Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ANIMALS DRAGON QUESTION: The Komodo dragon, the world's largest lizard, lives where?

Answer: Indonesia

The dragon can be found on the islands Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang, all of which are in Indonesia. The creatures are scavengers, but they will attack, kill and eat anything they can catch--and they've been known to dig up human corpses and consume them as well.

The lizard has a septic bite (though debate rages as to whether this is some kind of venom or just basic filthiness).
2. BRAIN TEASER DRAGON QUESTION: If a red dragon weighs three tons, a purple dragon weighs six tons and a gold dragon weighs four tons, how much does a blue dragon weigh?

Answer: Four tons

Each dragon weighs an amount of tons equal to the number of letters in its color. Thus, a B-L-U-E dragon would weigh four tons.
3. CELEBRITIES DRAGON QUESTION: Which Scottish knight and "People" magazine's Sexiest Man of the Twentieth Century provided the voice of Draco, the last dragon, in 1996's "Dragonheart"?

Answer: Sean Connery

Connery is best-known for playing James Bond, but he won an Oscar for his supporting role in "The Untouchables". He was once recruited by the manager of the Manchester United football team, but turned down the offer. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.
4. ENTERTAINMENT DRAGON QUESTION: In which comic strip, created by Brant Parker and Johnny Hart, might you find Sir Rodney facing off against (or more likely, running from) a fire-breathing dragon?

Answer: The Wizard of Id

"The Wizard of Id" has a very large cast of characters. In addition to Sir Rodney (the cowardly knight), there's the title Wizard, the King, Spook (the eternal prisoner in the dungeons), Robbing Hood and the Lone Haranguer and so on. The strip was named Best Humor Strip five times by the National Cartoonists Society, and its two creators received Reuben Awards for their work. Parker and Hart died in 2007.
5. FOR CHILDREN DRAGON QUESTION: Which dragon lives in Honalee?

Answer: Puff

"Puff the Magic Dragon" was recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1963, and has since been recorded by dozens of musicians (including Dolly Parton, Roger Whittaker, John Denver and Bing Crosby). An animated television version (with Burgess Meredith voicing that rascal Puff) appeared in 1978.
6. GENERAL DRAGON QUESTION: In which organization, founded after the American Civil War, would you find officers with names like "Grand Dragon"?

Answer: The Ku Klux Klan

The Klan was founded to further the rights of white Americans through such methods as intimidation, torture and murder of non-whites, including Jews, African-Americans and (yes, I know they were white) Roman Catholics. They came up with names like 'Wizard' and 'Dragon' for their officers, and 'Kleagle' and 'Klavern' for recruiters and local organizations respectively.
7. GEOGRAPHY DRAGON QUESTION: According to Christian mythology (and probably earlier), St. George slew a dragon. He's the patron saint of England, but his dragon-slaying was supposedly done in a place called "Silene" in which modern-day country? (Hint: its capital is now Tripoli)

Answer: Libya

The "Legenda Sanctorum", or "Golden Legend" (a collection of lore about the various saints), was published around 1260, and placed George's mighty feat in Libya, though Silene (if it ever existed) is long gone. Perhaps it corresponds to modern Cyrene. In any case, the Crusaders brought the story home from their sojourn in the East.
8. HISTORY DRAGON QUESTION: The seat of power of which country was referred to as "The Dragon Throne"?

Answer: China

When China was an empire, the Emperor used the dragon as a symbol on the flag, on his robes, and in various other ways, including the actual seat he sat on in the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City.
9. HOBBIES DRAGON QUESTION: Who created the role-playing game "Dungeons & Dragons"?

Answer: Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson

"Dungeons & Dragons" had its roots in a series of rules for a miniatures war-game, and Gygax expanded those rules to include fantasy elements. Arneson eventually modified them so that players controlled single characters rather than armies, and in 1974 TSR published the game rules as D&D. It is generally considered to be the first modern role-playing game.
10. HUMANITIES DRAGON QUESTION: Antirrhinum, a family of perennial plants you may have in your garden (if you live in sunny areas), has a more common name. What is it known as?

Answer: Snapdragon

The snapdragon's flower looks like the face of a dragon, and when you squeeze it, it opens and closes its 'mouth'. Snapdragons typically grow to 18-24 inches tall, though taller varieties have been developed. They also come in many bright colors.
11. LITERATURE DRAGON QUESTION: Which author created the planet Pern, and the genetically-engineered dragons who help the humans fight off the extraplanetary threat of the Thread?

Answer: Anne McCaffrey

The Pern dragons were created from much smaller lizards in order that the human colonists could ride them, in order to burn (with the dragons' fiery breath) the alien organisms that every so often descended on the planet and caused death and destruction.

The series of books began in 1968 (with "Dragonflight") and by 2006 there were 18 novels or novellas and multiple short stories detailing the adventures of the dragons and their riders.
12. MOVIES DRAGON QUESTION: What 1981 film starred Peter MacNicol as a young man named Galen Bradwarden, who had to face the fierce dragon Vermithrax Pejorative?

Answer: Dragonslayer

"Dragonslayer" also starred Caitlin Clarke as Valerian and Ian McDiarmid (later to be better known as Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars films) as Brother Jacopus. The movie was nominated for an Academy Award in Visual Effects, but lost to "Raiders of the Lost Ark". It was filmed in Wales.
13. MUSIC DRAGON QUESTION: Daryl Dragon, a keyboard player with the Beach Boys in the early 1970's, later formed a musical act with his future wife. What were they called?

Answer: Captain & Tennille

Dragon got his nickname "Captain" from Mike Love of the Beach Boys, and he was known for wearing a ship captain's cap. The duo performed such hits as "Do That To Me One More Time", "The Way I Want to Touch You", and, of course, "Muskrat Love". The pair also hosted their own variety show on ABC in 1976.
14. PEOPLE DRAGON QUESTION: Which British admiral did the Spaniards (whose armada he helped defeat in 1588) call "The Dragon"?

Answer: Sir Francis Drake

Drake (whose last name in Latin is 'Draco', or 'dragon') was a privateer, a treasure-seeker, an explorer (he circumnavigated the globe), a politician (he served in Parliament), a slaver and a Vice Admiral. When he died in 1596 (of dysentery) his body was dressed in his full armor, put into a lead coffin and buried at sea off the coast of Panama.
15. RELIGION DRAGON QUESTION: "Heavenly Dragon Temple", "Dragon Swamp Temple" and "Dragon Peace Temple" are three of the temples dedicated to which Eastern religion?

Answer: Buddhism

The first and third of the named temples are in Kyoto, and the second in Mishima. Shinto also reveres dragons (Ryûjin shinkô, in particular, worships dragons as water spirits), but the named temples are definitely Buddhist. Dragons appear in so many world religions (including Christianity, in which Satan sometimes gets described as one) that you start to wonder about the common ancestor of all these myths.
16. SCI/TECH DRAGON QUESTION: The Cat's Eye Nebula (NGC 6543) and the stars Thuban and Eltanin are major features of this constellation. What's it called?

Answer: Draco

All of these constellations have SOMETHING to do with dragons (Cetus is a sea monster, Hydra is a mythological snake-headed creature and Ophiuchus means 'serpent-bearer'), but only one of them means 'dragon'.

Hey, you needed ONE easy-as-pie question, right?
17. SPORTS DRAGON QUESTION: What American university in Philadelphia uses 'Dragons' as its sports mascot?

Answer: Drexel

The Drexel Dragons compete in the Colonial Athletic Association (against such teams as Hofstra, Northeastern and Delaware). Malik Rose, a basketball player who made the NBA, is perhaps their most famous athlete. In 2009, the women's rugby team won the Division IV championship.
18. TELEVISION DRAGON QUESTION: On television's "The Munsters", what was the name of the family pet dragon?

Answer: Spot

Spot lived under the stairs and had glowing eyes. He often breathed fire, and we occasionally saw his tail. The Munsters also had a bat named Igor (Grandpa's pet), a raven who lived in the cuckoo clock, and a cat named Kitty that had a lion's roar.
19. VIDEO GAMES DRAGON QUESTION: In the American release of the 1987 Taito Corporation arcade game "Double Dragon", what were the names of the two protagonists?

Answer: Billy and Jimmy Lee

In 1994, Gramercy Pictures released a live-action film of the video game starring Mark Dacascos as martial artist Jimmy Lee and Scott Wolf as his brother Billy. The movie also starred a young Alyssa Milano. There was an animated television series based on the game, too, that ran from '93 to '95.
20. WORLD DRAGON QUESTION: In 2010, which of these countries had dragons on their national flags?

Answer: Bhutan and Wales

The Welsh flag is a red dragon passant on a green and white field, and the Bhutan is a white dragon on a yellow and orange background. China used to have a dragon on its flag, but that ended in 1912 when the Republic of China took over from the Manchu (or Qing) Dynasty. As for Barbados--they have a trident's head centered in a field of ultramarine and gold.

EDIT: I'm informed by player Cymruambyth that the red dragon on the Welsh flag is called "Y Ddraig Goch" in Welsh. Thanks, and thanks to MaggieG for fixing my spelling!
