quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chris Claremont, writer of 'The Uncanny X-Men', wrote the 1982 'Wolverine' series. Who drew the series?

Answer: Frank Miller

Frank Miller, besides sharing the name of the archvillain in one of the greatest Westerns, 'High Noon', has both written and drawn some amazing comics in his career, including a stint on 'Daredevil', a depiction of the Spartans' stand at Thermopylae called '300', and, most famously, 'Batman: The Dark Knight Returns'.
2. The series began with Wolverine on the hunt. Who, or what, was his prey?

Answer: A Wounded Bear

The bear has racked up a fair number of human victims. Wolverine hunts and kills it, only to find that it had been wounded by a hunter too lazy to track it down and finish the job. So, Wolverine teaches the hunter a harsh lesson.
3. The springboard of the story is that Wolverine, having received a slew of returned, unopened letters from his soulmate, Mariko, travels to Japan to find her. Once he arrives, what does his friend Asano reveal to him?

Answer: Mariko is married

Mariko's long-lost father has returned and, honoring some unspecified debt, has forced his daughter to marry a vile excuse for a man.
4. In the first issue Wolverine is challenged to a one-on-one duel, and gets stomped (literally). Who defeats him in this combat?

Answer: Lord Shingen

It's an interesting little fray. Wolverine has just been attacked with poison-tipped throwing stars, and is far from full strength. Shingen, on the other hand, shows himself as an expert with the wooden sword. He's ancient, but still a dynamo.
5. The second issue begins with Wolverine and Yukio facing a cadre of expert assassins, each one said to be the equal of a dozen men. By what name are the assassins collectively known?

Answer: The Hand

Yet another chance for Logan to show he's 'The Best'.
6. Yukio convinces Wolverine to help her take down a crime-boss known as Katsuyori. They discover Katsuyori entertaining Mariko and her husband with a performance of a play called 'The 47 Ronin'. What are 'ronin'?

Answer: Masterless Samurai

According to Wolverine, the play is about Samurai Warriors who avenge their master's death by killing the man behind it, knowing their actions will necessitate their own ritual suicides. Ironically, the actors taint the spirit of the play in an attempt to assassinate Mariko.
7. In the third issue Wolverine has a drunken dream of a Gaijin warrior attempting to single-handedly storm a fortress to win back his lady love, only to have his body riddled with arrows. The Gaijin is, of course, Wolverine. The dream ends with which character aiming an arrow directly at the fallen hero?

Answer: Mariko

Chris Claremont wanted to drag Wolverine to the depths of despair in this series. One route he followed was to have Mariko witness Wolverine at his most savage, causing him to fear that she would never see him as anything other than an animal, unworthy of life in a man's body.
8. What is the sound effect of Wolverine's claws shooting out of his knuckles?

Answer: Snikt!

A sound most powerfully rendered when Wolverine has his fist pressed up against Shingen's defiant face.
9. The series ends with The X-Men receiving a wedding invitation for Wolverine and Mariko. Scrawled on the otherwise pristine paper is Wolverine's demand that Nightcrawler not forget which item?

Answer: beer

With his mutant healing factor Wolverine's always been able to drink anyone under the table.
10. In the introduction to the trade paperback version of this series, Chris Claremont says he began to see beyond Wolverine as a mere 'psycho-killer' when he envisioned the essence of his character to be a 'failed' what?

Answer: Samurai

Claremont goes on to explain that a samurai's life must be one of the strictest discipline, always controlled, always graceful. Wolverine, on the other hand, must continuously deal with his primal nature, always struggle with the beast within, so any aspiration to be the 'samurai' to his Lady Mariko is seemingly doomed from the start. Of course, Wolverine himself proves this theory wrong (at least in this series).
