Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Jack's full name? (Hint: he has a son with this name.)

Answer: John Charles Maynard

Charles, the fifth Maynard child and the second boy in the family, is not named after Jack, but was actually given the name Charles because it is Joey's favourite boys' name. Richard is the name of Joey's father and brother (Dick for short), Kevin is one of Madge's twin sons, and 'Green' was jokingly suggested by Jack as a middle name for Stephen, his firstborn son, when Joey accidentally dyed her hands green.
2. Jack is the brother of Mollie Maynard, the Chalet School's first maths mistress, but he also has an older brother, Bob, who lives in Hampshire. What is the name of Bob's home?

Answer: Pretty Maids

Bob is a captain in the army and the oldest of the Maynard siblings. He is married to Lydia, who Joey does not get on with, and had a son, Rolf, who died in an accident aged thirteen (it is never made clear how he died). Joey, Mollie, Grizel Cochrane and the Robin stay at Pretty Maids in 'Joey's Convict', a standalone story in which Joey mistakes Bob's friend Ralph for a convict. Bob is also friends with Ernest Howell, whose home, Plas Howell, is used by the Chalet School during the Second World War.

After Bob is killed in action, Pretty Maids is left to Jack, but Joey is not keen on living there as she finds the air in the New Forest too relaxing, and it is given to the National Trust instead.
3. In which 'Chalet School' book does Jack first appear, as a trainee doctor at the Sonnalpe Sanatorium?

Answer: The Princess of the Chalet School

Jack is Jem's assistant at the Sanatorium and, like many Chalet School girls over the years, is an Oxford graduate. He and Captain Humphries, Robin's dad and Jem's secretary, both live with the Russells at Die Rosen. The Chalet School girls know him as 'Doctor Jack'.

He takes over at the Sanatorium while Jem looks after Maureen Donovan and Joey after they fall into an icy lake in 'Rivals'. He also escorts a group of girls up the Sonnalpe in 'The Chalet School and Jo' and comes to visit the girls' Guide camp (and nearly gets attacked by hornets!) in 'The Chalet Girls in Camp'.
4. Joey and Jack become friends while the Sanatorium is based in the Tyrol, and their relationship develops into something deeper. In which book are they engaged and then married (albeit offscreen)?

Answer: The Chalet School in Exile

Joey is only thirteen when she meets Jack, and she gets to know him through his connection with Jem, her brother-in-law. Madge and Jem do suspect that Jack has feelings for Joey, but it is made explicit in 'The Chalet School in Exile' when Joey faints after the Robin and Hilary Burn go missing, and are later found to be safe, and Jack brings her round and calls her 'my darling'.

The two later reveal that they are engaged (Jack actually asks Joey to marry him during a picnic, after the school breaks up) and Jack, along with Frieda Mensch's brother Gottfried, protects Joey and the rest of the group who have to go on the run and hide from the Nazis until they can cross the border into Switzerland. Unlike other major characters in the series, Joey and Jack's wedding is never shown in the books; presumably they got married at some point during the timeskip in 'Exile', and Joey also converted to Catholicism during that period, as being different religions would have made it difficult for her and Jack to marry abroad.
5. During the Second World War, Jack joins the Navy as a doctor. In 'The Highland Twins at the Chalet School', Joey receives a telegram saying he has drowned, and has a mental breakdown. However, the news turns out to be a mistake. How does Joey initially find out that Jack is actually alive?

Answer: Fiona McDonald has a vision that Jack is alive and uses her psychic powers to 'see' him.

Jack is initially serving in France, before heading out to Asia on a destroyer. The telegram Joey receives says that Jack has drowned, and Robin, Daisy, the Russells and many others are devastated by the news. Fiona, however, has a feeling that Jack is alive and begs to be allowed to see Joey. Miss Wilson disapproves of Fiona's ability on religious grounds, and Joey is sceptical at first, but had previously been with Fiona when she had a vision of her brother Hugh's boat being lost at sea which turned out to be true. Joey gives Fiona Jack's rosary and Fiona has a vision of him on a boat, with his head bandaged and a bearded man feeding him. Jack is later confirmed to be alive; he had banged his head on an iron bar after being swept overboard and been knocked out, and was picked up by a fishing boat near Mauritius, where the crew had looked after him.
6. Jack comes to stay with Joey and the Quartette at Many Bushes in Yorkshire in 'Jo to the Rescue'. Which future Sanatorium doctor, who is fourteen when the book takes place, does he end up mentoring?

Answer: Reg Entwhistle

Although Frank Peters does appear in 'Rescue' - he is the doctor who treats Phoebe Wychcote, and later marries her - it is Reg, Phoebe's grumpy teenage friend, who Jack takes under his wing while staying at Many Bushes. Reg aspires to become a doctor, but his family cannot afford to pay grammar school fees and his aunt does not believe in education. Jack offers to pay for Reg's schooling and also takes him on a guided tour of a hospital, as well as telling him what it means to be a doctor. Reg reappears later in the series as one of the young doctors at the Swiss Sanatorium, and history repeats itself when he becomes engaged to Len, Jack's oldest daughter.
7. In 'Joey Goes to the Oberland', the Maynards travel across Europe to Switzerland, as Jack has a new job there as Head of the Swiss branch of the Sanatorium. At the beginning of the book, who does Jack give away at her wedding?

Answer: Daisy Venables

Madge and Jem are unable to come to Daisy's wedding to Laurie Rosomon as Madge has measles and is forced to quarantine, so Jack fills in for Jem and gives Daisy away. Robin is also due to fly out to Canada and start her education as a nun. As Primula, Daisy's younger sister, is feeling lonely without Daisy, Joey takes her along on the journey across Europe to help with childcare duties. Primula later moves in with the Rosomons. Jack goes on ahead to Switzerland and meets the party in Basle, where they stay with Frieda and Bruno von Ahlen.

He takes the older children to the Platz the following day and then comes for Joey and the three youngest children a couple of days later. Joey and Jack take a tour of the new house, a former hotel, but have to stay the night at the school as they haven't finished unpacking the furniture yet.
8. In 'Mary-Lou of the Chalet School', who does Jack play at a special Christmas event?

Answer: Saint Nicholas

Jack dresses up as Saint Nicholas and reads out a list of the girls' 'sins', with Miss Annersley as his Recording Angel. He then orders a bunch of younger mistresses, who are dressed as demons, to chase the girls through the school, and the girls have to hide from them. Jack is forced to break character and help search for Mary-Lou Trelawney when she doesn't return, and finds her hiding on top of a wardrobe, much to Miss Annersley's dismay as Mary-Lou could have easily fallen down and injured herself.

When Mary-Lou is injured for real after Emerence Hope accidentally pushes her into a tree and she bangs her head, Jack takes care of her in hospital, and also goes to see Emerence, who is crying herself sick over the accident. He also gives Joey a dose to help her sleep, as she has barely slept over the past few days due to worrying about Mary-Lou.
9. What does Jack buy for the Maynard family, after winning a lottery, in 'A Future Chalet School Girl'?

Answer: A minibus

Jack had been given a lottery ticket by the parents of a girl he had treated at the Sanatorium. They had offered him a gift but he refused, saying he was just doing his job, so they gave him a ticket instead and it turned out to be the winning ticket. Jack puts some of his prize money aside for the children and spends the rest on a lime green minibus, which Joey calls 'Minnie'.

The Maynards and Mélanie Lucas, who is spending the holidays with them, travel to the Tiernsee in Minnie. On the way back, they encounter a dangerous driver and Jack has to swerve into a ditch to avoid a collision, resulting in Minnie being damaged and having to be hauled off for repairs. Minnie makes another reappearance in 'The Chalet School Reunion'.
10. Why does Jack have to sedate the insane Frau Schumacher in 'The Chalet School Triplets'?

Answer: She is strangling Len.

Con and Margot are late coming home from a walk with the younger children after encountering a strange woman who makes a huge fuss over Cecil and delays them considerably. Jack takes the triplets to Interlaken for a day out, but has to leave early when an emergency comes up at work.

When the girls come home, they find Rösli and Anna panicking because Cecil is missing. The triplets figure that Frau Schumacher has something to do with it and track Cecil down to her house with Bruno's help. Frau Schumacher thinks Cecile is Cecilie, her own daughter who died some time ago, and is hostile to Len when Len tries to take her sister home. Bette, Frau Schumacher's maid, goes to the Sanatorium to get help and a group of doctors, including Jack, come to the house.

When they arrive, Frau Schumacher snaps and strangles Len, and Jack has to pull her off Len and inject her with a sedative.
