Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was proclaimed Queen of England and Ireland in 1553, deposed just nine days later and executed six months after being deposed?

Answer: Lady Jane Grey

Rather than name his half sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, as successors to the Crown, Edward VI nominated his cousin Jane in his will as she was Protestant and his eldest half sister, Mary, was Roman Catholic. Lady Jane was therefore proclaimed Queen on 10 July 1553, but after Mary entered London with her supporters, the Privy Council changed sides and Lady Jane was deposed before she was even crowned allowing Mary to become Mary I and reign for five years. Lady Jane was kept in the Tower of London and executed in February 1554 aged 17.
2. How is The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales commonly referred to?

Answer: The Old Bailey

In 1834, the original court from 1585 was renamed the Central Criminal Court, known as the Old Bailey, due to that being the name of the street on which it stands. Although it was originally intended that the court be used for the trials of people accused of crimes committed in the City of London and Middlesex, this changed in 1856 when the Central Criminal Court Act 1856 was passed allowing Dr. William Palmer to be tried here as it was felt he would not receive a fair trial in his native Staffordshire.

He was found guilty of murder and was executed in public by hanging.
3. How do we better know the musician born Steven Demetre Georgiou, who has re-released his hit "Peace Train" under the name Yusuf Islam?

Answer: Cat Stevens

Cat Stevens had four top ten hits in both UK and USA, but since converting to Islam and changing his name has managed only one UK top ten record, although his voice and songwriting abilities as still as good as ever. A favourite track of mine is his cover of The Animals track, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" from the album "An Other Cup" (2006).

As well as pop/folk music, he has released over a dozen albums with Islamic themes.
4. In which Alabama city did Rosa Parks refuse to give up her seat on the bus in 1955?

Answer: Montgomery

Montgomery buses required black passengers to move when there were no white-only seats left, and Parks was arrested for refusing to do so, leading to a bus boycott until all passengers were treated with a level of courtesy and black bus drivers were employed.

This boycott lasted for 381 days, meaning many buses stood idle and cost the company thousands of dollars until the city repealed its law requiring segregation on public buses.
5. Favoured by security services throughout the world, which breed of dog is also known as the Alsatian?

Answer: German Shepherd

German Shepherds are well known for their intelligence, their ability to follow commands and being easy to train, as well as their keen sense of smell. This makes them ideal dogs for police forces, airport security, search and rescue work as well as seeing eye dogs for visually impaired people. Towards the end of WWI, when feelings were running high in many countries, but especially in UK, the breed was referred to as the Alsatian Wolf Dog, later shortened to Alsatian, before gradually reverting back to the proper name of German Shepherd.
6. Who, in 2011, became the most expensive Spanish footballer, when he joined Chelsea from Liverpool for a £50 million transfer fee?

Answer: Fernando Torres

Although all the possible answers have played for both clubs, it was Fernando Torres who set what was at the time a British transfer record. Although he was prolific in front of goal, becoming the fastest player in Liverpool's history to score 50 league goals, he didn't win any silverware there, but that changed once he was in a Chelsea shirt, as the team won the F.A. Cup, UEFA Champions League and the Europa League while he was there.

He left Chelsea in 2014 to join A.C. Milan.
7. What was the name of the love interest of Duchess in the 1970 Disney movie "The Aristocats"?

Answer: Thomas O'Malley

Thomas O'Malley is a feral cat who falls in love with Duchess and helps her raise her three kittens, Toulouse, Marie and Berlioz. The movie contains some great jazz tunes and Maurice Chevalier, perhaps best known for "Thank Heaven For Little Girls", came out of retirement just to sing the title track for the movie.
8. Which American preacher, best known for his hit records "Got To Get You Off My Mind" and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love", died shortly after landing at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in 2010?

Answer: Solomon Burke

At the time of his death, Burke was confined to a wheelchair and weighed between 350 and 400 pounds, and was advised by doctors not to board the flight from Washington to Amsterdam as they suspected he had a pulmonary embolism. "Got To Get You Off My Mind" was his biggest selling single, although thanks its use in "The Blues Brothers" (1980) movie, "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love", may be his best known track.
9. Who left the Williams Formula One team for Red Bull in 2007, with whom he became, in 2012, the first two time Australian winner of the Monaco Grand Prix following his 2010 victory there?

Answer: Mark Webber

Webber raced for Minardi and Jaguar as well as Williams and Red Bull during his F1 career, collecting nine wins in his eleven years. He retired from Formula One in 2014 and began racing for Porsche in the World Endurance Championship, winning the title in 2015 with co-drivers Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley.
10. Who was the drummer in the David Bowie-fronted 80s band Tin Machine?

Answer: Hunt Sales

Tin Machine were active from 1988-1992 and released just two studio albums, neither of which were as successful as hoped. Bowie later said that working in a democracy was a whole new experience for him and changed his way of thinking regarding his future projects.

The full band line up was Bowie on vocals, Hunt Sales on drums, his brother Tony Sales on bass and Reeves Gabrels on lead guitar.
