Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where are the three tiny keys that unlock the locks on the journal hidden?

Answer: In the dollhouse, in the jewelry box, and inside the rocking horse

When Kendra and Seth first arrive, their grandfather introduces them to the playroom and gives Kendra three keys. He tells her to see if she can find the locks they open. These places (the answers) have small locks, which they open. Inside each is a tiny key for the locks on the journal Kendra finds.
2. What are the first immortal magical creatures the children see?

Answer: Fairies

As soon as they drink the special milk, their eyes are "opened" to the magical world's immortal creatures. Fairies are flying around the house, especially the garden. Imps are former fairies. The only nymphs in this book are water ones, called naiads. Seth sees the witch before drinking the milk because witches are mortal.
3. On Midsummer's Eve, the night all the evil creatures are free to roam wherever they want, Seth disobeys his grandfather and opens the window to the playroom. Why?

Answer: What looks and sounds just like a baby is sitting right outside the window, crying.

Seth just looked out the window to see the creatures. What triggers him to open it is the "baby" sitting just outside, crying. He tries to save it, but the baby is really a goblin in disguise who wants to kill, or perhaps capture, them.
4. Kendra never breaks the rules.

Answer: False

Before the children find out about the magical world, Seth goes in the forest a few times. Once he comes back and tells Kendra there is a beautiful park in the forest. Curiosity overcomes Kendra, so she goes with him to see the park.
5. What is so significant about the knots in the rope in Murial's shack?

Answer: They magically hold her in that shack, which is her prison.

Murial is an evil witch. Long ago, some Europeans punished her for her evil deeds by trapping her with 13 knots. Over time, most knots were undone by people asking her for favors, then blowing on the knot to undo it. By the time she is introduced in this book, there are only two more.
6. Seth captures a fairy. The next morning he discovers it is now an ugly creature (an imp, he later learns) and it gets away. What does Seth do after that?

Answer: He goes into the treehouse and works on the puzzle.

Seth at first thinks having a fairy for a pet would be fun, but that really backfires on him. He wants to be alone, but the fairies punish him. Grandpa explains to the children that if a fairy is kept indoors all night, it will turn into an imp.
7. How is Kendra able to escape the Forgotten Chapel, when her grandmother and Seth get captured?

Answer: The imps and Mendigo, Murial's puppet, are unable to touch her, so she runs out before Murial can get to her.

As the imps try to grab her, they discover they cannot. Her grandparents tell her it's because she has done no harm to magical creatures and has not yet worked magic. Murial could still touch Kendra, so she runs out before Murial reaches her.
8. How does Seth save Goldilocks (the chicken) from the evil monsters on Midsummer's Eve?

Answer: He grabs her and throws salt pouches at them.

The salt pouches are around the beds as an extra protection for that dreadful night. Seth had grabbed a few a bit before the monsters attack Goldilocks. He is able to grab her and throw the salt, which stings the monsters. Kendra is pretty much paralyzed with fear at this point. It turns out to be a very good thing he saves the chicken; she's really their grandmother!
9. Why do the satyrs really want batteries?

Answer: To power their TV.

Kendra and Seth meet the satyrs in the forest. The satyrs say they want batteries. When asked why, they at first say that they worship batteries. The kids don't believe them, so they tell the truth - that they are dying to watch TV again.
10. How does Kendra get Mendigo, the puppet, to stop following her?

Answer: She detaches his arms and throws them in the naiad lake.

Kendra knows she will have to work some magic in order to save her family, and when that happens, Mendigo will be able to touch her. She wants him out of the way. She discovers she can touch him. After the puppet's arms land on the lake, he tries to get them out with his foot. A naiad grabs and pulls him under.
