Jamie (Mary's brother) named the dog Laddie. The dog actually saved them because she was barking very loudly and everyone got up and saw three men stealing their cow and horse. Thanks to the dog they still had their animals, even though when they crossed the lake they had to sell their cow and horse.

They brought back three big shad, and John showed them how to cook them on a fire.

Answer: Her dad, when she was twelve

Her dad gave it to her and Mary forgot all about it, until the beginning of the story.

Mary died when she was 80. She was one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Johnstown. Mary died two years after Duncan.

The dog, Laddie, was swimming alongside the wagon when a current pulled him away. Luckily the dog got up and out of the water a little farther down the river.

When the Ross family was traveling across the lake with the MacDonalds they had to sell their oxen. The person who bought them paid the very lowest price.

Danny threw a snowball at Mary and Mary threw one back. She didn't know that there was a lump of ice in it though. Just as she threw it Mr. Mitchell came out. Danny had a lump on his nose and it was bleeding. He was crying a lot too. Mary didn't get the strap but she got a big lecture. Grannie and her parents were very mad at her.

Answer: Mairi

Grannie's initials are the same as Mary's - M.M. She likes to knit and was very sad when she couldn't bring her spinning wheel all the way to their new home, but luckily she got another one.

On November 26th Baby Margaret died because she was very sick. They were going to bury her at the Presbyterian graveyard.

Mary and Duncan married in 1787. They had seven children, but the first boy died. There were three boys and three girls.

Although the first winter was very harsh all of the Ross and MacDonald families survived and Mary's new sister was as healthy as ever.
