Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Do you remember "Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!"? That was the Lone Ranger on his horse Silver. Which two words describe Silver?

Answer: White stallion

Silver was a white stallion of unspecified breed, owned and ridden by the fictional character Lone Ranger. The Lone Ranger was a masked ex-Texas Ranger who fought injustice in the American Old West. He first appeared in 1933 on a Detroit radio show. The radio show proved to be a hit and spawned a series of books, comic books, a popular television show and movies. On TV, Clayton Moore played the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels played Tonto.
2. Tonto was the Lone Ranger's faithful sidekick. What was the name of Tonto's horse?

Answer: Scout

Scout was Tonto's paint horse. Prior to 1938, Tonto had ridden a horse named White Feller, but on a radio show in 1938 an Indian chief gave Tonto a paint horse in exchange for White Feller. Tonto rode the paint horse and several episodes later named the paint horse Scout. Several people voiced Tonto on the radio program, but Jay Silverheels played Tonto on TV and the silver screen.
3. Festus Haggen was the only official deputy on the highly rated television show "Gunsmoke". Festus did not have a horse but he did have a mule. What was the name of his mule?

Answer: Ruth

Festus Hagen (played by Ken Curtis) always called his mules "Ruth" no matter if male or female. Festus had always been involved with mules but they were almost always male mules. (Male mules are jacks, female mules are jennies.) He always called his mules "Ruth", and it didn't matter if they were jacks or jennies.
4. Most people know that Roy Rogers' horse was named Trigger. What was the name of his wife Dale Evans' horse?

Answer: Buttermilk

Buttermilk was a buckskin quarter horse that was rescued by a cattle farmer while on the way to a slaughter house. He eventually ended up in Hollywood where Dale Evans bought him and gave him the name of Buttermilk. Buttermilk was a very fast horse, which really annoyed Roy.

Some scenes were re-shot so Roy and his horse Silver would be fastest off the mark! Buttermilk lived from 1941-1972.
5. What was the name of Confederate general Robert E. Lee's famous horse?

Answer: Traveller

Traveller was a large grey American Saddlebred from outstanding bloodlines, bred in what is now West Virginia. He weighed about 1,100 pounds and stood about 64 inches. Lee bought this horse in 1862 and named him Traveller. Traveller was Lee's mount throughout the Civil War, and after the war accompanied Lee to Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Virginia. Lee died in 1870, and Traveller died shortly thereafter in 1871. Traveller's remains were buried next to the Lee Chapel on the Washington and Lee campus just a few feet away from the Lee family crypt where Lee is buried. Traveller lived from 1857 to 1871.
6. Which 2004 film was based on the legend of American distance rider Frank Hopkins and his mustang? This film recounted Hopkins racing his horse in Arabia in 1891 against Bedouins riding pure-blooded Arabian horses.

Answer: Hidalgo

Hidalgo was a pinto mustang owned by American Frank Hopkins, and both performed in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. In 1891, a wealthy Arabian sheik challenged Hopkins to stop using the phrase "the world's greatest distance horse and rider" or participate in the annual 3,000 mile "Ocean of Fire" race across the Najd desert. Hopkins accepted and the race was on!

In the movie "Hidalgo", Frank Hopkins was played by Viggo Mortensen and the wealthy sheik was played by Omar Sharif. I highly recommend this movie.
7. Hopalong Cassidy's horse was called what?

Answer: Topper

Topper was a silver-white Tennessee Walking horse stallion. William Boyd played Hopalong Cassidy in 66 films. His wife Grace (in real life) named the stallion Topper in 1937 after reading a series of books by Thorne Smith called "Topper".

Hopalong Cassidy was a fictional character created in 1904 by Clarence E. Mulford. Mulford wrote a series of popular short stories and 28 novels based on his Hopalong character.
8. What was the name of the horse in Big and Rich's 2004 country and western hit "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)"?

Answer: Leroy

Leroy was the name! Big and Rich's song "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" placed 11th on the U.S. Top U.S. Country and Western Chart in 2004. This was the second single released from their "Horse of a Different Color" album. The following are the chorus lyrics from their hit song:

"Cause I saddle up my horse
And I ride into the city.
I make a lot of noise
Cause the girls
They are so pretty.
Riding up and down Broadway
On my old stud Leroy,
And the girls say
Save a horse, ride a cowboy.
Everybody says
Save a horse, Ride a cowboy"
9. In a 2005 family movie, the young female character Channing Walsh raised a baby zebra that was left behind by a traveling circus. The zebra, which could talk to other farmyard animals, believed he was destined to win the Kentucky Open. What was the name of this family-friendly movie?

Answer: Racing Stripes

"Racing Stripes" was a very cute family movie filmed in South Africa. Channing Walsh (played by Hayden Panettiere) and her father Nolan Walsh (played by Bruce Greenwood) raised a young zebra that Channing named Stripes. Stripes could talk to other animals in the farmyard and believed he was destined to win the Kentucky Open horse race.

This was a fun movie and your kids will love it. Two thumbs up!
10. General George Patton loved horses and had been involved with horses almost all his life. At the end of World War II in 1945 he saved the Lipizzaners. What was the name of the operation that saved the Lipizzaners?

Answer: Operation Cowboy

General Patton named the rescue mission "Operation Cowboy" which he set in motion ten days before Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945. In March 1945, the Lipizzaners had been removed from Vienna because the Director of the Riding School was worried that the stallions would be killed or eaten by the Russians. Due to General Patton's efforts and involvement, 1,000 Lipizzaners became wards of the U.S. Army on May 6, 1945--one day before Germany surrendered.

The horses remained wards of the United States until they were returned to Austria after the war.
