Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Worked example: Another word for Cambodia 1977. Full answer "Pol Pot's territory", remove the P, O, T, T, E, R and you are left with the answer: "pol 's ritory". Don't worry, the rest is much easier, check the hints. When you make something from clay and bake it in a kiln it's called this. It's also the name of the workshop where you make it.

Answer: y

POTTERy is what you made. Good to know Mr. Harry's ancestors knew how to make stuff without a wand.
2. A computer tells this electronic device what to draw. It is a bit like a printer, except it's using a pen.

Answer: l

A PlOTTER could also be someone with an evil scheme.
3. This 19th century French working class hero is mostly remembered for writing the lyrics to the proletarian anthem "Internationale". His first name is Eugene, what is his last name?

Answer: i

Born in 1814, Eugene POTTiER's life was quite unmemorable except for the revolutionary days in 1871 when Paris declared itself a commune and he was elected a member. After only 2 months the commune was crushed and he had to flee, writing his famous poem on the run. He died in 1887, music was added to the verses by Pierre Degeyter in 1888. Here it is:

Arise, you prisoners of starvation. Arise, you wretched of the earth
For justice thunders condemnation, for a better world's in birth.
No more tradition's change shall bind us. Arise you slaves, no more in thrall.
The earth shall rise on new foundation: we have been naught, we shall be all.
'Tis the final conflict, let each stand in his place.
The International Soviet shall be the human race.

We want no condescending saviors to rule us from a judgment hall
We workers ask not for their favors, let us consult for all.
To make the thief disgorge his booty, to free the spirit from your cell
We must ourselves decide our duty, we must decide and do it well.

I bet you forgot all about wizards now.
4. This cyclist's claim to fame is that he was first on top of a mountain in the Tour de France. First name Rene, last name?

Answer: i

The year was 1905 and the mountain was the Ballon d'Alsace. Rene POTTiER aka "the butcher" (in the early days of cycling many racers were known by their non-cycling profession) immortalized himself as the first mountain king in cycling. Sadly he died one year later by hanging himself, according to rumour because of an unfaithful wife.
5. This is the name given to areas which belong to the USA, in the sense that the constitution applies, but are not part of any state. They don't exist anymore in the organised form since 1959.

Answer: incorraed ritories

incorPOraTed TERritories. Organised incorporated territories ceased to exist when Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959, leaving Palmyra Atoll as the last remaining unorganised incorporated territory (a place for wizard scuba diving perhaps).
Until 1898 there were no unincorporated territories (since it's basically an euphemism for colonies), but the USA has several of them today, organised (like Puerto Rico or Guam) and unorganised (like Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll etc.).
6. How do you call someone who likes to observe a particular mode of transportation (also seen on platform 9 3/4)? It's also the name of a 1996 film.

Answer: Trains

English: trainsPOTTER, American: railbuff, Australian: gunzel. Those enjoying ferroequinology i.e. the study of the iron horse can be seen near railroad tracks wearing anoraks. Before you say that the film's name was 'Trainspotting', not 'Trainspotter' I'll have you know that the international movie database (IMDb) says there IS a film with this name.

It even won the 'Best New British Animation' award at the Edinburgh Film Festival and was nominated for the BAFTA (Best Animated Short Film) too.
7. What is the last town in New York state on the I-95 before entering Connecticut?

Answer: r Ches

POrT chesTER, first settled in 1660, afterwards known as "Rye" and "Saw Pit", fought over in the revolutionary war, present name adopted in 1837 as it is the eastern port of Westchester county. Most interesting trivia fact: the official website informs us that Port Chester has an excellent restaurant row!
8. This Hertfordshire, England, town's name hit the headlines May 10, 2002, when a commuter train derailed, killing five. It might also be the place where Harry gets his drinks (when he is old enough).

Answer: 's Bar

POTTER's Bar has the misfortune of being known mostly in combination with a disaster. It shares this fate with towns like Lockerbie (plane crash), Bhopal (chemical spill), Aberfan (landslide), Chernobyl (meltdown) etc.
9. This cute member of the weasel family (Aonyx Capensis) lives on land and in waters south of the Sahara. It is well adapted to water: it has a thick waterproof coat, can close its nose and fold its ears.

Answer: Cae Clawless

The CaPe Clawless OTTER is more or less like all otters except for two features: it has almost no webbing (unusual for water creatures) and has no claws except on three toes on the hind legs (hence the name). This way it can use it's hands freely, almost like monkeys do. Check thebigzoo.com, otter.org, otternet.com and others for more info and furry pictures.
10. Which of these of Harry's "family members" was NOT a painter/illustrator by profession?

Answer: Sherman

Beatrix POTTER wrote and illustrated the "Peter Rabbit" stories.
Fuller POTTER was an American abstract painter.
Paulus POTTER was a 17th century Dutch painter who did mostly cows.
Colonel Sherman T. Potter was a character on M*A*S*H.

Jim_in_Oz pointed out that Sherman Potter did some nice painting though, mostly portraits and of course his horse. He was still a colonel by profession and not a real person anyway. If anyone can confirm Sherman's painting qualities please contact me.

So you see: cheer up, not all Potters are Harry. Congratulations to all who made it to the last question without despairing, it is a really difficult quiz. I hope you enjoyed it, feel free to comment.
