Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which layer of the earth is the thinnest?

Answer: Crust

The crust is the layer of the earth that we see, and is only, at best, a few miles thick.
2. What common edible could be truthfully but disgustingly described as "bacterially-transformed solid material derived from lactic fluid"?

Answer: Cheese

"Lactic fluid" is, of course, milk. It's bacterial action that gives most cheeses their distinct flavors.
3. The most abundant fish along the eastern coast of the United States is a species of...

Answer: Anchovy

The bay anchovy is the common species. You can tell an anchovy from a sardine by looking for a silver stripe along the sides- only anchovies have this.

Unlike some other anchovy species, no fishery exists for bay anchovies.
4. What word completes this proverb? "What's _____ for the goose is _____ for the gander."

Answer: Sauce

This proverb means "what is good enough for me is also good enough for you." It often has a connotation of "what applies to men should also apply to women as well." Although the saying is often misused as "what's good for the goose is good for the gander," "sauce" is the original and correct term.
5. Which of the following countries has the largest remaining population of wild wolves?

Answer: Italy

Surprisingly, there is a fairly large and steadily growing population of wolves in Italy. Much of their native prey is gone; they feed primarily on livestock, carrion and garbage. As of 1999, there were estimated to be about 450 wolves, up from 250 in 1987. They are fully protected.
Wolves are nearly extinct in Norway and Sweden, with less than 100 individuals shared between the two countries. Despite their perilous status, Norway still allows wolf hunting.
Finland has less than 200 wolves, and still allows them to be hunted.
6. What tropical fruit is a member of the bromeliad family?

Answer: Pineapple

Bromeliads are tropical plants in which the leaves form a cup that catches water. There are some frogs and other small animals that spend their entire lives in bromeliads.
7. Which of the following foods is a member of the often-deadly nightshade family?

Answer: Tomato

Eggplants and potatoes are also members of the family, which also includes deadly nightshade.
8. Complete the following saying- "People who like laws and _______ shouldn't watch them being made."

Answer: sausage

I heard this saying for the first time in college- a good friend of mine had been working on a campaign to pass a law that would mandate recycling of bottles and cans in California. It was voted down, and he came into the college lounge and disconsolately wrote this saying on the board.
9. Who wrote "Novum Organum," one of the first explanations of the use of the scientific method?

Answer: Bacon

"Novum Organum" dealt with how to test scientific proofs not by argument from authority, but by actual scientific experimentation.
10. What theme do all of the answers have in common?

Answer: pizza

Pizza was created in Italy (Q. 5.)
It has a crust (Q. 1) and sauce (Q. 4), and is covered with cheese (Q. 2.)
Pizza toppings include anchovies (Q. 3), pineapple(Q. 6), tomato (Q. 7), sausage (Q. 8), and Canadian bacon (Q. 9)
