Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Founded in 1917 as the Philadelphia Sphas, which basketball team was sold to Red Klotz in 1950, and under a new name went on to tour with - and play against - the Harlem Globetrotters?

Answer: Washington Generals

The Washington Generals played under several different names, to give the illusion of actually being different teams. They would rotate between being the Washington Generals, New Jersey Reds, Boston Shamrocks, Atlantic City Seagulls and Baltimore Rockets. Between 1953 and 1995, they toured with the Harlem Globetrotters as their opponents, and played as a foil to the Globetrotters' athletic and comedic feats. During those years, the Generals won 6 games, and lost over 13,000.

In 1995 Klotz did away with the Generals, and created a new team - the New York Nationals, who were in fact the former Generals.

They continued their incredible losing streak until 2007, when they once again became the Washington Generals.
2. The U.S. sitcom "Hogan's Heroes" had two main characters, Robert Hogan and Wilhelm Klink, who both held which military title?

Answer: colonel

Colonel Hogan, played by Bob Crane, was an officer in the United States Army Air Corps (which became the United States Army Air Forces). Colonel Klink, played by Werner Klemperer, was in charge of the German POW camp Stalag 13. Set during World War II, the show featured a group of Allied prisoners who conducted special operations right under the noses of their German guards.

The series ran from 1965 - 1971, and was nominated three times for Emmy Awards.
3. In "Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi" (1983), Han Solo accepts a commission to what rank in the Rebel Alliance?

Answer: general

With a background that is more mercenary than noble, Han Solo becomes a reluctant hero, who grows to value his friends more than any monetary reward. Beginning with 1977's "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope", Han Solo, the captain of the Millenium Falcon, and his Wookie first mate Chewbacca, get drawn into the world of the Freedom Fighters with the possibility of a substantial reward. Solo's feelings of compassion, commitment and concern gradually overwhelm his natural tendency to be selfish, sarcastic and reckless.

As his character evolves, his importance in the Rebel Alliance grows, and his commitment and capabilities earn him the rank of General.
4. Derek Jeter, a New York Yankees shortstop, has two nicknames. One is 'Mr. November', but what is his other nickname?

Answer: Captain Clutch

Derek Jeter was drafted by the Yankees in 1992, and spent four seasons in the minors before making his first Major League appearance in 1995. He holds several team records, including the number of games played, at bats and stolen bases. He has won numerous awards, including the Babe Ruth Award in 2000 and the Roberto Clemente Award in 2009.

His nicknames are due to his postseason performances - which include five World Series Championships.
5. Colonel Denning State Park is located in Cumberland County, in which Northeastern state of the USA?

Answer: Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania, the Keystone State, has numerous state parks, including the Susquehannock State Park, Hickory Run State Park, Caledonia State Park and Lehigh Gorge State Park. The Colonel Denning State Park is located within the boundaries of the Tuscarora State Forest, in the south-central region of the state. The park is named after William Denning, an American Revolutionary War figure - who was a sergeant, not a colonel.
6. The popular breakfast cereal, Cap'n Crunch, is manufactured by General Mills.

Answer: false

Cap'n Crunch is manufactured by the Quaker Oats Company. The cereal debuted in 1963, as did the television advertisements which featured the Cap'n (whose complete name is Horatio Magellan Crunch) and a crew of four children on The Good Ship Guppy. Quaker Oats makes several variations of the original cereal, including Cap'n Crunch's Crunch Berries, Choco Crunch and Peanut Butter Crunch.
7. On the U.S. soap opera, "General Hospital" whose 1981 wedding earned the show excellent ratings, and critical censure?

Answer: Luke and Laura

On "General Hospital", the character Laura was introduced in an attempt to perk up declining ratings. With her troubled past, attitude problems, issues with sex and romance, the change worked, culminating in the wedding that drew soap opera's largest audience to that date - 30 million viewers.

The critics at first disapproved of the marriage storyline on the basis that Laura was marrying her rapist, but when future storylines explored regret, redemption, hope and love, their criticism was allayed to a certain extent. "General Hospital", which was created by Frank and Doris Hursley, premiered in 1963, and is one of the longest running soap operas worldwide.
8. On the children's television show "Captain Kangaroo", Mister Rogers once made a guest appearance.

Answer: true

The series "Captain Kangaroo" ran for 38 seasons, from 1955 - 1984. Starring Bob Keeshan, Hugh Brannum and Bill McCutcheon, the show also included Bill Cosby and Dr. Joyce Brothers as regulars. Mister Rogers appeared on one episode in 1975, where he and the Captain attempted to repair a gramophone.

The show had a number of notable guest stars, including Dolly Parton, the Smothers Brothers and Carol Channing.
9. Which swashbuckling actor played the title character in 1935's "Captain Blood"?

Answer: Errol Flynn

Errol Flynn was born in Australia, but later became a naturalized American citizen. His first forays into acting occurred in the early 1930s in the UK. His first starring role in Hollywood was as Captain Blood, and it catapulted him into stardom. Following that success, he made a number of movies which cemented his status, including 1938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood".

Unfortunately, his fame and fortune enabled him to live an indulgent and reckless playboy lifestyle, which eventually caught up to him.

He died in 1959 at the relatively young age of 50.
10. In the USA only two men have achieved the rank of General of the Armies. One is George Washington. Who is the other?

Answer: General John J. Pershing

General of the Armies is the highest rank possible in the United States Army. General Pershing achieved that rank in 1919 for his performance during World War I. He is the only officer to have received that honor during his own lifetime. George Washington was named General of the Armies (with higher seniority) in 1976. The second-highest rank, that of General of the Army, has been achieved by just five officers. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, Douglas MacArthur, George Marshall and Henry H. Arnold.

Henry H. Arnold also held the rank of General of the Air Force, and is the only officer to hold that rank in the Air Force, and the only officer to hold a five-star rank in two separate branches of the military.
