Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most of the books in the series are set on an island. Which one is it?

Answer: Guernsey.

It is believed that Elinor spent a summer holiday in Guernsey in 1923. She was also close friends with a fellow teacher at Western House, who was from Guernsey.
2. In "Gerry Goes to School", why does Gerry leave her existing home to go to school?

Answer: Her great aunts have to go to Madeira.

Gerry has been brought up by her great aunts since she was tiny, and has led a very old fashioned existence. One of her dreams is to go to school and make lots of friends, who will call her 'Gerry' and not 'Geraldine'.
3. In "A Head Girl's Difficulties", who is the Head Girl with the difficulties?

Answer: Rosamund Atherton.

Some of Rosamund's difficulties include the Headmistress being absent due to a train accident, an outbreak of diphtheria, an episode of sentimentality amongst the juniors, a cat siege and a fire which destroys her essay competition entry.
4. In "The Maids of La Rochelle" why do Elizabeth, Anne and Janie Temple move to the island?

Answer: Their father has died, and they have very little money.

Captain Temple's first wife died when Anne was a baby and the second Mrs. Temple died some years later. Their father's death leaves the three girls practically destitute, since he had been unable to save. Fortunately there is a cottage available to rent quite cheaply in Guernsey.
5. In "Seven Scamps" Sancho Panza goes to church. Who is Sancho Panza?

Answer: A donkey.

Sancho Panza is a donkey who was rescued by the Willoughbys five years previously, after he had been maltreated by his owner - a peddler. Peter, David and Britta send the donkey to church to annoy the curate, but they are caught by Sir Piers!
6. In "Heather Leaves School" why does she leave?

Answer: She is going home to be taught by a governess.

Heather's father is not happy with the standards of behaviour and manners which Heather has been acquiring from her school, so he brings her home to be taught with her two sisters, and the vicar's four daughters by a governess. After some months she is much improved and is allowed to go to school in Paris with Janie Lucy and Pauline Ozanne.
7. In "Janie of La Rochelle" where do Janie and Julian spend their honeymoon?

Answer: Sark.

Janie and Julian plan to spend a few days on Sark before going on to Quimper, but change their minds and spend the whole time on Sark, before returning to Guernsey to live in La Rochelle.
8. In "Janie Steps In" who goes to stay with the Lucy family?

Answer: Nan Blakeney

Nan has been staying with her cousin, Rosamund Willoughby (née Atherton) following the death of her mother in a motor accident in Ireland, but she is making herself ill with grieving. A visit to Guernsey is just what she needs to get her on the road to recovery again.
9. Who is the main character throughout the series?

Answer: There is no main character.

Gerry is the heroine of the first book, and gets mentioned in the second and then vanishes until she reappears at the Chalet School! Janie Lucy is important in three of the books and appears in two others, but is not mentioned at all in the first two books. Heather is the heroine of the fifth book, but barely gets a mention after that.
10. Which other set of books written by Elinor M. Brent-Dyer has links to the La Rochelle series?

Answer: The Chalet School series.

The Ozanne, Chester and Lucy families meet the Chalet School when it settles in Guernsey after fleeing from Austria just before the start of the Second World War. Subsequently all their daughters attend the Chalet School.
