Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why is Wilma Sturtz such a nerd?

Answer: Her teacher read an embarrassing essay by her to the class.

At the beginning of the book, not including the prologue, Wilma is a big nerd. Her two best friends moved away the year before, but she is actually a nerd because her teacher read an essay about her to everyone. The essay was about a secret life and she wrote it about her dog, Reggie.
2. Which of the following characters isn't a loner?

Answer: Nina

Nina Draper is not a loner. In fact, she's one of the most popular girls at Claverford. Though she can be sarcastic and mean, she's a good friend in general. Her trademark is giving or taking "points" away from people if she likes or dislikes them, or if they act nerdy or clever in a situation.
3. Who are the three most popular girls in Claverford in the beginning of the book?

Answer: BeeBee, Ardis, and Nina

BeeBee is popular because she is nice to everyone. She's a great artist and everyone likes her. Nina is popular because, as Ardis says, "she doesn't care about being popular". And Ardis is popular because she is nice to everyone. The reason she's so nice is because at her old school she was called "The Mountain", but when she moved she found out that people thought she was pretty and started being nice to everyone.
4. How does Wilma become so popular?

Answer: She wishes she was popular because she sees a witch on the train.

This is the reason the story is called "The Wish". Wilma meets a witch on the bus and helps her on because she doesn't know she's a witch. The witch reveals her identity and says she'll grant Wilma a wish. Without thinking Wilma says she wants to be the most popular person at Claverford because that's what's on her mind at the time.
5. Who does Wilma start dating?

Answer: Jared Fein

Wilma starts dating Jared Fein shortly after she gets popular. She thinks he's a nerd because he has a unibrow but then she realizes she really likes him. He writes her love poems and they get caricatures drawn in the park together. That's when she starts to date him.
6. Who is the only person who doesn't like Wilma now that she's popular?

Answer: Stephanie

Stephanie, who was Ardis, Nina, and BeeBee's old best friend, doesn't like Wilma. It is because after Wilma made the wish, she was only popular at Claverford. Stephanie moved away a long time ago but came back to visit Nina, Ardis, and BeeBee.
7. What does Wilma ask the valedictorian, Daphne, to do for her, and why?

Answer: Put in the speech that they'll always be at Claverford so the wish won't stop

Wilma finds out that the spell is going to end when she graduates from Claverford. So she asks her new friend Daphne to say in her valedictorian speech something about staying Claverfordians forever so the wish won't end. Daphne is more than happy to help because she's friends with Wilma. But unfortunately, the attempt doesn't work.
8. Who is Wilma's best friend?

Answer: Reggie the dog

Wilma is happy that she's popular, but her actual best friend is her dog, Reggie. She reveals to Ardis that she got Reggie after her first dog, Curly, died. She loves her dog and likes to walk and even talk to it. Jared is her boyfriend, Daphne is a nerdy classmate she befriends, and Ardis is the most popular girl in school.
9. Ardis and Russ break up because Russ kissed Wilma in the park when they were getting caricatures drawn together.

Answer: False

Ardis and Russ don't break up. Wilma was kissing her boyfriend, Jared Fein, in the park when they got the caricatures drawn. When Wilma became popular, she got a lot of notes asking her to the dance at the end of the year. While BeeBee and Nina's boyfriends asked her, Russ didn't.
10. What happens to Wilma at the end of the book after the wish ends?

Answer: She meets the witch again but she says she won't grant another wish.

The wish ends, but most of the people forgive her. She realizes that Jared and Daphne liked her all along, and she's glad she can keep them as friends. She also knows that Suzanne never liked her because Suzanne keeps being mean to her, like she did at the beginning of the book.

At the very end, Wilma talks to the witch again on the bus, but the witch says she won't grant more wishes for Wilma. So Wilma tells another kid to help the witch so he'll get a wish granted.
