Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the world's biggest cat?

Answer: Tiger

Tigers can grow to 11 feet long and weigh over 600 pounds. Their canine teeth can be 4 inches long. No two tigers stripe patterns are exactly alike. Tigers live in Asia and they live to be about 15 years old in the wild.
2. What does a male lion have that a female lion does not?

Answer: Mane

Male lions have wonderful ring of hair around their necks and their heads. Female lions do not. Lions are the second largest cat in the world. They are found in Africa and a few live in parts of the Middle East. They are unique in that they are very social and live in large family groups called prides. There is usually one adult male and many adult females with their babies in a pride.
3. Until Europeans arrived, there were no cats native to Australia.

Answer: True

Australia and Antarctica were the only continents not to have native cats. Australia is home to many unusual and unique animals and does have the dingo (which is a type of wild dog) ... but no native wild cat species.
4. Which one of these cats does not belong with the others?

Answer: Leopard

The leopard is found in Africa and Asia and is the odd-man out. The other three answers are different names for the same cat. The mountain lion is the largest wild cat in the western hemisphere and can be found from Canada all the way to the Andes mountains in South America.

This cat has many names depending on the region it is living in. A few other names are cougar, mountain cat and panther. This is a very adaptable cat that can live in almost any climate.
5. What is the name of the spotted North American wild cat that has a short stubby tail?

Answer: Bobcat

The bobcat lives in all kinds of habitats in North America and is well known for its adaptability and its very short tail. Most wild cats have a long tail for balance. It is about twice as big as the average house cat, but is nowhere near as big as the other choices. Also, it is the only one of the choices found in North America.
6. Which country would I travel to if I wanted to watch a jaguar in the wild?

Answer: Peru

Jaguars are found from southern Mexico to Central and South America, so I would want to go to Peru. The jaguar is the third largest cat on the planet and the largest cat in the Americas. It is usually a golden or rusty color with black rosettes on it for camouflage.

It is very skilled in the water and has some of the most powerful jaws of any feline. They have been known to hunt prey that is over 600 pounds. Because of its broad distribution, there are many subspecies, and there is a broad range of sizes and colors depending on where the cat lives.
7. Which of the following is a beautiful spotted cat found in the mountains of central Asia?

Answer: Snow Leopard

The snow leopard is a beautiful light gray colored cat with dark rosettes. They usually weigh between 60-100 pounds (27-54 kg) and their eyes are usually gray or pale green. This secretive cat is on the endangered species list due to people hunting it for its fur and loss of habitat. It is usually only found high in the mountains and is perfectly at home in the snow.
8. Where would I need to go if I wanted to see a sabre-toothed cat?

Answer: Museum (they're extinct)

The sabre-toothed cats died out around 9,000 years ago, so you would have to go to a museum to see their fossilized skeletons. They are also called a Smilodon and they lived in North and South America.. Because of the large number of remains found together at the La Brea tar pits in California it is believed that some of these animals may have lived in clans like the modern day lion.
9. What do you call a cat that has a lion for a father and a tiger for a mother?

Answer: Liger

A liger has a lion for a father and a tiger for a mother. The only other real cat in the choices is a tigon, which is a cat that has a tiger for a father and a lion for a mother. A liger is usually larger than a tiger and while it will have some stripes they are much fewer and much lighter in color.

They will often have light color rosette spots like baby lions have. Ligers like to swim like their mother tiger but are very sociable like their lion father. They get traits from both parents, just like we all do.
10. If a cat is described as melanistic, what does it mean?

Answer: They are a black cat

A melanistic cat is black in color. There are black panthers, black leopards, and black jaguars. These animals have the spots or rosettes found on a regularly colored cat of their species but they are hard to see as the underlying fur is also black. A mother cat with normal coloring can give birth to a litter of 5 kittens of which only one is black.
