Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To learn basic archery, one of the most important factors is knowing where to place your feet. Which is the best stance out of the following choices?

Answer: Standing at right angle towards the target, one foot either side of the starting line

Similar to playing golf, the best stance to take before taking a shot is by standing at right angle towards the target. For example, if you are aiming a right handed bow, your left foot will be forward of the shooting line. Your back should be straight but shoulders slightly down and relaxed.
2. In basic archery, what is the groove at the end of the arrow called where you place the bowstring?

Answer: Nock

The nock is the notch at the end of the arrow. You should place the arrow between your index finger and middle finger, then place the nock against the bow string.
3. An archer has to correctly hook the string of the bow in to the bow hand with either their left or right hand. Which of these fingers should you NOT use?

Answer: Little finger

When you have nocked the arrow, the string should rest easily at the back of the joints of your index, middle and ring finger. The tip of your thumb can touch your index finger but only in a relaxed way.
4. When an archer prepares to take an archery shot, they extend their bow arm to draw the bow. With which part of their body should the elbow be level?

Answer: Shoulder

When you draw the bow, your elbow should be flexed out at shoulder height. Your back should still be straight but your shoulders relaxed to give the arrow a straight horizontal position before shooting.
5. What is the anchor position in archery?

Answer: Drawing the bow string back so it gently touches your nose

Preparing your anchor position is vitally important so that your aim is as accurate as possible. The bow string should gently rest against your nose with your index finger resting under your chin.
6. Once you are in the anchor position in archery, where should most of your body weight be transferred to, to give you more stability?

Answer: Back

Your legs should be slightly apart, back straight, elbow raised and shoulders relaxed. By placing the weight into your back muscles, this will give you better stability for when you are ready to take aim.
7. When setting up an archery shot, which should be your bow hand if you are right eye dominant?

Answer: Left

If an archer is right eye dominant, they should use a left handed bow. If they are left eye dominant, they should use a right handed bow. This means the dominant eye is closest to the bow string to make the aim more precise.

After you have checked your posture and now ready to commit to the full execution of the shot, the next stage in archery is to release the arrow. This should be done smoothly, without any jarring action.
8. The target in competitive archery is which of these colours, from outside to inside?

Answer: White, black, blue, red, gold

All targets according to the World Archery Federation should be, from the outer to the inner ring, white, black, blue, red and gold. Points are scored according to where the arrow lands within the target. The outer two rings are white, scoring one or two points. The next two rings are black, scoring three or four points. The next two rings are blue, scoring five or six points. Following this are two red rings, scoring seven or eight points. The inner rings are gold, scoring nine or ten points, with the central gold ring used as a tie-breaker.
9. What is the name of the competitive sport where an archer shoots an arrow at a flag and not a round target?

Answer: Clout archery

Clout archery involves shooting an arrow at a flag target a long distance away. The distance is normally 180 yards for men, 140 yards for women and between 80-140 yards for children under 18 years old. The flag itself is known as a "clout". The closer the arrow reaches the target, the more points are awarded. Each round of clout normally uses 36 arrows.
10. Which of these would you be if you were interested in archery?

Answer: Toxophilite

A toxophilite is a lover of archery. It is taken from the Greek words toxon for 'bow' and philos for 'loving'. The word was first phrased in the 1545 book "Toxophilus" written by Roger Ascham.
