Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the person who steers the car around a Formula One track?

Answer: Driver

The driver steers the car. The constructor is the team that builds the car. Computers are used to help control the car. Most drivers have their own trainer to help keep them fit.
2. What is the maximum number of cars each Formula One team is allowed to enter in a race?

Answer: 2

According to the rules set down by the FIA, (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile), the sport's governing body, each competitor or team can enter two cars. More than two drivers may be used by a team (for example if a driver is injured or ill).
3. If there is a small accident in a race, what might come onto the track?

Answer: Safety Car

If there is an accident or a car stops in a dangerous position, a safety car may come onto the circuit so that the circuit can be cleared or the car removed. All the cars have to line up behind the safety car and may not overtake until the race restarts.
4. If a Formula One car needs to change tyres in the middle of a race, where might they go?

Answer: The Pits

The Pits is an area next to the start/finish line where teams will work on their cars throughout the weekend of a race. During a race, the main uses for the pits are for cars to change tyres, refuel (when required by the regulations) and for drivers to serve penalties.
5. If it is too dangerous for a Formula One race to continue what colour flag will be shown?

Answer: red

A red flag is shown to stop either a race or a qualifying session. Usually due to a serious accident (although the intensity of the rain at the 2009 Brazilian Grand Price also caused a red flag). A black flag is shown to a driver being disqualified. A blue flag is shown to a driver about to be lapped instructing them to move out of the way of a faster car. Purple flags aren't used.
6. How many drivers stand on the podium at the end of a Formula One race?

Answer: 3

The first three drivers will stand on the podium after the race along with a representative of the winning car's constructor. They are all awarded a trophy and the drivers then celebrate by spraying champagne.
7. Only men are allowed to race in Formula One.

Answer: False

Whilst is is not forbidden for women to race in Formula One, very few have done so. The first female entrant in a Formula One race was Maria Teresa De Filippis in 1958.

8. At the end of a race, a chequered flag is shown. Which two colours appear on this flag?

Answer: Black and White

A black and white chequered flag is waved as the winning driver crosses the finishing line at the end of the race. When this happens, all cars complete the lap they are on and the race is over. Any cars that have been lapped by the leader will not complete the full race distance.
9. Around the outside of the track there are usually lots of areas designed to slow cars down. Which is not one of these areas?

Answer: Water Zone

Usually a run-off area or gravel trap will be next to the track depending on how much room there is between the track and the spectators. A tyre wall is used around the outside wall of a circuit in case a car is going so fast that the run-off area or gravel trap do not stop the car.
10. If the track is too wet for dry tyres, but too dry for full wet tyres, there is another type of tyre that can be put on the car.

Answer: True

There is an intermediate tyre that can be put on a Formula One car if the track isn't dry enough to use a full wet tyre and too wet to use a full dry tyre. Some drivers will decide for themselves when to change tyres, and some drivers will let the team make the decision for them.
