1. Who starred in the film 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'?

Answer: Jack Nicholson

This marvellous movie is set in a mental hospital where a criminal who has pleaded mental illness to avoid prison is incarcerated with genuine patients. He soon begins to stir up the other inmates to rebel against the unbending Nurse Ratched, played by Louise Fletcher, who runs the ward. Actor Kirk Douglas, who played the lead role McMurphy in the original Broadway stage version, bought the film rights to the story.

He tried for ten years to find a studio to make it, but there were no takers. Eventually he gave the rights to his son Michael who succeeded in getting it made, but by this time Kirk was almost sixty and too old to play the part.
2. If your friend tells you that you have had one over the eight what does he mean?

Answer: You are drunk

The old British saying 'One over the eight' refers to the eight pints of beer which was considered a normal amount for an evening's drinking. If a person drinks more than that they are well and truly drunk, and will need a friend to take them home. In 1960 there was a stage revue called 'One Over the Eight' which featured Kenneth Williams and Peter Cook.

Answer: Madame Butterfly

'Madame Butterfly' is an opera by Giacomo Puccini with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is a tragic story of unrequited love. A young Japanese woman, Cio Cio San, falls in love with an American naval officer called Pinkerton. 'One Fine Day' expresses her dream that he will eventually come back to her, and how wonderful that day will be.

Answer: Grease

This song was specially written by John Farrar for the movie version of 'Grease' and was performed by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta. 'Grease' is the story of a boy and girl who have a holiday romance, but meet again unexpectedly when they go to the same high school. The song is one of the best selling singles of all time and sold 15 million copies worldwide.

The programme was presented by Phil Drabble from 1976 to 1993 and he received an OBE in 1993. He was a naturalist and wrote several books on natural history. Since then it has been hosted by several different presenters including Robin Page, Gus Dermody and most recently by Kate Humble and Matt Baker.

In 2003 it merged with the popular programme 'Country File'. It is a competition between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales to find the best handlers and most efficient dogs.

Answer: Randy Crawford

This song was written by Joe Sample and Will Jennings and recorded by Randy Crawford on her fourth album. She also released it as a single and it became her most successful single ever. It has been covered by many artists, most notably Nicole Kidman in her role as Satine in the 2001 movie 'Moulin Rouge'.
8. What is meant by a one horse town?

Answer: A small unimportant town

This expression first appeared in the mid 1800s and meant literally a town that needed only one horse. Its application widened and in 1871 Charles Dickens wrote in his magazine '"One horse" is an agricultural phrase, applied to anything small or insignificant'. Blackberry Smoke and Elton John have both written songs called 'One Horse Town'.

Neil Armstrong emerged from the spacecraft Lunar Eagle about six hours after landing and Buzz Aldrin joined him twenty minutes later. They spent about two and a half hours together on the moon's surface and collected forty-seven and a half pounds of lunar material to bring back for scientific investigation. Neil Armstrong was the commander and Buzz Aldrin was the pilot of the craft.
10. In Formula One motor racing what is the formula?

Answer: The rules concerning the cars

Formula One are the rules set down by Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile for one seater motor racing cars. The races are called grand prix and take place in many venues of the world. The overall winner for the season becomes the world champion. It is a sport where the whole team of designers and technicians are as important as the driver.
