Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ROYGBIV is a memory aid that represents each colour of the rainbow. Which one of the following is NOT one of those colours?

Answer: Black

ROYGBIV is a mnemonic (pronounced nu-mon-ic), which is a tool that you can use to help you remember the colours of the rainbow and the correct order in which they appear. It is easier to remember it if you pronounce it like a name, for example ROY G BIV.
ROY stands for red, orange and yellow.
G equals green.
BIV stands for blue, indigo and violet.

As you can see the "B" stands for blue and not black.
2. It is a fact that three of the following are members of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Which one is not?

Answer: Picasso

When Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles they were very clever in naming them after famous Italian artists. The fourth member, who is missing from the list above, is Leonardo, named after Leonardo Da Vinci. Pablo Picasso is also an artist and while his name is European and may look and sound Italian he is, in fact, Spanish.
3. Three of these statements about certain sports are true, one is not a fact. Which one is not true?

Answer: Cricketers kick balls into nets to score

Yes they do use a ball in cricket but they normally hit it with a bat to score runs, they certainly don't kick it into nets to achieve this. Even if they fail to hit it with the bat they still have an opportunity to score runs for their team.
Golfers don't hit real birds; that would just be cruel. When they hit a score that is one stroke less than what is considered to be the par for a particular hole it is called a birdie. The marathon is a running race that is 26 miles long.
4. All of the following creatures lay eggs except one; which one is it?

Answer: Coyote

The coyote is a canine which means it is a part of the dog family and, just like female dogs give birth to live young, so do the coyote. Coyotes will usually have large litters of pups because most will not survive to become adults.

The platypus on this list is interesting because it is a mammal and mammals usually give birth to live young. The platypus, along with four species of the Australian spiny anteater (echidna), is different in this regard.
5. Which of the following statements that involve the colour red is NOT true?

Answer: All apples are red

Most of us enjoy the sight of a nice shiny red apple and when we think of apples it is usually the colour that we think of. There are however, many different varieties of apple and not all of them are red. The famous Granny Smith apple is green and the golden delicious is yellow.

There are also grey kangaroos in Australia and while red is usually associated with rubies they can range in colour from pink to blood red.
6. Christopher Columbus set out to explore the New World in three ships. Which of the following was NOT part of his fleet?

Answer: Corvette

Most of us know the name Corvette as a very famous car built by the Chevrolet section of General Motors but a corvette is also a type of warship that is slightly smaller than a frigate.
Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who was working for the Spanish when he set out with his three ships, the Nina, the Pinta (both caravels) and the Santa Maria (a carrack), in 1492. His mission was to try to find another way to the East Indies to get to their valuable spice markets. He didn't succeed at that mission but he did stumble on the Americas.
7. All of the following are arch villains of Batman except for one, who is an enemy of the X-Men. Which one is it?

Answer: Magneto

Magneto, like his name implies, has the power to control magnetic fields and he is the main villain in Marvel Comics' "X-Men" series. He is driven by a strong desire to protect mutants from jealous humans who he feels do not understand them. In the "X-Men" series he isn't always shown as a bad guy. There have been times when he has helped out the X-Men and, on some occasions, was even a member of the group.
8. Of the following words three are, in fact, swimming strokes. Which one is not?

Answer: Scrum

Scrum is a term used in rugby. A scrum is a way that is used by the referees to start the game again after one of the teams has committed an infringement (did something wrong) but something that is not so serious to be called a penalty. A scrum is started when three rows of players from one team come together against three rows from the other team. This creates a tunnel between the two teams. The ball is thrown into the tunnel and the two teams then try to push each other so they can get the ball into a spot where they will get an advantage.
9. The game of noughts and crosses has another name. In fact, there are three words that make up that name. Which of these does not fit?

Answer: Toc

Noughts and crosses or tic tac toe can even be called "X's and O's". It is played on a grid that is made up of nine squares. Three rows of three squares or three columns of three squares, whichever way you want to look at it. The game is played by two players (one is the noughts and the other is the crosses) and they will try to get three of their symbols in a row either up, down or across in a diagonal.
10. Which of the following days is NOT part of the Christian celebration of Lent?

Answer: Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving is celebrated in a number of countries around the world. Whilst we often hear about the celebrations in Canada and the United States there are also Thanksgiving celebrations conducted in places like the Netherlands, Granada and Liberia. The main purpose of these events is to give thanks and blessings for a good harvest and to celebrate the year that has just passed. Even though there are some religious undertones here they have no connection to the Christian festival of Lent.
