Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the last word in the song "We Are the Champions" as performed by Queen in 1977?

Answer: Champions

To me, the song ends a little abruptly! I always expect him to finish the phrase with "of the world", but it ends at the word "champions". The song was originally recorded for Queen's album "News of the World".
2. What were the last words of the famous Athenian philosopher Socrates?

Answer: "Crito, we owe a cock to Asclepius. Do pay it. Don't forget."

Epicurus said "Live today...", but not on his deathbed. "Veni, vidi, vici" were the famous words of Julius Caesar in 47 B.C. It means, "I came. I saw. I conquered."

"I drank what?" is a common joke referring to the fact that Socrates died from drinking hemlock. He was ordered to commit suicide after he was found guilty of corrupting minors.
3. What were Hamlet's last words in the Shakespeare play of the same name?

Answer: "The rest is silence."

Of course, Hamlet was much more verbose. His whole speech is:

"Oh, I die, Horatio;
The potent poison quite o'er-crows my spirit:
I cannot live to hear the news from England;
But I do prophesy the election lights
On Fortinbras: he has my dying voice;
So tell him, with the occurrents, more and less,
Which have solicited. The rest is silence."

The other three lines are the last words of other Shakespearean characters. "Sheath" is Juliet ("Romeo and Juliet"). "Damn'd" is Macbeth ("Macbeth"), and "horse" is Richard III ("Richard III").
4. What words did Bob Barker use to end every episode of "The Price is Right" from May of 1985 to his retirement in June of 2007?

Answer: "Help control the pet population. Have your pet spayed or neutered."

Mr. Barker became a vegetarian in 1979. He also featured a pet from a local shelter once a week on his show. He told people to visit their local shelters if they weren't close enough to adopt the featured animal. He made "The Price is Right" refuse to award furs, safaris, or anything leather on the show. If a trip to Spain was a prize, watching bullfighting was not on the agenda. Bob Barker also inspired other hosts, such as his replacement Drew Carey and talk show host Phil McGraw to use those famous last words.
5. Whose famous last words were, "I'm tired. I'm going back to bed."?

Answer: George Reeves

George Reeves played Superman on the 1950's television series. He had been in such movies as "Gone With the Wind" and "From Here to Eternity". After the "Superman" series ended, he couldn't find work because he found himself being type-cast. He said these last words to his fiancee and friends one night, and then went to his bedroom and shot himself.

The other actors were all cast members of the 1979 "Superman" movie.
6. What is the last word in the Pledge of Allegiance (to the flag of the United States)?

Answer: all

"With liberty and justice for all." The pledge was written by Christian Socialist Francis Bellamy in 1892.
7. Who makes the board game called "Last Word"?

Answer: Buffalo Games

Last Word is a challenging game. It comes with a random timer, and you are given a category and a letter. People have to call out words that fit the category and begin with that letter until time runs out. Since the timer is random, you don't know whether to say your word *now* or wait a few seconds. It's a lot of fun!
8. Which of these actors did NOT appear in the 1995 film "The Last Word"?

Answer: Robert De Niro

"The Last Word" had an eclectic mix of stars. The tagline for the film was: "Lies pay. Sex sells. Money talks. How far would you go for..."
9. In 2007, what band had a hit in the United States with "Famous Last Words"?

Answer: My Chemical Romance

"Famous Last Words" was recorded as a companion song and video to MCR's megahit "Welcome to the Black Parade".

All three of the other choices are artists who at sometime in their careers released an album called "Famous Last Words".
10. What were the last words of former president John Adams?

Answer: "Thomas Jefferson--still survives."

Of course, John Adams was famously wrong. Thomas Jefferson had died earlier that day. Both men died on July 4, 1826. Louisa May Alcott's last words were of meningitis.
