Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Biblical bigwig slew the Philistines with the jawbone of an ass?

Answer: Samson

According to the book of Judges, he slew 1000 Philistines with his rudimentary weapon. Perhaps he should have killed more because it was the Philistines who convinced Delilah to deduce the secret of Samson's super-human strength.
2. A 1971 British horror film asks the question, "Who Slew Aunty Roo?". I can tell you that Aunty Roo was killed by two young orphans; can you tell me which Academy Award winning actress played the part of psychotically deranged Aunty Roo?

Answer: Shelley Winters

The movie is based on the old fairy tale, "Hansel and Gretel". Fiendish Auntie Roo is trapped in her kitchen by two orphans who proceed to set fire to her house.
3. Shakespeare's fair Juliet could not live without her Romeo so she committed suicide. How?

Answer: She stabbed herself with Romeo's dagger.

I'm sure you're familiar with the story of the original star-crossed lovers. Boy thinks girl is dead; boy kills self; girl wakes from her drug-induced deep sleep and finds boy dead; girl kills self. Her final words before plunging the weapon into her breast were: "there rust, and let me die". This heart-breaker has become Shakespeare's most well-known and best-loved tragedies.
4. Shortly after midnight in 1968, Robert F. Kennedy was shot to death by a young Palestinian; can you name him?

Answer: Sirhan Sirhan

Sirhan claims he was drunk when he killed Kennedy and these "mitigating circumstances" should be taken into consideration. The Parole Board doesn't agree. Sirhan is now 66 and still serving his life sentence in California.
5. Which 2000 movie are you watching if the character of Maddy, as portrayed by the lovely Kate Winslet, is drowned by an inmate of an insane asylum?

Answer: Quills

Kate's character, a laundress, befriends the infamous Marquis de Sade in this film, smuggling his pornographic work to the outside world. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards.
6. Which 16th century monarch gained notoriety for beheading his queens when they fell out of favor?

Answer: Henry VIII

Actually, only two of Henry's six queens, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, lost their heads and, oddly enough, they were first cousins. Anne was found guilty of trumped up charges of witchcraft, adultery and incest, but her real crime was not producing a son. Catherine willfully and publicly committed adultery and was therefore charged with treason.
7. In 1978 the leader of the "People's Temple" in Guyana ordered more than 900 members of his "family" to commit suicide by drinking a cyanide-laced grape drink; can you name him?

Answer: Jim Jones

Jones' wife and several of his children died that day; three of his sons were away from the compound at the time and escaped death. The fearless leader chose to end his life, not with poison, but with a self-inflicted gunshot.
8. The ancient Greeks had a charming method of torture and execution which involved lighting a fire under an animal cast in bronze, placing offenders inside and roasting them alive. What kind of bronze animal was used?

Answer: Bull

Perillos, the inventor of this hideous device, thought he would be lauded and applauded by Phalaris, the tyrant of Agrigentum for his cruelly effective invention. Instead, he was given a taste of his own medicine when the Phalaris ordered him placed inside as a test dummy. To add insult to injury, he was removed while still alive and thrown from the top of a hill.
9. Bruno Richard Hauptmann was charged with the kidnapping and murder of the 20 month old son of which famous aviator?

Answer: Charles Lindbergh

The body of little Charles Jr. was found in a wooded area near his home just two months after his kidnapping. As a result of this tragedy, the "Lindbergh Law" was passed, making it a federal crime to transport a kidnapping victim across state lines.
10. "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" first appeared in an 1841 magazine as a short story. Who wrote it?

Answer: Edgar Allan Poe

"Graham's Magazine" paid Poe $56 dollars for the story; a princely sum at the time. It was first adapted into a full-length film in 1932, with the most recent adaptation occurring in 1986.
