quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When approaching a railroad crossing, traditionally we are taught to do three things: stop, look and ______.

Answer: listen

The message of "stop, look and listen" was often written on old railroad crossing signs. Of course, I have heard people scream at a railroad crossing before!
2. What sitcom from the 1960s featured a train called the Hooterville Cannonball?

Answer: Petticoat Junction

The show, which ran seven seasons from 1963-1970, followed the lives of a family living in a hotel in the farm town of Hooterville, which was on the trainline of the C. F. and W. Although the show took place mostly in the hotel, there were several scenes which focused on the Cannonball.

The show was a spinoff of "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962-1971), and later it spun off into "Green Acres"(1965-1971).
3. Which of the following movies was NOT focused on an out-of-control train?

Answer: Von Ryan's Express

"Von Ryan's Express" (1965) starred Frank Sinatra as an American colonel who helped a group of allied troops escape a prison camp in German-occupied Italy during WWII. They were eventually recaptured and put on a German prisoner train, and later they hijacked the train in order to escape into Switzerland. "Runaway Train"(1985) starred John Voight and Eric Roberts as two escaped convicts who accidentally boarded a train in which the engineer fell off the train when he had a heart attack. "Unstoppable"(2010) starred Denzel Washington as an engineer and Chris Pine as the conductor who were chasing down a runaway train in their single locomotive. "Silver Streak"(1976) was the Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor comedy, in which they ended up on a runaway train that was rolling into Chicago station with no way to stop.
4. Of the choices, which term is the only one NOT used when referring to a tramway?

Answer: light rail

Light rail, or metro rail, refers to passenger trains that operate within the city on a regular rail system. They usually connect the city with its suburbs. The other three are different names for shorter, train-like vehicles that operate on downtown streets with other vehicles.
5. All of the following cities appear in the titles of train songs. Which one doesn't refer to a specific train?

Answer: Clarksville, Tennessee

The Monkees recorded "Last Train To Clarksville" (1967), but it wasn't about a specific train. The song "Chattanooga Choo Choo" (1941) was a number one swing song for Glen Miller's Band about a famous Tennessee train. "Wabash Cannonball" was a folk song about a fictional train recorded by several country artists including Johnny Cash in 1966. "City of New Orleans" (1972) was a folk song recorded by Arlo Gutherie.

It described a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans on an Illinois Central train.

In the lyrics it states: "I'm the train they call the City Of New Orleans", so it was talking about a specific train. Another interesting note about "Chattanooga Choo Choo" is that it hit number one on December 7, 1941...yes, a date that will live in infamy.
6. What country was the first to design a high-speed passenger train which traveled at 360 mph?

Answer: Japan

The Japanese MLX01 train hit speeds of over 300 mph during the 1990s. In 2003, the train reached a speed of 361 mph. The French V-150 nearly hit the mark in 2007 with a speed of 357 mph. The Germans and Chinese have also been successful in designing high speed trains.
7. Which of the following movies took place almost entirely on a train?

Answer: Under Siege 2: Dark Territory

"Under Siege 2"(1995) was the sequel to the Stephen Segal movie "Under Siege" where he reprised his role as retired Navy Seal Casey Ryback. In the sequel, he was going after terrorists who had hijacked a train that he and his daughter were on. "Speed"(1994), which starred Keanu Reeves, was centered on a bomber (Dennis Hopper) who had rigged a city bus to explode if it went under 50 mph. "A Night To Remember"(1958) was one of the earlier movies about the sinking of the Titanic. "Executive Decision"(1996) starred Stephen Segal and Kurt Russell as a commando team who board a plane in mid flight which has been hijacked by terrorists.
8. What was the phrase used to describe the method used by black slaves during the 19th century in order to escape the slave owners?

Answer: Underground Railroad

The "Underground Railroad", which was predominant during pre-Civil War times, utilized a series of secret routes and "safe houses" so the slaves could escape into the free states, aided by abolitionists.
9. What was the name of the movie starring Lee Marvin as a legendary hobo who was the best at hopping rides on freight trains?

Answer: Emperor of the North Pole

"Emperor of the North Pole"(1973) also starred Ernest Borgnine and Keith Carridine. Marvin's character, whose reputation was well known, was given the nickname A-No. 1. Borgnine was the brash conductor of a train who despised hobos and would do anything to keep them from boarding his train. Marvin made a bet that he could ride Borgnine's train all the way to Portland. By doing so, he would receive the title "Emperor of the North Pole".
10. The first railroad train ran on a steam engine locomotive. The steam was generated by putting flammable materials into a "firebox", which would turn the water into steam. Which of the following combustible materials was NOT used in the "firebox"?

Answer: kerosene

Although kerosene wasn't used, an alternative source of fuel which was readily available was crude oil. The other three were predominantly used in the early steam locomotives.
