Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is the only common room that Harry never enters?

Answer: Hufflepuff

As a Gryffindor, Harry spends much of his time at Hogwarts in the Gryffindor common room. He went into the Slytherin common room in "Chamber of Secrets" to discover if Draco Malfoy was the Heir of Slytherin. Harry went to the Ravenclaw common room just prior to the Battle of Hogwarts to look for Ravenclaw's diadem. Each of the common rooms are unique and designed to reflect that House's qualities.
2. In "Deathly Hallows", who is the head of Slytherin?

Answer: Horace Slughorn

Snape is the head of Slytherin up to the end of "Half-Blood Prince", at which point he kills Dumbledore and flees the school. Slughorn is then given the position. Snape returns to Hogwarts in "Deathly Hallows" and becomes headmaster. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are very upset when they hear of this news.
3. Which of these characters is not in Ravenclaw?

Answer: Susan Bones

Terry Boot is in the same year as Harry and is sorted into Ravenclaw in "Sorcerer's Stone". In "Order of the Phoenix", Terry goes to the Dumbledore's Army meeting at the Hog's Head with Anthony and Michael; there, Harry mentions that all three are in Ravenclaw. Susan Bones is also in the same year as Harry, but she is sorted into Hufflepuff in "Sorcerer's Stone".

She too joins Dumbledore's Army.
4. Which of the following characters is a Hufflepuff?

Answer: Justin Finch-Fletchley

Justin Finch-Fletchley is in the same year as Harry and is sorted into Hufflepuff in "Sorcerer's Stone". Jack Sloper is on the Gryffindor Quidditch team as a Beater in "Order of the Phoenix", so it can be assumed that he was sorted into Gryffindor at some point. Daphne Greengrass is sorted into Slytherin in "Sorcerer's Stone". Luna Lovegood is a Ravenclaw; Ginny mentions this on the train to Hogwarts in "Order of the Phoenix".
5. Which of the following characters is not a Slytherin?

Answer: Zacharias Smith

Marcus Flint is the Slytherin Quidditch captain in "Sorcerer's Stone". Theodore Nott is sorted into Slytherin is "Sorcerer's Stone". In "Order of the Phoenix", Sirius states that all of his family members were in Slytherin; therefore it can be assumed that his cousin, Andromeda, was in Slytheirn. Smith was a Hufflepuff, as stated by Harry at the Hog's Head meeting in "Order of the Phoenix".
6. What is Nearly Headless Nick's full name?

Answer: Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington

Nick, the Gryffindor ghost, mentions this in "Sorcerer's Stone" at the Sorting Ceremony. Despite this, most students continue to call him Nearly Headless Nick. Nick prefers to be called Sir Nicholas. When asked how a person can be "nearly headless", Nick angrily swings his head off of his neck, much to the shock of the new Gryffindors.
7. To whom did the Sorting Hat belong?

Answer: Godric Gryffindor

The Sorting Hat mentions in its song in "Goblet of Fire" that the founders had difficulty thinking of a good way to sort new students. Gryffindor came up the idea for the Sorting Hat and thus used his own hat. All of the founders, however, helped give the Sorting Hat its powers to see into people's minds. On Pottermore, J.K. Rowling stated that the hat uses Legilimency to achieve this power.
8. In "Sorcerer's Stone", who finishes in third place in the House Cup?

Answer: Ravenclaw

Gryffindor wins with 482 points. Slytherin comes in second with 472 points. Ravenclaw comes in third with 426 points. Hufflepuff comes in last with 352 points. Originally, Gryffindor is in fourth with 312 points, but Dumbledore awards Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville more points, ensuring their victory.
9. What kind of gemstones are in the Ravenclaw hourglass?

Answer: Sapphires

In "Order of the Phoenix", Professor McGonagall gives Luna Lovegood (a Ravenclaw) fifty points after the events in the Department of Mysteries. Harry then mentions that sapphires fall into the Ravenclaw hourglass. The Gryffindor hourglass has rubies and the Slytherin hourglass has emeralds. It is never mentioned what the Hufflepuff hourglass contains.
10. Where is the Slytherin common room located?

Answer: The dungeons

Harry learns this is "Chamber of Secrets" when he, Ron, and Hermione use the Polyjuice Potion to gain access to the Slytherin common room. Harry describes the room as dark and full of green light and skulls. The green light is due to the room's location under the lake. The password is "pure-blood".
