Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Harry dreaming about the first time he woke up with his scar on fire?

Answer: Voldemort and Wormtail plotting to kill him

But it wasn't just a dream. Somehow Harry had managed to glimpse into the room where Wormtail and Voldemort really were, see the body of Frank Bryce, the snake Nagini, and hear Voldemort speak of his plans to kill Harry.
2. The Dursleys no longer kept Harry's school things locked up in the cupboard under the stairs. What made them change their attitude?

Answer: Harry had a godfather who had been imprisoned for murder

All Harry had to do was say that he was going to send a letter to his godfather to make his Uncle Vernon change his mind about denying Harry anything. Harry also inferred that if his godfather didn't hear from him regularly he would come in person to make sure Harry was alright. This fear prevented them from locking up Harry's owl to stop him from sending any messages.
3. The Weasleys tried to arrive at the Dursleys' by Floo powder. What impediment made this very difficult to do?

Answer: the Dursleys' fireplace was blocked up

The Dursleys had blocked up their fireplace because they had an electric fire. This absolutely fascinated Mr. Weasley, who had to blast a hole in the wall to get out. The Dursleys' fireplace was not normally on the Floo Network, but Mr. Weasley had it added for just that day.
4. Are you supposed to pass a test in order to apparate?

Answer: Yes

Nasty things can happen, like 'splinching', if you don't apparate properly, so a test and a licence are required. 'Splinching' is when only half of a person apparates, leaving the other half behind.
Bill, Charlie and Percy were able to apparate to get to the Quidditch World Cup, but the rest of them had to get there using a 'Portkey'. Although able to apparate, Mr. Weasley travelled with the younger wizards, to make sure everything was all right. It is impossible to apparate within Hogwarts.
5. What's the problem with leprechaun gold?

Answer: it vanishes after a few hours

Harry bought Ron a pair of Omnioculars at the Quidditch World Cup and Ron repaid him with leprechaun gold. Ron was angry when he later learned that the gold disappeared in a few hours, because Harry had never said anything about it. Ludo Bagman used leprechaun gold to pay a gambling debt to Fred and George, refusing to make good on the bet after the gold disappeared.
6. Who was found holding Harry's wand after the Dark Mark had appeared at the Quidditch World Cup?

Answer: Winky

Winky was Mr. Crouch's house elf, and he promptly dismissed her (by giving her clothes) when she was found holding Harry's wand, even though everyone protested that Winky would not have been capable of performing the spell. A 'Prior Incantato' spell, performed on Harry's wand, showed that Harry's wand had indeed been the one used to create the Dark Mark.
7. Winky gets a job working in the kitchens of Hogwarts.

Answer: True

However Winky believed she was in disgrace and spent a great deal of time getting drunk on butter beer. Although she was wearing clothes, she made no effort to keep either her clothes, or herself clean. Dobby also procured a job at Hogwarts, but he was proud of his freedom, and was actually earning a wage.
8. Why did Mad-Eye Moody turn Malfoy into a ferret?

Answer: Malfoy attacked Harry when Harry's back was turned

Like all bullies, Malfoy can't take what he dishes out. After countless criticisms of both Harry and Ron's parents, Malfoy became enraged when Harry made a rude remark about Malfoy's mother. Malfoy attacked Harry as Harry was walking away, Harry turned to respond, but Mad-Eye got to Malfoy first.
9. Among his closest friends, who refused to believe that Harry had not put his name into the Goblet of Fire?

Answer: Ron

Many students at Hogwarts refused to believe Harry's protestations of innocence, but it was Ron's opinion that mattered the most. With five older brothers, and a best friend known through out the wizarding attention. However Harry was hurt by Ron's refusal to believe him. This feud lasted until after the first task when Ron realized just what Harry was up against.
10. Ron was shocked to learn that Hagrid's mother was a giantess. He'd always believed that Hagrid had been hit by a bad Engorgement Charm when he'd been younger.

Answer: True

Hermione had already figured it out, of course. Harry hadn't given it much thought at all, but couldn't understand why everyone was so upset. Ron had to explain that giants were vicious by nature.
11. Sirius warns Harry to be careful around Karkaroff because he had been a Death Eater. Which one of the professors at Hogwarts, who also used to be a Death Eater, is frequently bothered by Karkaroff?

Answer: Snape

Snape was the only Death Eater who realized the error of his ways before Voldemort's fall. All Death Eaters had the Dark Mark burnt onto their forearms, as a means of identification and as a way for Voldemort to summon them. It was because this mark was darkening, marking the return of Voldemort's strength, that Karkaroff kept pestering Snape.
12. Who, besides Cedric Diggory, helped Harry figure out the puzzle of understanding the task of golden egg?

Answer: Moaning Myrtle

Cedric was the one who suggested that Harry take the egg with him when he went for a bath, but it was Moaning Myrtle who told him to open it underwater while he himself was underwater to listen to it. She was also the one who prodded him into realizing that the voices he heard belonged to merpeople.
13. Who brought Harry the Gillyweed, ensuring that he could breathe underwater and complete the second task?

Answer: Dobby

Harry, Hermione and Ron spent hours unsuccessfully trying to find a charm or a spell that would help. Harry fell asleep in the library where Dobby woke him ten minutes before the second task was to begin. Dobby gave Harry some Gillyweed which he had stolen out of Snape's office, enabling Harry to succeed at the second task.
14. What was the name of the wonderful device that Dumbledore siphoned his excess thoughts into?

Answer: pensieve

When Dumbledore found that his head was so full of thoughts and ideas that it was difficult to focus, he siphoned some of them out and put them into the pensieve. He found that it was often easier to sort them and look for patterns that way too.
15. Voldemort could have used the blood from any foe to make the potion that revived him work, but he held out for Harry's blood. Why?

Answer: the special protection Harry received from his mother would also pass to Voldemort

When Harry tells Dumbledore this part of the tale, Dumbledore is strangely pleased. It looks like this use of Harry's blood might become an interesting plot twist somewhere down the road.
