Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Blood of Olympus" who is NOT part of the mission to escort the statue of Athena to Camp Half-Blood on Long Island?

Answer: Octavian

At the end of "The House of Hades" (the fourth book in the series), the seven heroes mentioned in the prophecy continue on their journey, while the statue of Athena Parthenos, retrieved in Rome, is taken back to America by Reyna (a praetor from the Roman heroes' camp), Nico (the son of Hades), and Coach Hedge (the satyr/faun who has been their protector). Octavian is the Roman pontifex who is one of the villains of the story.
2. In the opening chapters of "The Blood of Olympus" Jason, Piper, and Annabeth in disguise must infiltrate a gathering of ghosts. On which Greek island does this take place?

Answer: Ithaca

"The Blood of Olympus" begins with Jason disguised as a decrepit old man, with Piper and Annabeth as serving maidens, visiting the ruins of the palace of Odysseus on Ithaca. Here the ghosts of the suitors whom Odysseus killed in Book 22 of Homer's "Odyssey" are gathering. The mission is to learn where the enemy giants will attack in Greece and what is the safest route to get there.
3. In "The Blood of Olympus" the heroes call in at Olympia and take what minor goddess on board the Argo II?

Answer: Nike (Victoria)

Niké (or her Roman equivalent, Victoria) is conflicted between her Greek and Roman personae as the Greek and Roman heroes confront each other back in America. She forces the seven heroes to compete in her own deadly games in the ancient stadium, but is eventually imprisoned in an unbreakable net and taken on board the Argo II.

The other goddesses mentioned all appear elsewhere in the series "The Heroes of Olympus", Hygeia when the heroes reach the sanctuary of healing at Epidaurus, Nemesis in the earlier story ("The Mark of Athena"), and Chione (the goddess of Snow) in "The Lost Hero".
4. In "The Blood of Olympus", the heroes are trying to prevent the awakening of what deity?

Answer: Gaea (Earth)

The great enemy in this series is Gaea, the primeval goddess of Mother Earth. In Greek myth she and her consort Sky are the first generation of form. She is the mother of the second generation, the Titans (who were the enemy in the "Percy Jackson" series), but also of fearsome giants and monsters. If she wakes, it will mean the destruction of all human civilisation on the planet.
5. What hunter from Greek myth is pursuing the three characters who are escorting the statue of Athena?

Answer: Orion

All of these heroes are associated with hunting and with the bow. Orion was a favourite of the goddess Artemis but was killed by a scorpion. In her grief Artemis had him placed in the heavens as the constellation of Orion "the Hunter".
6. In "The Blood of Olympus", what deity do the heroes NOT encounter during their journey around the Peloponnese?

Answer: Heracles (Hercules)

Heracles does appear in "The Heroes of Olympus" series, but in the third volume, "The Mark of Athena". He has been placed by Zeus at the entrance of the strait of Gibraltar to challenge any demi-gods who are attempting to enter the Mediterranean Sea.

In "The Blood of Olympus", the heroes meet the twin gods, Artemis and Apollo. on their sacred island of Delos, and Asclepius, the god of healing, at his medical sanctuary in Epidaurus.
7. In the series "The Heroes of Olympus", which character has the ability to change shape into an animal form?

Answer: Frank Zhang

Frank Zhang is an interesting and complex character, whom we first meet in the second volume, "The Son of Neptune". He himself is a son of Mars, but his family is descended from a Greek hero, a grandson of Poseidon, who had the ability to change into animal form, This family migrated to Rome, where one member served as a Roman soldier in the east, was captured, and taken to China.

His descendants eventually ended up in Canada, where his mother met Mars, the god of war, and gave birth to Frank.

His ability to change shape comes in very handy during the heroes' adventures.
8. In the series "The Heroes of Olympus", which of the main characters is the daughter of the goddess of love?

Answer: Piper

Each of these is the daughter of a Greek or Roman god. Piper McLean is the daughter of Venus (the Roman equivalent of Aphrodite) and has the power of charm-speech, that is to influence others just by the sound of her voice. She also wields Katoptris, a dagger that once belonged to Helen of Troy. Annabeth Chase is the daughter of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare. Hazel Levesque is the daughter of Pluto (Greek: Hades) and can raise gems from the earth. Reyna is the daughter of Bellona, a Roman war-goddess.
9. At the end of "The Blood of Olympus", which god does Zeus blame for allowing matters to get out of control?

Answer: Apollo

After the defeat of the giants, Zeus (or Jupiter, in his Roman form) blames Apollo for encouraging Octavian in his mad quest to destroy the Greek heroes and promises that "we will speak of your punishment later". This is the jumping-off point for the new series "The Trials of Apollo", whose first volume "The Hidden Oracle" was published in 2016.
10. In "The Blood of Olympus", where in Greece does the final encounter between the heroes and the giants take place?

Answer: The Acropolis at Athens

The heroes initially believe that the enemy will be attacking Mount Olympus in central Greece, but as the gods have long since re-located Olympus to the 600th floor of the Empire State Building in New York, the Acropolis at Athens is seen as the heart of Greek culture, and it is here that the giants and the monsters are assembling.
