Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the cover of a typical Hardy Boys novel is the name of the author: Franklin W. Dixon. This, however, is a "pseudonym" or "pen-name", a make-pretend name that an author uses. What is the real name of Franklin W. Dixon?

Answer: Several people have been "Franklin W. Dixon"

The concept of the Hardy Boys was created by Edward Stratemeyer in 1927. His company, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired authors to write the stories based on outlines that the Syndicate provided. Canadian author Leslie McFarlane wrote many of the early adventures but several other authors wrote Hardy Boys stories over the years.

The author was paid a flat fee for writing the stories--with the earliest stories this was $125--with no royalties (bonuses based on the number of books sold).
2. One of the Hardys is described as being the older, more serious brother with dark hair and dark eyes. He also dates Callie Shaw. Who is he?

Answer: Frank Hardy

Frank is the older brother. In the early stories he is the same grade as his younger brother because a long-term childhood illness caused him to be kept back a year in school. In some of the books, Frank is the captain of the football team.
3. One of the Hardys is the younger, more impulsive brother. He has blond hair and blue eyes. He dates Iola Morton. Who is he?

Answer: Joe Hardy

Joe is the younger brother. He is more spontaneous than his older brother, Frank. His girlfriend, Iola, is the sister of the Hardy Boys' friend, Chet Morton. He might be described as the brawn of the operation as opposed to Frank's brains.
4. The Hardys often call on their friends for help. One of their friends is described as a big eater who lives on a farm. He seems to have a new hobby--such as spelunking (cave exploring) or botany (studying plants)--almost every book. Who is he?

Answer: Chet Morton

Chet is often more nervous about investigating the mysteries than the Hardys. When push comes to shove, however, he is always by the Hardys' side. He is also the brother of Joe's girlfriend, Iola.
5. This is another friend of the Hardys. He is six foot tall, blond and muscular. He is talented at many sports. He owns a bloodhound and a Great Dane who make occasional appearances in the stories. Who is he?

Answer: Biff Hooper

Biff's real first name is Allen. His bloodhound's name is Sherlock and his Great Dane's name is Tivoli. They make occasional appearances in the books. He also owns a motorboat.
6. Here's another friend of the Hardys. His parents immigrated to the United States, but he was born here. His father owns a construction company, for which he works. Who is he?

Answer: Tony Prito

Tony's parents came from Italy. When Tony is seen driving a vehicle it is often a truck from his father's company. He also owns a speedboat named the Napoli, which he often uses to assist the Hardys.
7. Here's one last friend of the Hardys. He is described as artistic and an electronics genius (at least in the later books). He is a skilled tennis player. Who is he?

Answer: Phil Cohen

Phil is also Jewish. At the time the Hardy Boys series began, it was unusual to have non-Christian characters in American literature for children appearing as significant characters portrayed in a positive way.
8. The very first Hardy Boys book was written way back in 1927. What is its name? (Hurd and Adelia Applegate are supporting characters in this adventure.)

Answer: The Tower Treasure

"The Tower Treasure" deals with a theft of money and jewels from the Tower Mansion (owned by the Applegates). The father of a friend and classmate of the Hardys is falsely accused, but eventually the Hardys are able to clear his name. This book was adapted for television as part of "The Mickey Mouse Club" in 1956.
9. While many of the Hardy Boys' adventures are in the United States, they sometimes need to travel to another country to solve a mystery. Which country did they NOT travel to in one of their books?

Answer: They didn't travel to the USSR.

They visited Australia in "The Firebird Rocket". They visited Mexico in "The Mystery of the Aztec Warrior". They visited Greece in "The Shattered Helmet". To the best of my knowledge, they did not visit the USSR in any of the original 58 books. During the period when the books were written (1928-1978), there was quite a bit of political tension between the US and the Soviet Union.
10. The Hardy Boys are the sons of the famous private detective Fenton Hardy. Before he went into business for himself, he was a detective for the police department of a major US city. For which city was he a detective?

Answer: New York, NY

Fenton Hardy's previous career in the NYPD is occasionally mentioned in the books. Although the hometown of the Hardy Boys, Bayport, is never conclusively placed in a state, many fans of the series assume that Bayport is within about two hours of New York City.
