cancellation was short-lived. Charles Addams still published macabre comics in the magazine but very few featuring recognizable family members until the "Addams Family" comics were brought back. On rare occasions, an editor would sneak one of Addams' cartoons with the main family into publication.
6. One of the most famous cartoons in the series was of Gomez and Morticia watching fondly as Lurch pours tar on which person or people?

Answer: Christmas carolers

This was one of a few Christmas-themed comics in the series. While the family appeared to practice the dark arts and occultism, they also appeared to celebrate Christmas as well. In this famous cartoon, Lurch, Gomez and Morticia stood on an upper balcony while Lurch was about to dump a cauldron of boiling tar on some carolers standing in front of the front door.

This cartoon was adapted into the 1991 film as the opening scene except the entire family (minus Fester) was present.
7. In another famous cartoon, Morticia announced that the children have returned from camp. How did they return?

Answer: In pet carriers

This was one of many references to Wednesday and Pugsley's devious behavior, usually to one another. They could often be seen trying to poison each other or torturing each other in some way, all in the name of fun. Pugsley was famous for experimenting with chemicals while Wednesday often played with a guillotine.
8. In the comic strip, whose mother was Grandmama?

Answer: Both

Grandmama (sometimes called Granny) was originally Morticia's mother. However, she was Gomez' mother in the 1960s TV series, so she was moved to be Gomez' mother in the comic. This was done so the comic strip and the TV series were consistent with one another.

In the many series, films and other media since then, Grandmama has switched back and forth between being Morticia or Gomez' mother.
9. Over the decades, the Addamses were seen accompanied by several pets. Which of the following animals was one of the pets they had?

Answer: Alligator

The alligator appeared to belong to Pugsley who was often seen walking it on a leash. Among the many other pets the Addamses had were Wednesday's octopus (named Aristotle), vultures, ravens, spiders and small monsters.

On the television series, the Addamses had a lion named Kitty Kat, though this was an invention for the series and not present in the comic strip. A two-headed pig did make an appearance in the cartoon but it was being served by Lurch to the family at the dinner table.
10. Which of the following character's appearance changed drastically over the course of the comic strip's run?

Answer: Lurch

In Lurch's first appearance in the comic strip, he looked somewhat normal and had a full, thick beard. He also had a focused look on his face, as opposed to the glazed look he would have in future appearances. He was still big and strapping, however.

Most of the other family members retained the same look throughout the series. Morticia was the exception. Initially, she was more voluptuous but gradually became much skinnier overtime. Her face also looked much different in her first appearance in the same strip where Lurch has the beard.
