Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Wynyards the name of?

Answer: Both.

Wynyards School is named for the small Cotswolds town in which it is situated. The town of Wynyards appears to be based on Chipping Campden - many of the features mentioned in the books can still be seen in the town today.
2. When Lorna leaves her old school to start at the new one, where does she live?

Answer: With her aunt.

Lorna would have been leaving Bury House soon, even if her behaviour hadn't precipitated it. However she was expecting to go on to the boarding school which her sisters had attended, but family finances wouldn't allow it. Her mother has arranged for Lorna to stay with her own sister, so Lorna will live with her Auntie Kath and go to school with her cousin Kit.
3. Who meets Lorna when she arrives at Wynyards, and where does that meeting take place?

Answer: Her cousin Kit at the station.

Despite having mixed feelings about Lorna coming to live with them, Kit cycles to the station to meet her cousin. However Lorna falls off her bicycle on the very steep road up from the station, and they have to leave it to be mended and walk the rest of the way home.
4. When Lorna is shown around the building, she is thrilled by all of the books on one of the bookcases. Which author has autographed a copy of her book for its owner?

Answer: Josephine M. Bettany.

Kit and her mother had met Jo Maynard while on holiday in Brittany, since when Kit had received a copy of one of the author's books each Christmas. Kit had trouble remembering to use the lady's married name, although she did agree that it was daft to use 'Miss' for someone who is the mother of four small children.
5. How many pupils are there at Lorna's new school?

Answer: 245

There were fifty pupils at Lorna's old school. One of the reasons that she has been sent to Wynyards is so she can meet with more competition in a bigger school. Not all the pupils live in the small town, some travel in daily by train from the surrounding villages.
6. With which prefect do Lorna and the rest of Upper Third find themselves at odds on the first day of term?

Answer: Ardath Penney.

Since their form-mistress has to travel from the Scottish Highlands, and hasn't yet arrived, Ardath comes to dictate the form's new timetable. Unfortunately, she goes so fast that they can't all keep up, so eventually Ardath scribbles it onto the blackboard for them to copy down.
7. Unintentionally, Lorna manages to upset one of the girls in her form on several occasions. Which girl?

Answer: Meg Thompson.

Their argument is heard by Miss Grace (the Headmistress) and both girls are thoroughly punished. When Lorna's mother hears about the incident, she decides that Lorna doesn't deserve to go home for the forthcoming half-term holiday, and she will have to stay at Wynyards.
8. Which illness breaks out causing the headmistress to close the school for two weeks?

Answer: Chicken-pox.

Despite the extra long break, Lorna is still not allowed to go home. However, her closest friends from Wynyards have all had the disease, so Lorna doesn't lack for company during the fortnight's quarantine.
9. What does Lorna do on a very wet day during quarantine?

Answer: Paints pictures for a scrap screen.

Mrs. Arnold has a large pile of old magazines; she, Kit and Lorna start painting some of the illustrations for the screen. When they have enough pictures, they will be cut out and stuck onto canvas which has been stretched tightly over the framework of the screen. Each side of the screen will be covered in clear varnish to protect it.
10. Who arrives, unexpectedly, to see Lorna one day towards the end of the quarantine period?

Answer: Her mother.

Because one of Lorna's sisters has returned home for a week and will care for her father, Lorna's mother is able to visit her youngest daughter for a few days. Inexplicably the daily help put the telegram announcing her arrival into the coffee tin, so no-one was expecting her!
11. Why is the Headgirl absent from school for the rest of term after the quarantine period?

Answer: She fell down the stairs onto a bicycle and broke her leg.

Mary Anson caught her heel in a loose stair rod, and broke two ribs and sprained her wrist as well as the other injuries. Unfortunately for the Upper Third, Ardath Penney takes over in Mary's absence.
12. Why does Lorna's older sister come to see her early one morning?

Answer: Their father is dying.

Freda comes to fetch Lorna home because their father, who has been ill for as long as Lorna can remember, is not expected to live for more than a few days longer.
13. Why can't Lorna go home at the end of term?

Answer: Her sister-in-law is ill.

Her recently widowed sister-in-law is ill, and needs to live in Madeira. Lorna's mother will go with Lizette to help look after her two small children. The family home is to be sold to help pay for the trip, and Lorna will stay with her aunt and cousin till the end of her schooldays.
14. What is the subject of the scholarship exam instigated by Sir Peregrine Amory?

Answer: Civics.

The exam is to be taken by selected sixth form pupils from Wynyards and five other local schools. It is won jointly by Lorna's cousin Kit, and Kit's friend Molly Johnson from Wenley.
15. How is Lorna's first report from her new school summarised?

Answer: An all-round good report.

After an appalling report from her last school, which had caused her mother to remove her immediately, Lorna is very pleased when her Auntie Kath tells her that the new one finishes with 'An all-round good report, and thoroughly well deserved.'
