Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in the UK does Esther de Groot come from?

Answer: Tackleford

Tackleford, West Yorkshire (probably) the UK's weirdness magnet and has been the setting for most of John Allison's long form webcomics to date - Bobbins, Scarygoround and Bad Machinery. As for the others, Wendlesfield is Tackleford's run-down neighbor, Peterswood was created by Enid Blyton and Porker's Park by Alexei Sayle. None of these cities exist; it would be a better world if they did.
2. Moody, snarky but grounded Susan Ptolemy comes next; her father is a successful electrician from Northampton, and she's studying medicine. She's part of a big family - how many sisters does she have?

Answer: Six

There are indeed seven girls in the Ptolemy family - Electra, Roberta, Greta, twins Anita and Tamsin, Eleanor and Susan, the youngest. They've all left the nest now which means there is no lightning rod left to diminish the tension between her parents, and the strain is starting to show...
3. Gentle Daisy Witton was raised by her Grandma after her parents died when she was young. They were doctors for Medicin Sans Frontieres, but were lost over a body of water while flying to their next job. Where did they crash?

Answer: The Bermuda Triangle

Poor Daisy, gentlest of the three friends, let it slip that when she was young she secretly hoped that one day they would be found alive on a desert island and returned to her, which is the sort of sweet sad bit that John Allison slides in amidst the madness now and again.
4. Now for the boys. Weird-haired, science fiction loving Ed Gemmell has come from Lewes in Sussex and instantly fallen head-over-heels for his goth classmate Esther. What subject are they both reading (not studying; you 'read' a subject at British universities)?

Answer: English

With Esther you would expect Drama, but that's really more of a hobby/superpower. Ed and Esther appreciate art - different kinds - but the pair of them are studying (all right, 'reading') English. Poor Ed suffers from unrequited love for drama llama Esther for his first two years, but apart from serious ankle injuries and concussion, nothing comes from it.
They still meet up in London after university when they are both working people.
5. Ed's best friend has mad skills with all tools and machinery, a luxuriant moustache and some history with one of the girls. Who is he and which girl?

Answer: Graham McGraw and Suzie

The straight-arrow, polymathic Graham McGraw of course, who shared some adventures, sadly not romantic ones, at school with Suzie (why were young McGraw and Suzie carrying those German Shepherds in issue 4? We have a right to know).
Graham has a warm friendship with Esther, but couldn't handle the drama.
Dean Thompson would probably be murdered in his sleep by Suzie.
Dean Thompson and Daisy? No. Just...no.
6. Now for some romantic partners. She rows, drinks, plays cricket and is very, very Australian. She also has a thing for Ed Gemmell who can't match her in any of those categories. Who is she?

Answer: Nina Archer

It's Nina, who one of the later holiday specials makes clear is out for something a bit more refined than your average Australian male. Ed fits this description perfectly.
Nina shows herself as a bit of a mean drunk, but genuinely regrets it when sober and as a result foreswears the booze for love. Her romance with Ed is one of the sweetest parts of an already pretty life-affirming comic.
7. Daisy has a rocky introduction to sexy times with a beautiful but narcissistic German artist. What is this demanding Berliner's name?

Answer: Ingrid Oesterle

Not a beginner's girlfriend by any means, Ingrid soon alienates all of Daisy's friends, tries to get Daisy to share living space with her in a squat in an old warehouse and finally, on the way out, outs Daisy to her beloved Granny. There are some feelings between the two, but at what a cost for Daisy.
8. Who disrupted the fiery relationship that McGraw and Susie shared in first year?

Answer: Emilia Martinez

Slightly Hippy, Spanish, guitar-playing and folk-singing Emilia Martinez swept McGraw off his feet (probably employing a god-tier knowledge of wood screws) late in first year, although she may have had a small role as one of the attendees at a wine and cheese party that a Fresher's Flu-ridden Esther gatecrashed very early on in the season. There was a different artist).
Although McGraw and Emilia seemed to be deeply in love, it didn't survive a drunken Christmas Eve in Northampton with Susie, and before long it was back to the supporting cast for Emilia, returning now and again before making up with everyone in the final graduation issue.
As an aside, the three other options were the fighting Head Girls of the self-published prequel comic.
9. This character only appears in a few issues of the comic, but she was a regular on the scene in Allison's famous webcomic 'Scarygoround'. Who was this legendary sidekick of Esther de Groot (their names sound rather alike)?

Answer: Sarah Grote

Sarah, with the gravity-defying hair and the common sense so often lacking from her buddy Esther, was a chief supporting actress on the final years of 'Scarygoround'. She makes a brief appearance when Esther briefly leaves university and returns to Tackleford, to find that her old friend has been locking lips with Esther's previous boyfriend, Eustace 'The Boy' Boyce.
Towards the end of the series, Sarah, now studying Textile Design at Bristol University, makes a trip up to Sheffield with her little sister Lottie, who now starring in her own webcomic series.
Big Lynsey, also from 'Scarygoround, makes an appearance as Ed Gemmell's one-night stand in an earlier comic from the series. Shauna Wickle is, of course, one of the main characters of Allison's excellent 'Bad Machinery' and the BFF of Lottie.
10. Who is the spoiled, entitled and devious nemesis, and later flatmate, of Esther who nearly gets her and Ed expelled?

Answer: Dean Thomson

It's Dean Thomson the Young Fogey IT undergraduate who in first year dreams up a semi-AI program to write essays for lazy students that Esther and Ed inadvertently help develop. In the second year he shares a flat with Ed and McGraw, killing Ed's expensive Italian Espresso machine and generally being a less than ideal flatmate.
In the third year, Ed and Esther are housemates with him and a bunch of IT students in a large shared house. There is friction between Thomson and de Groot involving his small, contraband emotional support dog.
He does have a sideline as a nude model at the three girls' art class, though, although they never find out as his face remains covered by a plague doctor mask at all times. It's the 'Ubuntu' tattoo that gives him away.
