Fleur Delacour (don't you love the names J.K. Rowling gives her characters) comes back again in this book, only this time Harry finds out that she is to be the future Mrs. Bill Weasley, as they are planning to be married the next year.

Harry sees this and he, Ron and Hermione decide to follow him with a little help from Harry's trusty old cloak, and overhear (using Extendable Ears) Malfoy threatening the shopkeeper. This leads to something of an obsession of Harry's in this book, as he tries to find out what Malfoy is up to.

In Dumbledore and Harry's private lessons, Dumbledore takes Harry through memories of various people who had contact with Voldemort. In their first lesson, Dumbledore takes Harry into the memory of Bob Ogden, a Ministry of Magic employee who visited the Gaunt house located just outside Little Hangleton. We see Merope Gaunt, the daughter of Marvolo Gaunt, who is abusive and mean to her. Shortly after, Marvolo and his son went to jail, and Merope married Tom Riddle, something her family did not approve of at all.

She later gives birth to Tom Marvolo Riddle - Lord Voldemort.

At breakfast, before the Hogsmeade visit where Katie gets cursed, Ginny turns up with a note from Dumbledore for Harry. This informs him that his next lesson would be on the following Monday.

Ron is excited to get this watch, as it is made of gold and has "odd symbols around the edge and tiny moving stars instead of hands". It is his seventeenth birthday which, in the wizarding world, means he is now of age, so he gets nicer presents than he would for his other birthdays.

Although we know that Voldemort had hid one of the Horcruxes in a ring, Dumbledore speculated, using the memories and information given to him, that there was another Horcrux in the locket that had been passed down through the Gaunt family for ages. This locket had once belonged to Salazar Slytherin, the Gaunt family's ancestor.

It is through Hokey's memory that Dumbledore and Harry are able to see Tom Riddle as a young man, when he is working for Borgin and Burkes. Hepzibah Smith was a witch who had purchased Slytherin's locket. Voldemort murdered her to get it, but blamed the house-elf.

He even gave her new memories showing that she had accidentally killed her mistress, to make sure there would be no suspicion around himself.

As Harry's birthday is not until the end of July, he is not of age when Ron and Hermione go to have their tests. Harry will have to wait until the summer until he can legally apparate.

After Harry caught up with Snape and Malfoy, Snape told Malfoy to go, and he stayed to stop Harry. He would not allow Harry to curse him, and he would not curse him back at first, until Harry called him a coward. Snape then hit Harry with a curse that made a slash on his face and made him see stars for a few seconds, which allowed Snape to get a little farther away. Witherwings (a.k.a. Buckbeak) then flew in to fight Snape and to try to stop him, but even the Hippogriff could not, and Snape apparated once he was outside the grounds.

He got away, but hopefully in the next book, Snape will get whatever it is he deserves.
