Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 2008 season, the Tennessee Titans had the best record by finishing at 13-3. Which team had the worst record in the season?

Answer: Detroit Lions

The other teams listed had a fairly good season and won at least eight games. The Lions went the wrong way in 2008. After finishing up 2007 with a 7-9 record, they didn't even bother winning one game in 2008. Their biggest chance of winning a game came in Week 6, but they lost to the Vikings 12-10.

The Lions continued having problems protecting their quarterbacks. They allowed 52 sacks in the season, and had averaged 58.3 sacks over the previous three seasons. This was including QB Jon Kitna being sacked 63 times in 2006.

The morning after the 2008 regular season ended, head coach Rod Marinelli was fired. He was in his third season.
2. This San Francisco 49er began his career in 1985, and took the league by storm behind the arm of quarterback Joe Montana. Throughout his career, he led the league six times in receiving yardage and six times with the most touchdowns in a season. He played 16 seasons for the 49ers. Who is this football great?

Answer: Jerry Rice

Jerry made it to the Pro Bowl an amazing 13 times in his career. Being a two-way street, Rice would not have had the career that he did if were it not for the arms of quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young. His final touchdown reception as a 49er came from the arm of QB Jeff Garcia. Jerry retired in 2004 with the most receiving yards in NFL history with 22,895.

He also scored 197 touchdowns from the air and another 10 from the ground.
3. This quarterback nicknamed "Broadway Joe" gave the world a bold guarantee that his team would win Super Bowl III against the Baltimore Colts. Joe and his team did win it. Who is he?

Answer: Joe Namath

On January 12, 1969, Namath and his New York Jets were the underdogs against the Colts. However, after the Jets' defense intercepted three Earl Morrall passes in the first half, Namath throwing for over 200 yards, and running back Matt Snell rushing for 121 yards, the Jets couldn't lose. They won the big game 16-7.
4. Which NFL team began their franchise by losing their first 26 games in a row?

Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers started their franchise in 1976 by going 0-14 under head coach John McKay. 1977 wasn't much better as they lost their first 12 games before the team finally won their first-ever game. That win came against the embarrassed New Orleans Saints 33-14.

The St. Louis Cardinals also bit the turf to the Bucs the following week and lost 17-7. The Buccaneers made their first playoffs in 1979, then experienced their first Super Bowl title in 2003, Super Bowl XXXVII against the Raiders.
5. What is it called when a player tackles the opposing player by grabbing his jersey behind the neck?

Answer: Horse collar tackle

Many injuries have occurred due to this type of tackle by pulling a player to the ground. The NFL instituted the rule in 2005, primarily due to Cowboy safety Roy Williams. Williams was consistent in tackling offensive players with the ball in this fashion. It was ruled a 15-yard personal foul penalty, and the league has fined and/or suspended players for this type of tackle.
6. In 2002, Cowboy running back Emmitt Smith became the leading rusher in NFL history. He broke the career record of which running back nicknamed "Sweetness"?

Answer: Walter Payton

Emmitt played 13 of his 15 seasons with the Cowboys, and retired as an Arizona Cardinal in 2004. Smith rushed for 18,355 career yards. Payton was a career Chicago Bear from 1975-1987. He rushed for 16,726 yards. The NFL world mourned when Payton died in November 1999 of cancer.
7. In 1972, which team had a perfect season record, the first since the Chicago Bears did it in the 1930s with no losses or ties?

Answer: Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins had a stellar season in 1972 behind the head coaching of Don Shula. They had the quarterbacks of Bob Griese and Earl Morrall, and the running backs of Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris. They also had the receiving hands of Paul Warfield.

The Dolphins went a perfect 14-0 in the season. Originally, Csonka was the only team's running back to rush for over 1000 yards in that season. Later, and after statisticians went over the season records, they credited Morris with just enough yardage to meet exactly 1000 yards.

It was the first time in NFL history that one team had two 1000-yard rushers in the same season. The Dolphins went on to defeat the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl, 14-7.
8. Arguably the greatest head coach in NFL history, Green Bay Packer Vince Lombardi helmed the team for nine seasons. He retired in 1967, but then came back for one season with which team in 1969?

Answer: Washington Redskins

In nine seasons with the Packers, Vince took them to three NFL Championships and two Super Bowls. His career record as the big cheesehead was 89-29-4. Lombardi was coaxed out of retirement in 1969 with the Redskins for a 7-5-2 season. He died the following year.
9. Who was the first running back to rush for 2000 yards in a season?

Answer: O.J. Simpson

Simpson, the former USC Trojan star, rushed for 2003 yards with the Buffalo Bills in 1973. The runner-up running back in the season was Packer John Brockington who rushed for 1144 yards. Simpson's next best season was in 1975 when he rushed for another 1817. He retired with the 49ers in 1979.
10. In Super Bowl XLII in 2008, the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots. In Super Bowl XLI in 2007, the Indianapolis Colts defeated which team?

Answer: Chicago Bears

The 12-4 Colts hooked up with the NFC Champion Bears who went 13-3. The Colts won the Super Bowl 29-17. The Bears' Devin Hester started off the scoring with a 92-yard kickoff return. By halftime, the score was 16-10 in favor of the Colts. One of the Colts' highlights in the game was a fourth quarter 56-yard interception for a touchdown by Kelvin Hayden.

Other positives were Dominic Rhodes who rushed for 113 yards, and Peyton Manning, whose arm threw for 247 yards.
