Westside Connection was a West Coast hip-hop band that was based in Los Angeles, California, U.S. The group formed after Ice Cube and WC united with Mack 10 on his debut album "Westside Slaughterhouse". The band has had feuds with other bands such as Cypress Hill, Common and Q-Tip, with much tension occurring between the East and West sides. Their debut album "Bow Down" reached number two position on the Billboard 200 in 1996 and it also created much teasing and tension on the East Coast. In 2003 their second album called "Terrorist Threats" featured Nate Dogg and reached number 16 on the Billboard 200.

2. The Lost (Internet) Connection... haven't we all experienced the frustration of submitting a timed quiz only to watch our web browser hang on forever? In most cases such a problem is neither at the source (your PC) or at the destination (FunTrivia webserver), but somewhere in the route between the two. Can you estimate how many routing stations the submitted quiz has to cross between my PC in Israel and the FunTrivia server in the USA?

Answer: 20

The network route between my PC and the FunTrivia server has 20 stations (called "routers") on average. The route stretches from my PC to the routers of my Internet Service Provider (ISP), on to the international cables (to London in my case) and the transatlantic cables (London to NY to Dallas to Funtrivia). Thus, the real wonder should be how the vital most of the sessions work perfectly. As I mentioned, most of the times a session is stuck the problem is somewhere in the route so here's a tip - the best way to overcome is to hang up the session (Stop button of your Internet browser) and re-initiate it by re-submitting the quiz. Always works for me, unless the problem is more acute (e.g. FunTrivia server is out of service or my Internet connection has persistent problems).

3. Much of modern life depends on electrical connections, but problems arise when there's a connection between two circuits that are supposed to be separate! Which of these phrases refers to a connection that shouldn't be connected?

Answer: Short circuit

An electrical circuit is a collection of electrical components -- like resistors and capacitors -- connected by something, like metal wire, that is a good conductor of electricity. Current is supposed to flow along certain predetermined paths in a circuit, which is always a closed loop. But when you have a short circuit -- also known as a "short" -- current is able to flow in ways you hadn't anticipated. A short circuit sends electrical energy through something that isn't designed to handle it, and often has bad consequences; many serious electrical fires result from shorts. In fact, this danger is why you should always check to make sure that your electrical cords are in good condition: if the metal wires become exposed through the plastic insulation, they might accidentally become part of a short circuit if they come into contact with something conductive. Not all connections are good things!

The classic 1971 American film noire, "The French Connection" was adapted from a novel by Robin Moore and told the violent, twist-filled story of two New York City narcotics cops who discovered a drug smuggling operation with a "French connection". Director Will Friedkin originally wanted another actor to play Hackman's famous role. Who was tops on the list to play ace cop Popeye Doyle?

The two cops, Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle and Det. Buddy "Cloudy" Russo were played by well-known actors Gene Hackman and Roy Schneider. Friedkin originally wanted Paul Newman to play Popeye Doyle, but the much-sought-after Newman's price was too high. Jackie "The Great One" Gleason was also considered, as was action-hero Steve McQueen. But Gleason didn't pan out, and McQueen wasn't interested in another action flick so soon after the mega-successful "Bullit". So the role went to Hackman, thus solidifying his status as one of Hollywood's best character actors for the next several decades.

5. The word "connection" comes from the Latin word "connectere". The word "connectere" is itself made up of two words - "com" meaning "together or with", and "nectere" meaning "to bind or tie". Which of the following words shares its roots with the Latin word "com"?

Answer: Combat

Combat comes from the Latin "combattere" - "com", "with" (each other), and "battuere", "to beat or fight". Coma is of Greek origin "komatos" meaning "deep sleep". Comedy is of Latin background, but comes from the words "komos" meaning "revel or carousal" and "oidos" meaning "singer or poet". Comrade is from the Spanish "camarada" meaning "chamber mate".
The Latin word "com" is also the root for words such as; compass, commute, commence, commit, common, commotion, community, compact, companion, compel, compete, and many others.

6. Created by college students in 1994, this game invites players to connect two actors, based on other actors whom they have appeared with. For example, connecting Harrison Ford and Elijah Wood can be done through Cate Blanchett (Ford and Blanchett starred together in 'Indiana Jones' and Blanchett and Wood were in 'Lord of the Rings' together). What actor is the game named after?

Answer: Kevin Bacon

Legend has it that the game was inspired by an offhand remark that Bacon made in an interview, when he said something to the effect of between the people he'd worked with and the people they'd worked with, he was connected with everyone in Hollywood. This inspired students Craig Fass, Brian Turtle and Mike Genelli to conceive of the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Starting with Kevin Bacon, you connect him to any other actor of your choosing in six steps or less. This is a great favourite with my movie - loving family, although we have reached the point where we no longer start every chain with Kevin Bacon.

Born in Philadelphia in 1958, Bacon has a long and distinguished acting career, despite his less than classy start in 1978's "Animal House". My personal favourite, from among Bacon's movies, was 1995's "Murder in the First".
Bacon has also released CDs with the band The Bacon Brothers, formed with his brother Michael.

A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and along these fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects." This quote actually derives from a sermon given in 1855 by the prominent English preacher, Henry Melvill, but is often mis-attributed to which famous person?

Answer: Herman Melville

The above quote has been employed, in varying incarnations, by authors, essayists and bloggers alike to champion their views on topics as varied as the prevalence of social networking sites on the internet to the importance of environmentalism. An overwhelming number of sources attribute this quote to Herman Melville, the American novelist responsible for "Moby Dick". Even Hillary Clinton credits Herman Melville as the author of these words in the first chapter of her book "It Takes a Village". Unfortunately, all of them are thinking of the wrong H. Melvill(e). The quote actually has its origins in a sermon given by Henry Melvill in 1855 entitled "Partaking in Other Men's Sins", and was about how a person's actions can "operate on the actions of another" by setting a bad example. Now, over 150 years later, the legacy of this sentiment lives on, while Herman Melville and Henry Melvill remain connected by a case of mistaken identity.

8. For centuries, the only way to get from the mainland to the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island was by ferry. A bridge was opened in 1996 that "connected" PEI to New Brunswick and the rest of Canada. What was its name?

Answer: Confederation Bridge

The idea of a bridge to PEI was first conceived in the 1870s. At eight miles in length, it would have been quite an engineering challenge to construct at the time. For various reasons, the concept was shelved for several decades, was resurrected in the 1950s and finally approved by a plebiscite in 1988. When funding issues were finally resolved, construction began in 1994 and completed four years later. As the home of Canadian confederation because of the Charlottetown Conference on 1864, the name is quite appropriate.

According to Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, a human consciousness is like an island in a chain: it is apparently an individual entity, but beneath the surface it is connected to all other islands. He called this universal psychic link the "collective unconscious" and saw it as the product of experiences inherited from man's earliest ancestors. What did he call the primordial images, objects and themes which form this collective unconscious?

Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1963), originator of Analytical Psychology, took Freud's theories a step further by postulating the existence of two levels in the unconscious mind: the individual unconscious, made of repressed or forgotten personal experiences, and the collective unconscious, a sort of genetic memory, identical in all human beings and formed by archetypes.
Archetypes are "the most ancient, universal and deep thoughts of mankind", typical patterns of action and thought which emerge in our dreams and fantasies and influence our emotional life and behaviour.
Although they are limitless, Jung named four main archetypes: the shadow (the dark part of a human mind, the opposite of every manifest part of the ego); the anima (the feminine part in a man's soul); the animus (the male part in a woman's soul); and the self (the centre of the entire psyche).
Controversial in academic circles, Jungian psychology is often applied to the analysis of myth, literature, music, art and religion.

10. The song "Connection" by the Rolling Stones was written by two group members and is said to be about the endless hours they spent where?

Answer: Airports

While the song is credited to both Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, Richards apparently did the majority of the writing. The lyrics seem to reflect a strong travel theme, with mention of bags receiving "very close inspection", the need for "more injections" and everything going "in the wrong direction". The song was included on the group's 1967 album "Between the Buttons".
