Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with the Magic Kingdom icon. In which area of the Magic Kingdom will you find Cinderella's Castle?

Answer: Fantasyland

Although Cinderella's Castle can be viewed magnificently from Main Street, it is not a part of Main Street. Main Street is in the early American theme whereas Cinderella's castle is the focal point of Fantasyland which has a medival theme. Also, the "Hub" is used as a change of scenery from Main Street to Fantasyland.
2. Unless you visited Walt Disney World in the early years, you may not know that attractions in 1973 could only be entered with a ticket. The next three questions will deal Disney coupons. Which of these groups of attractions were all "A" coupons?

Answer: Omnibus, Horseless Carriage, Fire Engine, Cinderella's Golden Carrousel

All of the "A" coupons, with the exception of the carrousel were transportation on Main Street. I remember always coming home with "A" coupons left over. Strangely, the "A" coupons encouraged guests to ride by the Main Street shops, that would never happen now.

The other "A" coupon attraction was the Horse Cars. On a side note, the spelling of "carrousel" may seem strange but that's the way it's spelled in the 1973 park map.
3. At the opposite extreme from the "A" coupons were the "E" coupons. Which of these groups of attractions were all "E" coupons?

Answer: Country Bear Jamboree, Hall of Presidents, It's A Small World, Jungle Cruise

How times have changed. At the time all of these attractions were state of the art. The final "E" coupon attraction was the Haunted Mansion.
4. There were two different ticket books that could be bought. The eight ticket book and the twelve ticket book. How much did each adult book cost? The eight ticket book price is first.

Answer: $5.75 and $6.75

WOW! Sit back and imagine spending less than $30 for a family of 4. There also was a three hour walking tour that included 7 coupons for $7.50. There were ticket booths throughout the Magic Kingdom to buy more coupons. Walt Disney World also offered the Diamond Horseshoe Revue, If You Had Wings, Circle-Vision 360, and Walt Disney Story for free.
5. Which of these extinct attractions were available in 1973?

Answer: If You Had Wings, 20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea, Skyway, Plaza Swan Boats

Some of the long gone attractions; Main Street Cinema, Mike Fink Keelboats, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes, Mickey Mouse Revue, Skyway, Flight to the Moon, Plaza Swan Boats, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Diamond Horseshoe Revue, Circle-Vision 360, and the Walt Disney Story.
6. Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon have always been loaded with resorts and recreation. In 1973 there was also a different sort of show available outside of the Magic Kingdom gate. What was that show?

Answer: Water Ski Show

This show centered around Disney characters doing tricks on skis. Tickets were $1.00 to watch from the beach. While traveling to the Magic Kingdom from the ticket center, you could catch a glimpse of the show. On a side note, surfing was originally an idea for the Seven Seas Lagoon but imagineers couldn't come up with a viable machine to make waves without ruining the beaches.
7. Fort Wilderness was part of Walt Disney World in 1973. What aspect would you have NOT found in Fort Wilderness back in 1973?

Answer: Cabins or lodgings

Fort Wilderness was originally just for campers with no rooms available to guests. There were more than 700 sites on the grounds. Also, leaving from Fort Wilderness nightly was a Moonlight Cruise serving cocktails and soft drinks for a full evening of fun.
8. Where would you have found a character meal in 1973?

Answer: There was none

The character meal was a service who's time had not come. Today there are several character meals in the Magic Kingdom as well as throughout the world. I highly recommend you try them especially the Crystal Palace and Chef Mickey's.
9. Shops were so interesting and varied in 1973. Which of these groups were NOT shops along Main Street?

Answer: Liberty Square Silversmith, Tricornered Hat Shoppe, Heritage House of Liberty Square, Olde World Antiques

What a difference 30 years makes. Today Main Street is dominated by character products. The shops not from Main Street were all from Liberty Square.
10. Surprisingly, guest maps from 1973 and 2004 list the same number of attractions. 33 attractions for both times. Which of these answers best describes the main difference?

Answer: In 1973 each Main Street vehicle was considered an attraction

At times, the Disney Company stretches the term "attraction". There were 6 different Main Street vehicles that Disney considered seperate attractions.

So much has changed in the World in the past 30 years. Some old favorites have been demolished while some new world class attractions have been added. Would Walt recognize his dream?

Thanks for taking a trip back in time with me. Hopefully, the next 30 years will be just as much fun.
