Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story starts with two sailors talking about Tintin and Captain Haddock's plans to go treasure hunting. Unfortunately they are overheard. What happens the next day?

Answer: Their plans appear in the "Daily Reporter" newspaper

The newspaper report leads to a succession of people arriving at Tintin's door claiming to be Red Rackham's sole descendant and laying claim to the treasure. Captain Haddock scares them off by threatening to fight them.
2. Professor Calculus turns up at Tintin's door shortly after the detectives Thomson and Thompson. What does he offer the treasure hunters?

Answer: A submarine

Calculus' visit is due to his concern that Tintin will be vulnerable to shark attacks when diving to find the ship wreck. He offers his one-man submarine as a solution. Unfortunately it breaks in two when Calculus gets into it.
3. Some days later Tintin manages to buy a diving suit and he arrives on board the Sirius ready to depart. Haddock says he is ill and he is not prepared to sail. Why not?

Answer: He broke a mirror and fears the bad luck

Haddock breaks a mirror in the store where Tintin bought the dive suit. The shopkeeper spooks Haddock and the next day Haddock tells Tintin that he is not prepared to go. He then receives a note from his doctor, Doctor A Leech, banning him from drinking alcohol as a result of the poor condition of his liver.
4. Haddock has changed his mind and they set sail the following morning. Various items start go missing. After searching for clues, Haddock decides to call it a night and get some whisky. What does he find in his whisky crates?

Answer: Bits of metal

Haddock thinks he has discovered a bomb. Shortly afterwards they find Professor Calculus as a stowaway in one of the life rafts. They learn that Calculus replaced the whisky bottles with the submarine, broken down into parts, when the crates were on the quay side.
5. After some days of sailing, they discover the island. On going ashore, they find a statue which Tintin identifies as Sir Francis Haddock. What causes the detectives Thomson and Thompson to think the island is haunted?

Answer: Parrots

When Tintin finds the statute, he imagines out loud what Sir Francis would have said, namely: "Ration my rum". They all hear these words repeated along with other choice phrases, coming from the jungle. It turns out to be parrots imitating the words their ancestors had picked up from Captain Haddock's ancestor.
6. The next day Tintin goes diving to look for the wreck but gets trapped underwater. How is he freed?

Answer: Haddock hooks him with a grapnel

Tintin uses the shark submarine to start the search for the wreck but the propeller gets fouled on seaweed. After a while the others locate him from the surface using an underwater viewing instrument. The grapnel is lowered from the surface and successfully used to break the submarine and Tintin free.
7. Having found the wreck, Tintin goes down in his diving suit to look for the treasure. He loses his air supply after entering the wreck. Why?

Answer: The two detectives take a rest from operating the air pump

Perhaps not appreciating that the pump is supplying air keeping Tintin alive, the detectives Thomson and Thompson take a rest when they get tired from all the pumping. Haddock notices this and soon gets them pumping again.
8. During another dive, Tintin finds a casket which is then swallowed by an attacking shark. How does Tintin disable the shark so that the casket can be recovered?

Answer: He gets the shark drunk

The shark attacks Tintin again and breaks a tooth on his diving helmet. Tintin then finds a rum bottle to use as a weapon but the bottle breaks off at the neck and gets swallowed by the shark. The shark becomes drunk and knocks itself unconscious, allowing Tintin to tie a rope on its tail and get it hauled to the surface.
9. What is in the casket?

Answer: Documents

After Haddock manages to force the lock, they find a few documents. They don't examine these at the time but go back to diving on the wreck in search of the treasure.
10. Where is the treasure eventually found?

Answer: In the cellars at Marlinspike Hall

The treasure is only discovered once they are back in Marlinspike Hall. Tintin realises that the information they were using to find the treasure actually referred to a statue in the cellars. They soon stumble on the jewels in a globe at the base of the statue.
