Answer: Louis de France

Although he was prepped and groomed to take over one day, Louis de France, known as "Le Grand Dauphin" or "Monseigneur", died before his father, King Louis XIV, and so Louis de France never inherited the throne. He was the eldest son of Louis XIV, born in 1661, and dying in 1711. He did in his lifetime hold political office and various military posts as well.

"Die Finanzen des Großherzogs", or as titled in America, "Finances of the Grand Duke" aka "The Grand Duke's Finances" was directed by the German film pioneer, F. W. Murnau. The storyline involves the financially strapped Grand Duke of Abacco, who is faced with creditors breathing down his back. Marrying Olga, Grand Duchess of Russia, would solve his financial problems, however several other revolutionaries and unscrupulous businessmen step in the way to cause additional roadblocks for the Duke.

Max Linder was the professional name used by Gabriel Leuvielle, a French actor/director/writer of silent film comedies. Jean Hersholt was Danish, and in addition to his filmmaking exploits, his immense legacy of charity work led to Hollywood's annual Jean Hersholt Award given every year at the Oscars. Conrad Nagel was an American actor born in Keokuk, Iowa, and was also one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

His "Le Grand Meaulnes" is a coming of age story of two teenage boys, Francois Seurel and Augustin Meaulnes. French director Jean-Daniel Verhaeghe adapted the novel with Jean Cosmos into a film released in 2006. Jean-Baptiste Maunier played Francois and Nicolas Duvauchelle played Augustin.

"Le Grand Voyage" was a 2004 original film written and directed by Ismaël Ferroukhi, but it was never adapted from a novel. The film depicted a father and son who go on a sort of road trip in their car, that also functions as a religious pilgrimage. "The Grand Pecking Order" is a rock album by the American band Oysterhead. The Grand Tour Game is a racing video game.

A whole history and society has been created for this new world, with maps detailing the geography.

Monet undertook painting a series of paintings of the the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. In 2015, "Le Grand Canal" was purchased at auction at Sotheby Galleries for $35 million.
Paul Gaughin, Paul Cézanne and Édouard Manet were all three deceased by 1908.

Answer: the Covid-19 pandemic

As the hotel states on its website, "Due to the unprecedented implications the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the hospitality industry" the hotel closed down temporarily to the public. They will be doing extensive renovations but don't expect to open back up until late in 2021. There is by the way, an intent to open a "super tall" LA Grand Hotel, but it wouldn't be replacing the "Downtown" hotel. That new hotel is aimed to be composed of 242 condos and 559 hotel rooms. The top floor they say will be 1,008 feet up.
