Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the snake that is a character in Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book" series and the later animated movies featuring the same characters?

Answer: Kaa

In 1893, Rudyard Kipling wrote a short story called "In the Rukh" which introduced us to a boy called Mowgli. In 1894, Rudyard Kipling wrote his first "The Jungle Book" in which Kaa, an Indian python, tried to help Bagheera (a leopard) and Baloo (a bear) save Mowgli from the Bandar-log (monkeys).

In the 1967 first Disney animation "The Jungle Book", Kaa was portrayed as a bad snake who was against Mowgli. Nagaina was a cobra in the Kipling short story "Nag and Nagaina". Hathi was an Indian elephant in "The Jungle Book".
2. What is the name of the snake glove puppet in "The Sooty Show", which first appeared whilst Harry Corbett was the puppet operator?

Answer: Ramsbottom

Harry Corbett, from Bradford in Yorkshire, was a part-time magician who used a glove puppet bear originally called Teddy, later called Sooty, to improve his act. Sooty first appeared with Harry on "Talent Night" on British television in 1952. "The Sooty Show" series started in 1955 and later brought us the characters Sweep (a dog), Kipper (a cat), Butch (another dog), Soo (a panda), 'Enry (a robot), Cousin Scampi (a bear) and Ramsbottom (a snake). Ramsbottom spoke in a broad Yorkshire accent and he would often appear during a commotion caused by Sweep and say, "Eee by gum. What's goin' on 'ere then?"
3. Michael Jackson had a large pet collection. What was the well-known name of the last snake that he kept as a pet (in the late 1980s)?

Answer: Muscles

Michael Jackson's pet snake in the late '80s was a boa constrictor called Muscles. His first pet snake in the 1970s was called Crusher. It was used as a character in the cartoon series "The Jackson 5ive" where it was called Rosie the Crusher. Other notable pets of Michael's were Bubbles (chimpanzee), Rikki (parrot), Louie (llama), Ben (rat), Jabbar (giraffe), Spanky (dog) and Mr Tibbs (ram).
4. Which rock musician used his cousin "The Mascara Snake" to illustrate one of his albums and to play the bass clarinet as well as to speak about being "Fast and bulbous" on another earlier album called "Trout Mask Replica"?

Answer: Captain Beefheart

The Mascara Snake played bass clarinet on at least one track on Captain Beefheart's album "Trout Mask Replica". He was not really a noted musician, but he was in the conversation about being "fast and bulbous" at the start of the track called "Pena".

His skill was mainly in doing illustrations such as that on the cover of the album "Bluejeans and Moonbeams". The Mascara Snake's real name is Victor Hayden; Captain Beefheart's real name is Don Van Vliet.
5. Which of these wrestlers was named "The Snake" as part of his ring persona and also owned a pet python called "Damien"?

Answer: Jake Roberts

Jake "The Snake" Roberts was known mainly for his wrestling career with the WWF from 1986 to 1992, then from 1996 to '97. He accidentally invented a dangerous facelock maneuver called DDT. His other wrestling opponents at this time included Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, Randy "Macho Man" Savage and "Ravishing" Rick Rude.
6. Which cartoon and animated movie hero fought against the Snake Men, including their leader King Hiss?

Answer: He-Man

He-Man and The Masters of the Universe were cartoon superheroes who fought mainly against the evil Skeletor for control of Eternia. Prince Adam of Eternia would use his magic sword to transform himself into He-Man. He-Man's enemies also included the Snake Men who were evil humanoid snakes, such as King Hiss, Kobra Khan and Rattlor.

In 1987, a movie was made called "Masters of the Universe", with Dolph Lundgren starring as He-Man.
7. In the Chinese horoscope with 12 year cycles, if 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989 and 2001 were all "Year of the Snake", which of these celebrities, who could also be called Domino, was born as a "snake"?

Answer: Kim Basinger

Kim Basinger, who played the part of Domino in "Never Say Never Again", (born in December 1953) is a "snake"; Meryl Streep (born in June 1949) is an "ox"; Jodie Foster (born in November 1962) is a "tiger"; Cindy Crawford (born in February 1966) is a "horse".

The Chinese New Year is based on the cycles of the moon, so although the years are similar to the western year, the date of New Year changes each year. The Chinese New Year can start any time from late January to the middle of February.
8. Which Egyptian queen was said to have used a snake bite to commit suicide?

Answer: Cleopatra VII

Cleopatra and Antony were defeated by Octavian, of the Roman Republic, at the battle of Actium in 31 BC. Soon afterward, Octavian was re-named Augustus and the republic became the Roman Empire. Cleopatra chose to commit suicide rather than be captured.

She is said to have used the bite of an asp to inject poison into her body. It is not known exactly which species this asp would have been. The Egyptian Cobra (naja haje) is a large snake and death from its bite would be slow and painful. Horned viper (cerastes cerastes) doesn't have strong venom.

Other Egyptian venomous snakes include Spitting cobra, Saw scaled viper, Burton's carpet viper and Egyptian black snake.
9. What is the name of the rock band that was formed by the musician David Coverdale in 1977?

Answer: Whitesnake

Vocalist and musician David Coverdale played with Deep Purple for three years until the band broke up in 1976. After playing for about a year as a solo artist, he formed the band Whitesnake in 1977. Whitesnake has disbanded and re-formed many times in its history. Whitesnake was named after David Coverdale's pet snake from his time with Deep Purple, a white albino ball python.

Cobra is an all-female rock band from China, formed in 1989. Cobra Starship is an alternative pop punk band, formed in 2006, famous for its single "Snakes on a Plane". Black Snake Moan is an industrial rock band formed in 1997.
10. Which is the longest snake in the world?

Answer: Reticulated python

Reticulated Python has been known to grow to over 28 feet long; Green Anaconda up to 18.1 feet; King Cobra up to 18.5 feet; Boa Constrictor up to 12 feet. It is difficult to answer the question, "which is the largest snake?" because Green Anaconda is the heaviest snake.

A horror movie called "Anaconda" starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight and Eric Stoltz was made in 1997, followed by two sequels. I haven't seen any of them, but they appear to be unrealistic.
