Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which former Head Girl, who has just become a mother, does Joey visit at the beginning of the book?

Answer: Gisela Mensch

Gisela Mensch, née Marani, has a baby daughter called Natalie after her grandmother's dead daughter. Joey is reluctant to be Head Girl of the Chalet School and talks to Gisela about it. Gisela tells her she is being cowardly, and reminds her that she is a leader in the school and that many girls will look up to her. Joey still has doubts, but decides to go ahead with the job. Both Gisela and her husband Gottfried, Frieda's brother, hope it will be the making of Joey.
2. Who does Joey propose as the new editor of the 'Chaletian' at the prefects' meeting?

Answer: Eustacia Benson

Eustacia, now known as Stacie, is bedridden and living with the Russells at the Sonnalpe. As Jo will have her hands full with the Head Girl job, she decides to train Stacie as editor for the 'Chaletian', not only because Stacie is intelligent and a strong reader, but as a way of giving her a fresh start.

The girls have reservations, but Joey reminds them that Stacie is a very different person nowadays. Frieda gives Joey her backing, and the rest soon follow.
3. Joey takes a disastrous prep session with the Middles. Which of these events does NOT happen?

Answer: Margia Stevens gets her finger trapped in the door.

Margia doesn't hurt her finger, though she is late to prep due to having a messy locker and not being able to find her things. Cornelia is tilting her chair and crashes into Ilonka, knocking over both their desks, and Joey makes her stand for the rest of prep. Evadne gets into trouble when she tries to share Violet's history book, and Violet accidentally knocks ink over Cyrilla Maurus. Finally, Elsie blows up a 'squawker', a toy which makes a horrible noise as it releases air, and the resulting noise causes chaos. Miss Annersley hears and condemns Elsie to do her prep with the Juniors for a week.

By the end of prep, Joey is not in a good mood.
4. Why is Madge worried about the Robin?

Answer: She is increasingly breathless and feverish.

Robin is like a little sister to Joey, so when Joey visits Madge at the Sonnalpe and discovers that they are worried about the Robin's health, she breaks down and cries. Robin's mother died of tuberculosis and was very frail, and she has inherited her mother's poor health. Madge and Jem have noticed that she gets feverish in the evenings and is short of breath, and are hoping a specialist will be able to see her. Joey confides in Marie about the Robin - Madge is cautious about who Joey can talk to, as only a few of the girls will really understand - and says she will never forgive Stacie if anything happens (since Stacie caused the girls to be delayed on an excursion, which caused the Robin to worry and was potentially detrimental to her health - if you've read 'Eustacia Goes to the Chalet School', this'll sound familiar).
5. Maria Marani and Elsie Carr make utter fools of themselves, to the amusement of Joey and the rest of the school, after a suggestion goes horribly wrong. What happens to the girls?

Answer: They stick their heads through the backs of chairs, and get stuck.

Frieda, Margia and Ruth Wynyard are the unlucky girls who get covered in glue, but Elsie and Maria get the urge to find out if they can fit their heads through the backs of peasant chairs. Maria claims they can and Elsie thinks they can't, so both girls push their heads through the holes in the chair backs - and get stuck.

The younger girls try to free them, to no avail, and Hansi, the school handyman, has to saw the chair backs to get the girls out. Joey and her friends find the whole thing hilarious.
6. Juliet Carrick comes to Oberammergau with the school for the half-term trip to celebrate Madge's birthday. Before they set off, she and Joey go for a walk and bump into Mrs Frank Hillis, a woman Joey met earlier in the story. She and Juliet are not pleased to see each other, and Juliet reveals that Mrs Hillis used to be Kay O'Hara, and they know each other from university and were friends until Kay turned on her. Why did Kay fall out with Juliet?

Answer: She found out about Juliet's father and didn't want her tarnishing the family name.

Before marrying Frank Hillis, Kay O'Hara was an old university friend of Juliet, and a few years her senior. Juliet had been lonely and homesick and missed the Tyrol, as Madge had given her a home after her parents dumped her (see 'The School at the Chalet' and 'Jo of the Chalet School').

At first, Kay had befriended Juliet, and Juliet had fallen in love with Kay's twin brother Donal. However, Kay later found out about Juliet's father causing trouble in India, and dropped her like a hot potato because the O'Haras are an old Irish family, and Kay didn't want Juliet disgracing the family name.

As Donal is very submissive around Kay, he stopped writing to Juliet. Joey is furious, and promises to pray to G-d to make things alright for Juliet.
7. The Chalet School go to see the Passion Play at Oberammergau, though Mademoiselle de Lachenais has doubts about allowing some of the younger girls to go after a group of them get into trouble. What do they do?

Answer: Paint their faces and dress up as Native Americans

The usual suspects - Cornelia Flower, Evadne Lannis, Ilonka Barcokz, Maria Marani and Elsie Carr - paint their faces with Anne Seymour's paints and decide to play at being Captain Smith and Pocahontas, inspired by the American girls' tales of American history. To the older girls' horror, they run around making war cries, Elsie falls in a stream, and loads of people from the village see them.

The prefects and Miss Stewart have a nightmare trying to get the paint off the girls' faces. Mlle de Lachenais has half a mind to stop the girls going, but decides to let them off - though they have to spend the rest of the time under supervision - and everyone goes to see the play. Even the American girls are moved by it, and Joey is so overcome with emotion that she faints!
8. The Middles' antics don't stop when they get back from Oberammergau - they encounter a little orphan girl and decide to keep her in the games shed. This orphan girl, incidentally, will become a Chalet School pupil herself, and return as a mistress in several books' time. Who is she?

Answer: Biddy O'Ryan

The scruffy little orphan with the Irish brogue is a far cry from the Miss O'Ryan of the later books! The Middles are on a walk when they hear someone crying, and discover a little Irish girl called Bridget - Biddy for short - who has recently lost her mother and stepfather in a car crash.

She was going to be sent to a home, but ran away. The Middles decide to give her food and clothes and put her up in the games shed, although Biddy eventually begins to tire of living on stolen food. Unfortunately, the older girls suspect something strange is going on when they see water on the floor of the games shed, and Joey goes to investigate and finds Biddy in there.

She takes Biddy to Mlle de Lachenais and Matron, and the decision is made to house her at the school. Frieda suggests that the Guides look after her.
9. Joey goes for a walk in the sunshine and bumps into Donal O'Hara. What does she say to him when he comments on the heat?

Answer: "I hope you'll end up in a hotter place than this!"

Ouch! Joey is furious with Donal and tells him in no uncertain terms what she thinks of his rotten behaviour towards Juliet. Donal is angry because he picked up her handkerchief for her, and thinks she is being rude. Joey thanks him, but explains why she is angry and that Juliet is her friend, and that she has been badly hurt in the past and her parents' behaviour is not her fault.

She tells Donal about Juliet's past, and Donal relents and asks Joey to help him get back with Juliet, which she does.
10. Do Juliet and Donal get married at the end of the book?

Answer: No

Juliet and Donal are engaged, and she goes to Ireland with Donal to meet his family and see their future home. However, their wedding is not for three years as Donal is still at Oxford and then has to train as a barrister, which will mean them moving to London.

In the meantime, Juliet is due to come back as a teacher at the Annexe, along with Grizel Cochrane. Joey is sad about Juliet being so far away once she gets married. Juliet sends Joey a postcard, which Joey shares with her friends while they enjoy a relaxing summer's day at the Sonnalpe after term ends.
