Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a global sport event, the runner up (a polite way of saying "LOSER") is often a silver medal. In competitions held at county and state fairs in the United States, a colored ribbon traditionally identifies the final ranking. What is the color associated with second place?

Answer: red

The total ranking of ribbon colors is:
1st place Blue
2nd place Red
3rd place white
4th place yellow
5th place green
6th place orange
7th place purple
8th place brown
2. In a casino or online Texas Hold'em poker game the first player to the left of the dealer is forced to post a bet. The second player is also forced to place a bet which is normally twice the value of the first bet. What is this second forced bet called?

Answer: Big blind

You will normally be playing with eight or nine other players. Since all games have a house dealer, a button (a small round puck) is used to determine which player will be representing the dealer. This button is passed from one player to the next, rotating clockwise.

After the deal, the player directly left from the button has to place the first bet called "small blind". The second bet is the "big blind". This big blind is equal to one small bet which is determined per table, and the small blind is typically one-half the big blind. So the first two players have to place a bet without the option to fold, no matter how bad their cards are.

They do not even have to look at the cards, hence "blind".
3. Who was the second person to pilot solo and non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean after Lindbergh did that on May 21, 1927?

Answer: Clarence Duncan Chamberlin

A total of 81 people had flown across the Atlantic prior to Lindbergh. John Alcock was one of the non-stop pilots but he had a co-pilot (Arthur Whitten Brown). Albert Read was the commander of the first transatlantic flight in 1919 with stops.

Clarence Duncan Chamberlin was the second solo pilot to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, and he even was the first to carry a passenger. His trip was two weeks after Lindbergh's. Charles was too busy receiving medals and awards to fly back again.
4. The Bill of Rights comprises the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Those amendments all relate to limiting the power of the federal government in the USA. The first and the fifth amendment are well known, but what is stated in the second amendment?

Answer: It declares "a well regulated militia" as "necessary to the security of a free State", and as explanation for prohibiting infringement of the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

The private home protection is mentioned is the third amendment, the illegal searches in the fourth and the excessive punishments are prohibited in the eighth.
5. What is the title of the second released album of The Rolling Stones, according to the UK listing of studio albums?

Answer: The Rolling Stones No. 2

"12 x 5" is the second album in the US, so half a point for that, but in the UK the second album was simply called "The Rolling Stones No. 2". Most numbers of this album are on the third US album "The Rolling Stones, Now!" What a mess. "The Second Stones Album" does not exist (as a title that is).
6. Which country never won but came in second three times (1974, 1978, and 2010) at the world championship soccer, losing to West-Germany, Argentina, and Spain?

Answer: The Netherlands

Losing these finals is a big issue in The Netherlands. The 1970s were the best Dutch soccer years with star player Johan Cruijff. In 1978 the ball on the goalpost, only seconds before the end of the regular playing time, is the biggest "what if" in Dutch soccer history. The Dutch lost 3 -1 in the extra time. The Argentine victory is surrounded with many controversies about unfair play, stalling tactics, bribery of the Peruvian goalkeeper and a few more. Johan Cruijff refused to play that tournament because of the coup that took place in Argentina.
7. What is the name of the second largest satellite (moon) of Saturn?

Answer: Rhea

Rhea (diameter 1530 km) is composed mostly of water ice, but has a small rocky core. Rhea's rotation and orbit are locked together (just like Earth's Moon) so that one side always faces Saturn.

Titan is best known Saturn satellite with his 5150 km diameter, which is considerably larger than our moon with its 3476 kilometer. Dione (1120 kilometer) is the third largest Saturn satellite. Triton is a satellite of Neptune.
8. What is the second highest mountain of the second largest continent?

Answer: Mount Kenya

K2 is world's second highest mountain (8611 meter), but is located in Pakistan-China, which is on the largest continent Asia.
Monte Rosa is the second highest mountain in Europe, which is also not the second largest continent.

The second largest continent is Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest (5895 meter) there. Mount Kenya is the second highest with 5199 meter. Mount Kenya was also the second of the three highest peaks in Africa to be discovered by Europeans, but that is too trivial.
9. What is the second largest ocean of the world?

Answer: Atlantic Ocean

Pacific Ocean - 169.2 million square kilometers
Atlantic Ocean - 106.4 million square kilometers
Indian Ocean - 73.6 million square kilometers
Southern Ocean - 20.3 million square kilometers
Arctic Ocean - 14 million square kilometers
10. Which one of these animals is the second largest fish?

Answer: Basking Shark

Whales are mammals so the Blue Whale does not count. The Whale Shark does, but that is the largest of this order. According to amongst others the site of 'extremescience', the Manta Ray comes in third with 3.3 tons which is far smaller than the 17.6 tons of the Basking Shark.

If you would include prehistoric fish the number one would have been Leedsichthys problematicus. At 22 meters (72 feet), it was almost twice as long as the whale shark is now. Leedsichthys problematicus swam the world's oceans some 155 million years ago. (National Geographic)
