1. Butterfly with black wings, red bands and white spots

Answer: Admiral

The red admiral (Vanessa Atalanta) is known for its vibrant combination of colours. It is found across most of the Northern Hemisphere in North America, Europe and Asia.

It is a migratory butterfly that migrates north in the spring and south in autumn. Usually found in moist woodland areas they are very territorial and females will only mate males that have their own territory.

The caterpillars primarily feed on nettles and the adult butterfly drinks from flowering nectar filled plants and overripe fruit.
2. Painter and poet, Robert De Niro's mother

Virginia Admiral (1915 - 2000) was an American abstract expressionist painter and poet. Her work often exhibited a dynamic interplay of colours, shapes and emotions reflecting the abstract expressionist movement's principles. Her paintings are characterized by their bold use of colour and energetic brushstrokes which are both innovative and emotive.

Beyond her contributions to the art world, she was also recognized as the mother of actor Robert De Niro.
3. Zimbabwean professional footballer

Admiral Dalindlela Muskwe was born in Zimbabwe in 1998 and emigrated to the UK when he was 3. He was signed up to his local team, Leicester City, when he was just 9 years old.

At 18 he signed his first 3-year professional contract with the club. He was then on loan to other clubs throughout 2020 and 2021 and then signed up to Luton Town for an undisclosed fee in July 2021.

Muskwe represented the England national team at the under 17 level and has also represented Zimbabwe in an international game.
4. Pink cockatoo with bright red and yellow crest

Also known as the pink cockatoo and the Leadbeater's cockatoo, the Major Mitchell is a medium-sized cockatoo that is native to Australia. They inhabit arid and semi-arid regions, favouring open woodlands and scrublands, where there are conifers and eucalyptus trees.

It is known for its flamboyant colouring. Its general overall colour is white but it has a salmon pink plumage on its chest and its crest has bands of orange and yellow.

They are social birds that often live in pairs or flocks and are very intelligent. Skilled at mimicry, they are popular pets but are best for experienced bird owners as they bond closely with their owner and require daily interactions.
5. Mr Jones' prize boar, who represents Karl Marx

Old Major is a fictional character in George Orwell's allegorical novel "Animal Farm." He is a wise and venerable boar who serves as the catalyst for the animals' rebellion against their human oppressors.

Old Major delivers a passionate speech to the animals on Manor Farm urging them to recognize the exploitation they endure under human rule and to envision a future of equality and freedom. His vision inspires the animals to rise up against their human farmer and establish a society where all animals are equal.

While Old Major himself does not live to see the fruition of the rebellion, his ideas become the foundation for Animalism, the philosophy that shapes the animals' new society.
6. One of David Bowie's personas from 'Space Oddity'

Major Tom is a fictional astronaut character from the music of David Bowie. He first appeared in Bowie's 1969 song "Space Oddity" where Major Tom is an astronaut who loses communication with Ground Control and becomes stranded in space.

In 1980, Bowie revisited Major Tom but reinterprets him as an autobiographical symbol for himself. "Ashes to Ashes" and "Hallo Spaceboy" are included in this persona and Tom's life mirrors his own.

Two days before his death in 2016, he released a song and album labelled "Blackstar". A dead astronaut with a jewel-encrusted skull is shown in the music video, which is then worshipped by a cult-like entity. It is presumed that this is Major Tom.
7. Famous for his recipe with herb and spices

Harland David Sanders, known as Colonel Sanders, is the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, one of the largest chicken fast food restaurants in the world.

Sanders was born in 1890 and started selling his special brand of chicken with its unique blend of 11 herbs and spices from a roadside restaurant during the Great Depression. He travelled throughout the USA promoting his recipe and his chicken franchise and has remained the face behind the brand despite his death in 1980.

The franchise, now known as KFC, continues as a global phenomenon.
8. Old English sheepdog in '101 Dalmatians'

The Colonel is an Old English sheepdog who lives on a farm in the English countryside with his two companions Captain, a horse, and Sergeant Tibbs, a tabby cat.

They hear about the puppies abduction through the dog grapevine and Tibbs mentions hearing puppies barking at Hell Hall, the home of Cruella de Vil, so he and the Colonel send a message back to Pongo and Perdita and then go and investigate.

They find 99 puppies there, not just the expected 15, and they both play an active role in helping to rescue them.
9. British march that is often whistled

The "Colonel Bogey March" is a well-known military march composed by Lieutenant F. J. Ricketts under the pseudonym Kenneth J. Alford in 1914. Rickets was a British Army Bandmaster and named the tune after a fictional golfer called Colonel Bogey.

Bogey was who golfers considered as a 'standard opponent' that they could asses their play against. Over time it became known more as the presiding spirit of the particular course and is now a golfing term meaning one over par.

The march found its way into popular culture - particularly the whistling section. It was included in the 1957 film "The Bridge on the River Kwai" where it was whistled by characters in the movie.
10. Walt Whitman poem about Abraham Lincoln

"O Captain! My Captain!" is a famous poem written by American poet Walt Whitman. It was written as an elegy to honour Abraham Lincoln after his assassination in 1865. The title of the poem refers to the way in which the poet addresses the fallen leader.

The poem is both a personal expression of grief and a symbolic representation of the nation's mourning for Lincoln. The captain in the poem is a metaphor for Lincoln and the lines vividly depict the sense of loss and the deep mourning felt by the poet.

The phrase "O Captain! My Captain!" gained further popularity when it was used in the movie "Dead Poets Society" where it becomes a rallying cry for students expressing their admiration and farewell to their departing teacher.
11. People buy heroin from this Billy Joel character

Billy wrote "Captain Jack" in 1973. According to his interviews, he wrote the song while looking out of his window in Long Island trying to find some inspiration. It was the name of the local drug dealer that lived in the housing estate across the street and he watched all the college kids coming to buy from him.

The song addresses the issues of drug addiction amongst the suburban youth and the escapism that they all sought from their lives.
12. Marsupial name within a children's television series

"Captain Kangaroo" was a long running American children's television program that aired from 1955 to 1984. It was created and hosted by Bob Keeshan who played the central character Captain Kangaroo. He wore a distinctive red jacket with oversized pockets, which is where his name came from.

The show featured a mix of humour, storytelling, cartoons, puppetry and educational segments with him and his friends.

Keeshan also played the characters of Mr. Pennywhistle, Mr. Doodle, Wally and the Town Clown. Other main characters included Mr. Green Jeans, Bunny Rabbit, Mr. Moose and many others.
13. American expatriate portrait artist

John Singer Sargent was born in 1856 in Florence, Italy, to American parents. He trained in Paris before moving to London and spent most of his life travelling throughout Europe.

Sargent's works include portraits of prominent figures from high society as well as scenes from everyday life. He was known for his mastery of portrait painting and his ability to capture the personalities of his subjects.

Between his portraits and landscapes, he created approximately 900 oil paintings, more than 2000 watercolours and countless charcoal drawings and sketches.
14. Played Samantha's mortal husband

Dick Sargent was an American actor best known for his role as the second Darrin Stephens on the popular television series "Bewitched." He took over the role from Dick York starting in the sixth season of the show and continued until its eighth and final season.

He was also a major advocate for gay rights after coming out in 1991, becoming one of the first openly gay actors in Hollywood.
15. Band for the Lonely Hearts Club
