Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Peter Pan", who was the bo'sun of the Jolly Roger and sidekick to Captain Hook?

Answer: Mister Smee

Smee was a pleasant fellow (for a pirate) and was much loved by the children kidnapped by Captain Hook. He does not beat them and mends their socks. At one point, he asks Wendy to become his mother.
2. In the NBC TV science-fiction series (1989-1993) "Quantum Leap," who is the hologram who assists time-traveler Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) in his adventures?

Answer: USN Admiral Al Calavicci

Created by Donald Bellisario, "Quantum Leap" followed Dr. Sam Beckett as he leapt from time to time and corrected errors in the past. Dean Stockwell, cigar and a cocktail in hand, would appear to him as a hologram to "help" with each challenge. They are both occasionally assisted by a self-aware computer named Ziggy.
3. In "Springtime in the Rockies" (1942), song-and-dance man Dan Christy hires a bartender as his valet and follows his lost love, Vicki Lane (Betty Grable) to Lake Louise. Who is his polymath sidekick?

Answer: McTavish (Edward Everett Horton)

"Springtime in the Rockies" [not to be confused with "Springtime in the Rockies" (1937) starring Gene Autry] is a classic Hollywood farce where, despite terrible obstacles, true love triumphs in the end. McTavish is the beneficiary of a trust which pays him a handsome living so long as he stays in school, so he pursues one college degree after another.

Not only does Dan get his girl in the end, but McTavish gets one (Phoebe), too.
4. In the Rossini opera "The Barber of Seville," who is the sidekick and helper to Count Almaviva (Lindoro) in his efforts to win the heart of Rosina?

Answer: Figaro

Gioachino Rossini's opera "The Barber of Seville" (1816) is based on a play (also "The Barber of Seville") written by Pierre Beaumarchais in 1775. Figaro is the central character. One reckoning in 2011 held that this opera is the ninth most performed opera in all the world.
5. Dora the Explorer is accompanied on her many adventures by her purple talking backpack and her monkey companion. What is this sidekick's name?

Answer: Boots

Since 2000, Dora the Explorer has been broadcast on CBS, NBC and Nickeleodeon (including Nick Jr.). Dora, an inquisitive Mexican girl, travels with her monkey Boots, both to discover the world and to solve problems. The franchise has grown to include dolls, books and video games. An evil character named Swiper steals constantly but Dora can stop him by saying "Swiper, no swiping" three times quickly.
6. Who was Buffalo Bob Smith's marionette companion on their early (1947-1960) NBC television children's programme?

Answer: Howdy Doody

Bob Smith created Howdy Doody as a voice character on his radio show on WNBC. Howdy became a string puppet when the show moved to television produced at Rockefeller Center. Buffalo Bob and Howdy entertained along with Phineas T. Bluster, Chief Thunderthud, Princess SummerFallWinterSpring, Dilly Dally, Flub-a-Dub, and Clarabell the Clown (originally played by Bob Keeshan who later became Captain Kangaroo).
7. Mister Darcy may be the object of Elizabeth Bennett's romantic intentions but who is her "bestie" and sidekick in "Pride and Prejudice"?

Answer: Charlotte Lucas

In Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" Charlotte Lucas is Elizabeth Bennett's best friend, despite their being sought by the same suitor. They are six years different in age and hold remarkably different ideas on love and marriage yet their love for each other is constant.
8. Artemis Fowl II is served and protected by his faithful manservant and bodyguard in the sci fi adventures written by Eoin Colfer. Who is this master of many weapons and schools of combat?

Answer: Butler

Butler, also known as Battle Butler, also known as Domovoi Butler, is Artemis Fowl's servant. His family is engaged to protect the Fowls; his father (the Major) protected Artemis Fowl I. Butler is Eurasian, balding, and has dark blue eyes. His body is "scarred from a thousand battles."
9. When Commander-in-Chief of the United Planets Space Patrol Buzz Corry kept outer space safe and secure for peaceful commerce, which young sidekick was by his side?

Answer: Cadet Happy

The "Space Patrol" was set in the 30th Century and entertained radio listeners, television viewers and comic-book readers of the 1950s. Armed with ray guns and space-o-phones, Buzz and his companions foiled the evil schemes of space villains (most of whom had Russian or German accents). Young Cadet Happy was usually by his side.

The franchise offered prizes, premiums and products to further the brand, including a device which allowed the user to encode and decode space cyphers.
10. Which manservant, unable to speak, assists Don Diego de le Vega in his secret role as Zorro in Mexican California (1821-1846)?

Answer: Bernardo

Zorro is a dashing defender of poor and indigenous persons. His clever manservant Bernardo pretends to be deaf but is capable to hearing (and spying on Zorro's opponents). The original series was created as a pulp-magazine serial by Johnston McCulley in 1919. Zorro has also appeared in novels, radio, television (especially the Walt Disney series (1957-1959), comics, on stage and in video games. Bernardo was portrayed on the Disney programmes by Gene Sheldon, a pantomimist, who added much to the role of Zorro's confidante and co-conspirator.
