Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the second largest state in the United States (by area)?

Answer: Texas

Alaska is the largest state, with 591,004 square miles. Texas is second largest with 266,807 square miles.
2. What US state had the largest population by the end of the twentieth century?

Answer: California

California had about 36,961,664 people in 2009.
3. When ignited, how long will a pile of camel dung stay burning?

Answer: 3 days

Yes, it's true. Camel dung will stay lit for three full days!
4. How big was the largest hairball ever coughed up by a cat?

Answer: 7 lbs.

That is one big hairball....seven pounds!
5. Where was spaghetti originally made, according to popular history?

Answer: China

Although many people believe that spaghetti, especially of the sort familiar to us in the 21st century, originated with either the Arabs, Etruscans or Romans, the real answer is that no one knows for sure.
6. What band has had songs such as "The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas", "Puttin' on the Ritz" and "Boss of Me" (the theme to Malcolm in the Middle)?

Answer: They Might be Giants

TMBG formed in the early 1980s and are still around today. Their two lead singers are both named John...interesting!
7. Which of the following is a balanced chemical equation? (Subscripts are in parentheses - ie: H(2)O = water)

Answer: 2H(2) + O(2) ---> 2H(2)O

A balanced chemical equation has the same number of the same type of element on each side of the yields sign. 2H(2) + O(2) ---> 2H(2)O because you multiply the coefficient (the 3 in 3H(2)O) by the subscript (such as the 2 in 3H(2)O) and that gives you the number of atoms of that element in that molecule. So on each side of the correct answer, there are 4 hydrogen and 2 oxygen.
8. Which of the following is correct for the following problem? (powers are marked by "^" ex. 2^2=4). [(y^2 x^6)^2]^3

Answer: y^12 x^36

When you raise a power to a power, you multiply the powers together.
ie: (a{2}){2}= a{2 X 2} or a{4}.
9. In the movie "Dances with Wolves" the main character is accompanied by whom on the way to Fort Sedgewick?

Answer: Timmons

Timmons is a very funny character. He makes strange comments, and farts. However, he (sadly) died from the tips of quite a few arrows...
10. In "Twelve Angry Men" how many jurors vote "Not Guilty" on the first vote?

Answer: One

The only juror to say "Not Guilty" is Juror 8. Juror 8 explains his reasons and as the story progresses, more and more jurors change their vote. Soon, the jurors think they might be a hung jury. They vote on that and decide they are not. Eventually, all the jurors say, "Not Guilty" except for Juror 3, who strongly thinks the defendant is guilty.

The final verdict was Not Guilty. It's a good story ... you should read it.
